For those of you who are watching this in 2022 (or later), the traffic simulation settings don't exist in the newer versions of the network mod. They've made the settings internal and optimised them, though you lose the ability to really dive into the settings yourself. The average player is all set now.

I struggled using the sink or swim method which gave me some basic familiarity with the controls, then spent a few hours searching for articles explaining the underlying mechanics of the game. Your explanation on superblocks and simple grids is interesting. I found that the city I live in (Winnipeg if you're curious) has the simple grid in the older parts of the city while it uses superblocks in the newer, outer areas. It's definitely weird seeing how the city planning techniques change as you go around different parts of your city that were built in different eras and recognizing the differences.

what are you talking about, diagonal avenues are amazing, I always use a mix smal street grid/superblock system and use a diagonal avenue to cross it (not too centered) and place a bus stop at each end of it and it's always the most used ones, and it helps sims move from one end to the other way faster than taking all the inticrate network of roads

24:00 elevated & monorail has a key advantage in SimCity4 without the NAM mod is that the visibility when running through a commercial corridor helps build and increase the customer base and pedestrian foot traffic which increases transit fares and revenue for your city. I usually build on a 8x9 or 7x8 tile grid network and run the elevated trains right down the middle of the grid so that there is room for the bigger 4x4 and 3x3 commercial high rises. I find that I make more $$$ in a mix elevated/subway compared to a subway only system because they are hidden from view.
@RobsRedHotSpot
@RobsRedHotSpot 4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure that's not the case with the NAM as well? It's something I've heard before as well. In real life, I think elevated systems tend to have slightly lower land values around them because of noise (depending on how quiet the system is. Although the difference between elevated and subway is probably marginal.
@jdayala-wright8875
@jdayala-wright8875 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobsRedHotSpot The key question is how quiet the system is. If there a large skyscrapers or highrise apartments sandwiching the elevated train that will create a soundwall for the area. However anecdotally elevated in my cities with that configuration produce 25% more money. I do it replacing the same elevated with a subway in the CBD area and there is a drop in revenue from transit fares for some odd reason. BTW I don't have the NAM because when I did have it, it cause my computer to crash often

At 48:21 with the superblock there are many dead end streets. Not sure about Sim City4 but in 3000U the dead ends seem (visually) to cause a great amount of congestion. You can watch the vehicles traveling on a main road turn onto a dead end, go all the way to the end, then back out to the main road and continue in the same direction they were going originally as if they are lost or sightseeing. Since they often have to stop before re-entering the main road, the dead end often gets plugged up with a line of stopped traffic. Another downside to the superblock is if you want to drive from your house 2 tiles from the main road to get to a friend's house or a store which is 2 tiles on the other side of the main road, you mau have to worm your way around many side streets (maybe 20-50 tiles) to reach that spot which is only 5 tiles away; so it creates more traffic mileage and pollution.
@RobsRedHotSpot
@RobsRedHotSpot 3 жыл бұрын
The disadvantage of the superblock is mostly for pedestrians (in real life). You have to walk a long way along indirect routes to get from A to B, and often along boulevards that are designed for cars. From a driving perspective, intersections are what slows down traffic. The whole point of the superblock was to create fast, high capacity roads on the edge of the town with quiet residential streets in the middle. This works if everyone drives everywhere (and no one walks to the corner store lol). Most progressive urban planners today are not designing cities using the superblock model, and instead using more pedestrian-friendly designs.
@HarryParkin
@HarryParkin 3 жыл бұрын
I think the "superblock" design is a similar concept to what's used in the UK a lot. We have "Ring Roads" in many cities, the most famous being the M25 motorway (highway) that encircles London- they allow many people on different journeys to take the same high capacity route

Superblocks are being used in Barcelona combined with pedestrianisation. That way cars can only circulate through the exterior border of the superblock while people walk through the inside. Combined with public transport it works quite well.
@RobsRedHotSpot
@RobsRedHotSpot 2 жыл бұрын
Barcelona superblocks is a different and more recent use of the word than how I'm using it here. In North American urban planning, "superblocks" refers to large, high-capacity roads (mostly in suburban areas), that surround residential neighbourhoods, which typically use low capacity cul-de-sacs and crescents. Barcelona superblocks are a much more pedestrian-friendly approach to inner city areas.

