As an amateur game, the players are very psyched and riled when it comes to the "business end" of Championships - there is a lot of rough and tumble to the beautiful game and when it crosses over to brutality it is more the exception to the rule. Very much the pride and joy of our nation, Hurling is the real Beautiful game!! Nice reaction Video

Rob, you seem to be amazed these players don't flinch when struck by the hurly, and that there are so many flare ups in that video. Think on it, everyone on the field, including the ref and the lineos are Irish. They have all played hurling since they were 5, getting struck by the stick or a huge shoulder charge is,all part of the game. And I'm sure that payer on player violence is 'worse' in the lower leagues, just as it is in soccer (not through malicious intent, but slightly lower skill level and higher degree of clumsiness)

The amazing thing though is that the scenes from this video are very much the exception to the rule. You generally don't see much in the terms of fights, at least at the senior level of the game. You probably see more in Gaelic Football, due to some very intense rivalries combined with a game that involves more hands on if than hurling.

I've played shinty against hurling players in a composite match and when the flat of the stick hits you, it's like getting an almighty slap (bloody sore but not usually to bad). With the edge of the stick however.... Well I've still got the scar below my knee. To be fair the guy bought me a pint afterwards. Also helmets: effective.

Rob, love your interest in the game. Most of what happened in the video is such a small part of matches and indeed rareish. When I used to play, and if it ‘kicked off’ the unwritten rule was to ‘drop the hurley (the ‘hurl’) and do your business without it. Think in terms of rugby how they will beat the crap out of each other and have a beer after! As I might have said before it’s a high intensity sport, loaded with skills developed (in childhood really) over years. As I also said before you’d love a live match. Come visit! Indeed depending on where you are in the UK, London have a team in both hurling and Gaelic football at senior levels. Thanks so much for sharing your ‘reaction(s)’! 😉☘️

I’d guess that the helmets protect against cuts - but like a rugby scrum cap won’t do much to protect against concussions from being whacked by a large piece of ash!!

I'm not sure i dont remember ever getting a concussion through my helmet the are well enough padded and the tacking doesnt whiplash you body as much as it would in rugby for example. the helmers are most useful for protecting against the ball hitting your head tbh also when you lose you cool and swing for someone without thinking and end up witha broken hand lol

There’s also the Scottish game of Shinty: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIPFd4elfdB1oZI and an annual compromise Shinty/Hurling international series held annually: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXrGhXp6apWipa8 Wales used to have its own mental game called Bando - which was never formalised in the same way as Shinty or Hurling, but generally seems to have been a cross between the two, but more similar to Shinty. Occasional ‘friendly’ games between villages take place to this day, with the rules agreed between the two captains before the game.

At 6:30 or so that big slap wasn't "the slap of 2 sticks". It was stick on flesh, I'm not sure if that was to upperleg/midriff or where no. 8 got hit, but the women could see, and hear, it from where they were.

There is a trick here. We all have hurls. We all got them while we were learning to walk. You use your hurl to defend yourself. Sliothar coming in at 100MPH and the bloke behind can legally attempt to slap it or hook your hurl before you catch it. Hurl in left hand behind your right hand tries a catch. I have many broken bones to confirm that this can be tricky.

It's a great game to play. it is played by males and females of all ages. My daughter played at a very high junior level for many years in goal and thrived on the sport. It is, in my humble opinion, the greatest field sport in the world. these hacked together clips do the game no justice at all. It is an amateur sport, requires skill, resilience, athleticism, brains and bravery. to appreciate the game you need to be in the stadium watching a whole game to understand the sheer pace and intensity of the sport.
