The trouble with Sports Direct, historically speaking, is that they don't sell goods of the same quality as you can find in Decathlon. You can buy some crap in Decathlon but a lot of the stuff is good enough to practice the activity. Which is why they are so dominant here in France.

This is the big difference. Decathlon is surprisingly good quality for the money especially at the higher end the quality is brilliant. They're also very honest about the use cases for products. Sports direct takes the names of quality brands and destroys the quality and hardly decreases the price. Awful business!

In Belgium as well I'd assume most of Europe? What I find interesting about Decathlon is that way too many people still think that they are low quality. I think you often can't get better quality for the price, you can always get better quality at a higher price.

Peak Torque had good commentary about hookless. Safety needs to be a sliding scale, not you’re running 2psi more and now you’re facing possible death. Your clincher tire says max 120psi, but you can pump it up to like 160psi before anything happens. How many times did this happen with clinchers?

I think there was a chanel that tried pumping up tires on hookles way above the 73psi... hmmm, guess which chanel it was? ;) I believe that ISO put that limit of 73psi the same way as it is with clinchers and 120 psi. We just don't have much experience to be sure how it works now as riders, but I am kinda sure that manufacturers (especially in US) are not willing to put their customers at risk that much, that 75psi would kill them on a descent. BTW, I ride hookles myself with no issues. I ride them at about 60-65psi and comfort is superb, grip is superb, control is superb. Ofcourse it's hard to judge rolling resitance but they feel fast ;) Don't see a point of going higher (but i can imagine that heavier riders might need to). Also I hit a rock once on a descent at about 70kph and it was fine, although I puncutred the tire but it sealed fine. In the end, just a small scratch on the rim. In my opinion, the biggest problem is, that owners might not now that they run hookless and pump it up much above the threshold. I totally agree that it has to be solved somehow as nobody should be required to be a skilled mechanic to perform a basic pre-ride check and pump up his tires.

@@lason999 I'm willing to bet anything that if you rode the same exact course on the same tire, hooked vs hookless, it would be the exact same result. thus there is literally no positive point to have a hookless rim. only positive if you're the one making and selling them.

Quick comment: Phil Gaimon went back to the Big Island of Hawaii to re-take the KOM on the Mauna Kea climb. 56 miles from beach to top of the volcano gaining 14,000 feet (4300m). The final 14 miles is insanely steep and includes a long stretch of powdery gravel ash. Phil did it on a road bike with road tires. Crazy.

Vittoria air liners are indeed ridable with a flat, but they are not big and boofie. They would not cause the tire to fly off. Even the second incident at SB.. the guys rim was cracked in two

Yes - the foam inserts are closed-cell foam, so they compress when the tire is inflated - they only “puff up” when the tire is deflated, so they wouldn’t have pushed the tire off the rim unless the tire was already compromised

A long time ago, when I was still practising biketrials (rock/obstacle climbing with a bike without a saddle), we would often ride 5-8kms a day just to get from spot to spot. Every day. Great podcast folks thank you. Have been and checked my Reserve 35 wheels which I’ve been riding for 2 years. Website says they are ‘semi-hookless’. They say: Currently, the limiting factor for hookless rims is tire compatibility and a limit on tire pressure. Full hooked rims on the other hand are typically heavier and harder to install tubeless tires. Reserve road rims as a result are semi-hooked, which means there are reasonable limits on tire pressure, no tire incompatibility issues and tires are easy to install.

10 years ago when tubeless was new to road, and Francis will remember this, a few hundred of us riding the transcontinental went over the gravel roads around Alp Assietta Italy, all on road tyres and some of us on 23-25mm! Yeah there was punctures but a lot of us made it over fine.

@8:48 Zipp's rims might be compliant but their own tire/rim combo recommendations are not. They still say 28mm tires on a 25mm internal rim width rim are OK which is in direct violation of ISO/ETRTO guidelines. @16:08 however: these are fully within the helmet guidelines of the UCI. According those guidelines it actually has always been allowed to wear a TT helmet in a road race (see the comments on the new POC TT helmets being worn by EF in road races). @17:57 you can have a prototype provided it is commercially available within 12 months.

Funny thing is, I have once foolishly ridden a cheap road bike on an XC casual ride on the rural mountain footpaths with babyhead rock gardens. I had 25mm tires, gotten a million punctures, kept on riding despite the flat tires and marred my rim flanges, but not once have my tires popped off of my rim 😂😂 Also, Peak Torque has released a video on a breakdown about hookless rims.

