The reason this works is because of the presence of the two women. The men are both in their own way preening for them; trying to impress them. Coogan is attempting to do this with his pedantic historical monologues. Brydon completely takes the wind out of his sails by working the Moore pun into the ground, essentially killing any momentum Coogan could have gotten. Of course, the women are not particularly interested in a monologue about the Moors in the first place, so even if Brydon hadn't said anything, Coogan would not have succeeded in impressing the women. But the humor is rooted in the obvious frustration being induced in Coogan by the continual, unabated undermining that Brydon is effecting. A delightful scene.

Hands down, my favourite bit from the movie. "My name is not Roger Muslim, it's Roger Moore."

In my opinion, I prefer when they are on their own comparing impressions together. Having an audience at the table takes me out if the convo between them and I don't get the most out of it.

I think the joke is extended on purpose, to emphasize the contribution to Spain of the moors in a way the viewers will not forget.

It's to highlight the unspoken competition between Coogan and Brydon; Coogan realises his impression is the lesser of the two so he tries to impress the women with his knowledge of history, but Brydon just doesn't let him, he keeps returning to the same well and monopolises the attention until Coogan visibly shows his frustration with the Tourettes line. It's just brilliant all round, what a pair.

Can someone tell me the background of the joke about 'Move! Move!' and Roger Moore...they both seemed to know it...perhaps it was a line from a movie?

Can you imagine some else trying to drone on like Coogan is here about any subject he'd shut them down, disconnect or just get up and walk off. Brydon gazumped him beautifully here, the Girls were just being or are, I guess, paid to listen/ be polite and fain interest. Brydon was very funny here.

They are indeed paid to be there because they're actresses and this is a sitcom.

Impersonating Roger Moore is very hard. The Scott and that Irish guy are much easier.
