Kobe was 100% the face of the NBA from '05 - '10, even with Colorado. He was literally the measuring stick for the up & comers (chiefly Wade & Lebron.) He drew the MJ comparisons. Leading All Star Vote receiver, leading jersey sales, Lakers sold out more away games than any team during this stretch, & he was by far the biggest international name, a fact that was hammered home everytine he went across seas in the Olympics & FIBA. I can't take Broussard seriously sometimes. Iverson was "A" face. Shaq was "A" face. Kobe was THE face for a significant stretch.

Guy played an NBA record Christmas day games in the prime time slots. If you want to say you think he wasn't squeaky clean anymore post '03 with the Lakers break up & Colorado, I'll agree, and so would he (his Black Mamba moniker was literally born out of him seeking a way to deal with the polarizing affect he had post Shaq & Colorado.) I think media outlets like espn are desperate for an american, particularly one who has the super athleticism that nba players have traditionally had to be the face of the nba/best player and have decided to go hard on Edwards as that person , he is a good player no doubt but he hasnt shown anything so far beyond a couple of highlight blocks, big scoring nights to justify the confidence. When i look at Wembanyama, im genuinely amazed, when i watch Doncic i see a player who can be the best on the floor offensively every night as both a playmaker and scorer, when i watch Jokic i see a baketball genius. Edwards is just a traditional hyper athletic scorer, there have been loads over the years, before his legal issues they were trying to push Ja Morant, another in that vein.
