Former Marvel Bullpenner (1990-1998) here. At this point, all of Marvel's lettering was done via pasteup. We did not go to digital lettering until somewhere around 1995/1996, or maybe just a little before then.

9:35 That's a Mark Jeweler's ad! They usually showed up in areas near military bases, targeting newly enlisted soldiers with some extra money on their hands.

THATS A MARK JEWELERS VARIANT!!! THOSE ARE WORTH WAY MORE

I remember buying this when my dad was stationed in Germany in the late 80's. It was the strangest art I had ever seen! I was like "Where's Marc Silvestri?!"
@aaronsasson51484 жыл бұрын
That copy you were showing off is known as a "Mark Jewelers Variant" and typically tends to be worth more because of its rarity. I believe they only appeared in Northeast US distributed copies.

I was about to mention that, I grew up in the south and never had an issue with the Mark Jewlers insert. I hear that collectors on ebay pay a premium for these variants.

I believe they were intended to be sold near military bases.
@useableid61702 жыл бұрын
@@mikelesan3964 Yeah, I believe that's correct. The target audience for those ads I think were for soldiers who wanted to propose or buy a gift for their significant other back home.

A quarter of comic book Instagram is obsessed with Mark Jewelers inserts. I could be wrong, but I believe they were aimed at the military base crowd.

Claremont alludes to the Havok/Wolverine: Meltdown limited series when Wolverine tells Havok he “knows a place in Mexico” (on page 30). Meltdown is a crazy, violent series from the Epic imprint written by the Simonsons (Walt and Louise) and painted by two separate artists (Jon J. Muth did Havok and Kent Williams did Wolverine- I think even sharing the same page at times). My parents bought that issue for me from the racks of a drug store... those word balloons didn’t cover when Wolverine clawed a guy through the eyes... Great video as always!

This was one of the books reprinted in the UK for a summer special or something. I ended up with two so one got disassembled and plastered over my bedroom wall. Also, I think that faded colour is because it's meant to be viewed from inside the bar, through the window.
@garyduggan8973 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was onto ebay to see if I could get this original issue but then as they started through it I realised I've got this already - the UK reprint - such a bizarre one, remember been thrown / amused as a kid with the star wars and superman characters popping up!

Man don't see the mark jewelers ads very often. Maybe I'm thinking of less colorful ones but I get the collectibility of them more lol

This was from back when I had a subscription to X-men. I was so disappointed at this issue. At the time I was still blissfully unaware of Rob and what he was going to subject us to in the new mutants and x-force.