The benefits for hookless are benefits for the manufacturer, more than the consumer. And i don't believe the cost savings are trickled down to consumers anyways. And if safety is the major downside, than just get rid of it.

I have been running Zipp 303s wheels for 3 years now. I am 6'6" and weigh 245lbs. I run 32c tires with a rear insert and run 60psi in front and 65psi on rear. I have total faith in hookless rims. I believe that most of the failures are caused by user error not manufacturer.

I think DNF has to be placed in context, which a friend did for me (we met via a running club): DNF is better than not starting Not starting is better than not training Not training is better than not signing up So yes, this is a bit of a whimsical race to the bottom :) but especially for Type A people (looking at you, fellow US peeps), I think it can be good to remember the broader context.

I got a custom frame during covid. It was the best frame I have ever had. I had another one built this year. (2 different disciplines). Like wise, best one I've had. With the cost of high end off the shelf bikes, building up a custom frame is still cheaper. Toe overlap was also an issue, which is not a problem on my custom frames.

the Giro Aerohead II helmet was designed following the UCI rules in conjunction with Visma Lease a Bike and appear to provide aero benefits. They also appear to allow the rider to look ahead down the road. Aside from the looks which I agree are over the top lets see what the UCI does now.

Tadej was probably running 30/32mm front/rear, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 psi. Wanna bet? Cx racers get around the track on 35mm or less, so 30/32mm seems like a good compromise.

Had one tire just blow off rim. Specialized Tan-wall Cotton on a Wabi Sub-15. Unloaded from car, topped air off to a pressure within spec that I have ran 100 times. Dropped off a curb, crossed the street and 50yrds into path BOOM. Remounted foolishly and rode on.

I raced the amateur Granfondo the next day at strade bianche, I can assure you that with my 30mm pirelli pzero race I was totally comfortable, the gravel roads sometimes felt smoother than the asphalt. And I'm Italian, and don't know where mousse in coming from, it's not an Italian word

I replaced the Giant wheels that came stock on my Liv Avail Advanced 1 with DT Swiss wheels because the Giant wheels are hookless and the DT Swiss are not. I probably would have gone with Zipp wheels if they were not hookless.

I'd say the folks who think made-to-measure is worthless have a) listened too much to industry BS b) never had one made. Would you buy shoes in t-shirt sizes...as in "too small, too big or close enough"? GIANT started it all back with the ONCE team bikes...nobody said much when S+ or M- frames were made for riders who hated the things with flagpole seatposts and 13 cm+ stems.

I have never had one made - but I’ve worked in shops where I’ve had more than one bike fit (serotta size cycle) and sell full custom fit bikes (not just using it as a tool to sell you a bike) Every fit I’ve had has shown the same - that I fit a stock 56cm frame - I know I’m lucky :)

You can clearly see the wheel being broken in the Strade hookless fault. If your rim brikes like that it is gonna cause a crash, no matter the tire system.

Road hookless are great if you are a light rider, if you are like me and the the very heavy end of the spectrum recommend tire pressure for my weight does not get low enough to even consider a hookless rim.

I've been saying "why is no one talking about the damn foam inserts here" for weeks.... The large insert HAS to be sizeable contributing to the tire rolling off the bead, it's like a big a$$ dull tire lever at race speed. You may as well have a darn baseball bat beating the tire off the wheel say "see, told you so... it failed". I'm not exactly a light rider, I have three sets of hookless Zipp wheels, ride both gravel and road on properly set up tire/wheel combinations with appropriate pressures and I have zero problems.

i have hookless for my gravel, mtb and one of my road bikes. had 0 issues i ride 30c tires at 50 psi vs my gravel setup at 38 psi so its not far off and quite low imo.

Stefan Kung rode the wc tempo 2023 with the worst helmet ever. The helmet was so bad that he chose to look down in stead of forward, and crashed really bad. The Visma Lease a bike helmet is different. I wonder if the design allows better forward view while keeping your head aerodynamically ok?

I absolutely hate the bike fit shite. It is ridiculous. Buy a bike online based on chart, swap the stem, enjoyed 15 years of riding. Could even swap it to an upright city bike with a tinsy bit shorter stem and new handle bars.

