When I was coming up in the 80s and early 90s the All Star game and weekend were a really big deal. All the biggest stars participated in the slam dunk contest. There was a year where MJ, Dominique, and Clyde all participated. They were three of the biggest names and they didn’t think they were too good to enter the competition.

The league inserted the 3 pointer; stopped hand checking; whistled defense out of the game which killed fair competition; allows no remedy for horrendous officiating; glorified one player over anothers; watches as owners become so greedy; maintained and furthered a plantation atmosphere; NBA is not concerned with player safety and health yet that affects their wealth; there's word the NBA is too Black shows racism. No one addresses racism; Does anyone complain about the NHL being too white? Nothing has been done about more non-white owners. Silver said at the All Star Game that expanding to more franchises must be done slowly ... why? The problem with the NBA starts at the top with the owners. The media and fans have put an emphasis on winning chips so no one is going to risk injury 2 months from the playoffs during an exhibition game. Look at the Pro Bowl in the NFL. Defense gets sacrificed because no one is paying to see hand checking.

How to fix the NBA: 1. Players now get game checks, divided by 82. You play, you get a game check. I bet you all of the load management crap and, “I can’t play because I have a hangnail” crap would go away real quick. 2. Actually call traveling 3. Get rid of the gather step 4. The NBA needs to stop scheduling marquee matchups when one team is coming off a back to back and the other team had rest. TNT had to stop showing the Celtics Bucks game at half because the Celtics had just went to OT the night before against the Twolves and the Bucks had 2 nights off. For baseball, the game is the individual at bat, the team fields. The other sports are structured-differently. Individual-achievement at the plate. Football:The passer doesn't catch his throws..on-purpose, the runner doesn't hand-off to himself. Bball: one-shooter, but not always individual-achievement. They get assists!, 5 on 5 -both-ways. Different strokes for different folks.

Stern ran the NBA like Vince McMahon jr ran the WWE (WWF). I give Stern props for properly promoting the Magic / Bird rivalry and platforming Michael Jordan. That said, Stern absolutely fixed games, playoff series, and drafts. It was under Stern that NBA referees were gambling on games they officiated.

Sterns gets a little too much credit for marketing individual players. That's in the DNA of basketball. Whether its street ball or professional, people largely go to see certain players. When Connie Hawkins didnt play, ticket sales declined. College is probably the only exception.

Nah, you might be too young to remember, but there was a time when even the biggest stars in the NBA were not marketed. How many commercials did Kareem or Dr. J do in the 1970s and early 1980s? Exactly. I had my issues with Stern, but he did have the foresight to put the league's biggest stars out there for fans to embrace. It also coincided with Nike marketing Michael Jordan with Spike Lee for their Air Jordan commercial and that catching fire. It was like lightning in a bottle for the NBA, and combining that with promoting the Lakers vs Celtics rivalry (Showtime vs Beantown), everything took off from there.
