One subtlety to add to the skill level in this game. A hurler can only take possession of the sliotar (ball) twice, if they catch it 3 times that's a foul. So if they pick it up into their hand, or catch it in play, that's once. They may then "solo" it, which is balancing or bouncing the ball on the hurley, remember they can only take 4 steps with the ball in their hand. So if they take it into their hand after soloing, that's twice, now they have to get rid of it. However sometimes you will see players either continue with the ball on their hurley, flick it up off the hurley and strike it, or put the ball back on the hurley, solo and then bounce the sliotar off the ground, which resets the number of hand possessions. Bouncing the sliotar off the ground while running at full tilt with defenders all over you is very difficult!

Hey Rob, so there was a series on TV called the toughest trade. A hurler went to play baseball (there is a brilliant clip of the hurler doing bare handed catches and the baseball guys freaking out) and another to ice hockey and someone from them games came to hurler. A gaelic footballer went to play rugby and Shane Williams the Welsh rugby legend played gaelic football. Well worth a look. I also believe the Kilkenny hurlers went to train with some cricket team in England to help them with their fielding. Interestingly I've played soccer, gaelic football, hurling and rugby (now a referee) and hurling is tougher than rugby just about.

We all played Hurley as kids in Ireland. I don't know anyone who didn't. And yes, it's very painful at times. Nobody that has ever played it didn't get a smack of the hurly across the knuckles, the knees, the head. My mother took me off the school hurley team because I came home with a tennis ball sized lump on my head. I was only about 12 y.o.a. And that was the last straw for her. In those days we didn't wear any protection. Even then the senior players didn't have to wear protection. That was changed some years back. And just to add, many players developed their early skills of playing hurley as children and Teenagers.

06:10 This sideline hit is the hardest thing to do in Hurling. It's basically the equivalent of turning a putter into a 7-iron. Id love to see a video of you trying it. A decent Hurley and a sliotar (the ball) will cost you about 40-50 pound, also its great to just hit the ball for your dog to retrieve

Hi Rob love your reaction to our wonderful games but just to let you being new ish to our game that goal that you said don't mind that was one of the best examples of amazing hurling skills he hit the ball into to the net without swing his hurley left or right because he knew he could be hooked by the defenders behind him on his left or right and he has to make that decision I'm a split Second and of course he also has to get the ball past the goalkeeper this not a criticism of you Rob you are new to our ancient games Irish people would appreciate what the player in that part of the clip takes an extraordinary level of skill and courage I still considered you the very best at reacting to our games keep the good work up Sky sports are showing GAA championship games live starting Sat 16/4/21 live coverage right up to the football and hurling semi finals and finals and no restrictions on crowds 🙂🙂🙂

I don't have to imagine a ball coming straight at me. I played camogie, the women's game in my teens, which is exactly the same but played on a slightly smaller pitch. In those far off days no protective gear was worn and I was in the goal mouth. I saved the goal because the ball was hit very close in and I didn't have time to duck. It hit me right between the eyes. If it had been even a little lower I would have had a broken nose. I finished the game but had the most spectacular black, then green and yellow eyes for nearly two weeks. That ball is hard - very hard.

This is a 2000 year old sport. It is derived from the training skills required for fighting close quarters on the battle field. Since then it has developed into a sport. Nearly all other team stick sports are derived from Hurling. Lacrosse, Ice Hockey. Field hockey, Shinty. The one exception Baseball.

If you want to see professional players try there hand in both the sports, it's in aib's the toughest trade, Shaun Williams comes to play gaa, and a cricketer comes to play hurling both at the club level, the second one trades with a ice hockey player and NFL player, and as always it's the amateur lifestyle that shocks them the most

This was my favorite game to play and was on my local town and school teams. There were no helmets back in those days and getting hit with the sliotar (ball) could literally knock you out or, end your game, never mind getting hit with the hurley. It's a fantastic fast paced and very skillful game. Not the best game to be having a violent disagreement though.

Always appreciate your reactions to hurling and gaelic football. Actually there is a crossover game that allows Irish hurlers a limited opportunity for international playing experience. There is a similar stick game callled Shinty, played mainly in the Highlands and Islands of the west of Scotland which provides the opportunity for the development of a hybrid game that brings Hurling and Shinty together under compromised rules, while representing the best of Ireland and Scotland. These games are played annually at special tournaments in either country, with players picked from the best of both games to represent their country. Check it out.

Over the bar is called a point ... The name of the ball is a sliotar but to pronounce it properly, say "schlitter" like slitter but with and Sch like Schumacher at the start and litter all one word said fast. Irish people probably aren't as blown away or as impressed as you are with the solo runs because we grow up seeing them, trying them, but goalkeepers do impress me greatly! Long long ago, there were dual-stars players who represent their county in Hurling and Gaelic Football, but nowadays a coach will make a player pick one or the other which is kind of a pity. Former Spain international and Liverpool player Xabi Alonso played a bit of Gaelic Football in his teens when he was a language exchange student. Martin Keown, England and Arsenal played a lot of Gaelic Football in his youth, his parents are Irish. And way before your time Kevin Moran, Manchester United and Republic Of Ireland was a big Gaelic Football star before he switched to soccer. Ireland do play Scotland in a mix rules game of Hurling and Shinty but those games aren't covered or promoted that well.

Hi Rob when a hurler does that trick of flicking the ball over an defenders head and catching it on his stick I am sure its the same in England we say he sold him a pup 🐶 and when two hurling sticks hit each other we call that the clash of the Ash in America they call someone who think 🤔they know everything about the game a Monday morning quarter back in Ireland 🇮🇪 we call them hurlers on the Ditch not too sure if their is an equivalent for cricket and I totally agree their is no professional or amateur sport in the world that can compare to hurling the skill set is beyond a anything you can think of and as you rightly say these girls and guys are all total amateurs their was when I was a boy only one other sport that could attract crowds approaching GAA crowds rugby union lansdown Road 50000 Twickenham 60000 Cardiff Arms Park over 50000 Murray field much the same they were all amateur players when I was a boy not too sure if their is apart from American college football but they have catchment areas of a 100 million plus people so 100 thousands for them in no big deal one last little fact I read at least 40 years ago that Twickenham every year would get over 700 thousand applications for England home games I think I said it you before tickets for all Ireland finals are not sold to the public they are distributed to the 2000 GAA clubs the four teams in the finals get the most tickets all Ireland finals usually have two games senior and minor the minor Players are aged over 13 under 17 the minors play before the senior game so by the the time the senior starts you could have well over 70000 watching the young players and that's where a lot of the senior players got use to playing before tens of thousands of fans due to the pandemic they play the minor games separately boo I don't know if you heard of Kevin moran he played for Dublin in the 70s he also played soccer he was spotted playing soccer by an agent and got to try out for man United which led to them signing him on he played for a number of years the manager of man United at the time said when he first played on the first team that he didn't have to worry about Kevin's reaction to the huge crowds because he played gaelic football in front of bigger crowds at home 🙂🙂🙂 looking forward to the football final at 5pm hope you get a chance to see it take care Rob
