Monty is a mole. He got involved in the miners' strike in the '80s, stealing coal from the mine to give to friends and family to keep them warm (that was the first game "Wanted: Monty Mole"). So Monty got thrown in jail, but managed to escape (the second game: "Monty is Innocent"). Now he's on the run and trying to get out of the country before the law catches up with him (third game: "Monty on the Run"). Successfully fleeing the UK, the next game in the series - "Auf Wiedersehen, Monty" - saw Monty travelling Europe to obtain enough money to buy a Greek island to retire on. (There was also a Christmas game released and there's been a modern remake, but those weren't strictly part of the original franchise and story.)

@@potato_the_chip Yes, and there was controversy regarding the first game, as it made political commentary on the miner's strike and featured Arthur Scargill - the leader of the Miner's Union - at the start of the game, as he chases you for breaking the picket lines and entering the mine. I mean, as "political commentary" goes, it was hardly a piercing satire or anything. But the controversy was that, well, this was possibly the first game to feature a story that involved real-life politics. No-one was sure if games were even allowed to do that, back in the '80s. It was all new and scary at the time. Also, I would comment that the name of the second game - "Monty is innocent" - was blatantly not true, as he really did steal coal from the mines. If they wanted to argue that Monty was morally justified in his law-breaking, to keep friends and family warm through the Winter, then that's one thing. But the claim of "innocence" was simply just not true, by the game's own lore. This was all a big deal at the time. It all seems very quaint now, though, when you can beat up prostitutes in GTA and all that, to worry about a Mole stealing some coal.

I didn't hear this song from the soda can bird thing, but I can't remember for the life of me where I did hear this song. But it's amazing and its hitting me with some weird nostalgia for something I don't remember.

I'm also here searching for this. I've seen brief starts of playthroughs of I Wanna Be the Guy but have never had any interest playing it myself, so I think it's somewhere else

I heard this theme for the first time a long time ago in a video of an actual hamster running around in like a cardboard version on the game. Don't know if it helps you, but here's the video: youtube. com/watch?v=g069AFLtL40

There's a lot of super old video game tunes where you can clearly tell they were based, if not recorded and then bit-crushed, with real rock and roll instruments. But this song has the distinction of sounding like it was tailor-made for a Guitar Hero game that wouldn't exist for another 20 or so years.