Emily fingered the culprit; it's the insert thingies. They take up a lot of volume in a skinny road bike tyre and they are not compressible, at least not like air. So hit something like a rock or a curb and the little bit of air in there has to compress a lot; the pressure shoots way above 73psi, and the tyre pops off. No insert and you have more air to spread the load. But the big issue for me is getting any kind of puncture or flat and there's NOTHING in a hookless rim to keep the tyre on. Adam Hansen is right; tyres should not come off. that's why hooked rims are better; hooked rims have got a grip on the tyre, inflated or flat.

Nick might be half right on the insert. Having ridden that tire on a hookless rim in a 100 mile road race, I was nervous but experienced no issue. HOWEVER, in moving that tire to a different set of wheels, I did notice that the sidewalls had gone really soft and bendy after only 250 miles on them. Combine the cotton sidewalls with that insert and irregular road surfaces (rocks) and you might have the recipe with a little too high pressure.

Its a bit disappointing you didn't zoom into the new picture regarding the hookless issue, because you simply can see how the rim is broken. If he hit something so hard that he broke the bloody rim, it really doesn't seem to me hookless is the problem here. Manufacturing of hookless: zipp has already a patent to put on hooks on hookless tires, which I assume they'd use as a backup in case of a ban. That hookless should be just slightly cheaper to manufacture sounds odd to me, because before zipp wasn't able to recycle the mold, which, as far as I am aware of, they can do now.

In regards to the Hookless issues: I wonder how much of the issue is due to accidental over inflation. For example, let's say the max PSI is 75 (I can't remember the exact max PSI number) and the mechanics inflate the tyres to 75 PSI before sending the rider out into a warm sunny race. Over the period of that race, surely the PSI will naturally increase due to the heat and other natural conditions. That surely would cause the tyre to be over inflated already.

CBD bad reaction? Try being an endurance athlete in late 40s with arthritis. Told by physio to try it but given blood pressure very low already (due to being fit I presume), I passed out while on a run which has never happened before so I've put it down to the CBD as did the doctors at A&E when I woke up. Don't use it unless you need it would be my opinion. Love the show btw (so much better than GCN)

Two more things: As far as weed in the US - Many people do use it, and they enjoy it. None of them become higher-functioning, more capable, or more successful. Long term it drags them down. I love how Emily's role has increased. Her ability to synthesize and compose a nuanced sentence on the fly while Francis and Jimmi struggle is a great benefit to the show. OK, one more. I do not love a shacket. Too flappy and flowy and getting in the way. I much prefer a pullover shirt or fleece.

I BOUGHT GP5000s 28mm for my back wheel yesterday.. and punctured at 9km. Then my oatches wouldn't stick.. and the core blewn out of my spare tube. crap 4000s before that - no puncture in 2 years! Are 5000s as crap as i now think?

Obviously, your own personal experience is what it is (it sounds to me like you've been unlucky 🤷)... But just to give You and everyone else a positive counter-example. My last pair of GP5000 28's (non-TR) had minimal punctures and lasted 8000 Km. Riding on Latex inner tubes on horrible S.England roads!

Did you expect the tire to be flatproof? What punctured it? Couldn't you have run over that last week with the other tires? Patches wouldn't stick. Why? The lady on this video says consumers should be able to change their own tires during the hookless explosion segment. Do consumers change the flat tires on their car? Joe and Jill Crankarm want bikes just like their hero races on....what does their hero do when he/she has a flat - the car just seconds behind hands them another BICYCLE! I wonder if the average pro could even change one of these tubeless, hookless, stuffed with a pool noodle, filled with sealant things him/herself? The daze of pros yanking a tubular off with their teeth and pumping a spare up themselves are gone. If you wanna be just like the modern pros you might need a follow-car these daze! Anyone who has ever worked in bike retail knows there are some bike riders/owners out there who should never be left near tools of any kind, for any reason.

I think CBD is probably overrated, but I think there's something to it. I definitely used a few few cbd drinks get over a sore back before. I also think it keeps my dog going stong at 13. I obviously don't know for sure if it helps, but I do know that he likes it. I like a CBD drink on occasion if I'm doing or did something active, but I'm definitely more into the THC ones. They are a great addition to any occasion or adventure. I do a lot of canoeing, and having one on the go is awesome! I think they are a great alternative to drinking alcohol. Just keep the dose low. People want to be heros, but not all of us are. There's absolutely nothing worse than way overdoing it on edible marijuana😂