1:29:00 are you sure about that? I built a ferry terminal on the western bank on the vanilla San Fransisco region, and another on the weastern bank. There's a huge mostly river plot in between the two. Yet when i "made a city" in the river plot, just plopped a ferry station as a mid-point and nothing more, no houses no work, the sims started moving from the eastern to western part of the region, across 3 plots.
@RobsRedHotSpot
@RobsRedHotSpot 4 жыл бұрын
I was pretty sure until you asked and then I checked. So with the NAM traffic simulator it seems sims will cross as many tiles as they need to get to work. It would seem that commute time and not distance is the limiting factor. The max trip time is set by default to 600 and increasing it in the NAM config tool has no effect. You can also tweak the commute time scaling value although the NAM modders claim that time scaling was implemented poorly in the engine. Any commute to another tile is considered "long" as well, so I imagine that Sims won't travel too much further than one large tile away (ferries are a fairly fast mode of transportation IIRC so they might go further with that mode). I'll make a note of this comment and mention the error in a future video. Thanks for the heads up, though!

@@RobsRedHotSpot You should do a video where you answer miscellaneous questions like mine about obscure game mechanics. Here's just a few more, unless you don't mind answering more ;) 1) Do sims hop between multiple transport types in order to go from point A to point B (say, for instance, a sim knew that a monorail station was really close and that station happened to bring them to another station which was within walking distance to their job which was in another city, but they could use a bus to get closer to the monorail)? If so, is there a limit to how many times they will do this? 2a) I have heard of such a thing as a *regional* population cap. I have known, and witnessed, development caps within individual cities (small high-rises will only appear when a specific population is reached, and skyscrapers will only appear once the population has grown to a specific, even larger size than that at which small high-rises appear). What is this regional population cap, if it exists? 2b) Is it just the same thing as the development stages that are shared across the region as determined by total regional population? 2c) Even if I start seeing skyscrapers in a city, is there a limiting factor that will stop more skyscrapers from appearing *even if I have enough demand to see more* unless I increase the regional population significantly more? Is this the same thing as the regional cap, or is there no such thing as a regional cap and there is some other factor within my city preventing skyscrapers from developing even though demand is sufficient for them? 3) In your video where you plan the regional development for Digby, you plan in such a way that the infinite commuter bug could appear (3 or more inter-connected, adjacent cities is all it takes to get the infinite commuter bug). Are you aware of this fact? If so, how do you counteract it? 4) Does each wealth class of sims--low(R$), medium (R$$) & high (R$$$) travel varying maximum distances to a destination before they require transport? In other words, will R$ walk a shorter distance or drive a shorter distance than R$$$ before they give up? 5) What are the best tax rates, and when would I know to set them? Are there various stages of the game where tax rates should be changed?

On the traffic simulator's volume settings I never use classic because it's unrealistically low (all the neighborhood streets which aren't culs-de-sac become roads or else nothing can move). As a rule of thumb for the other levels (low, medium, high, ultra): * Low: best representation of hourly volume capacities prior to the onset of congestion * Medium: best representation of a single commute period's volume capacity (what might go through in 2-3 hours on each rush hour) * High: best representation of half a day's worth of volume capacity * Ultra: best representation of the average daily traffic volume capacity
@RobsRedHotSpot
@RobsRedHotSpot 4 жыл бұрын
That's a really good breakdown of the traffic volume settings! I always use ultra, because I find it the most realistic on a regional scale. The lower settings are kind of interesting from a gameplay standpoint because they force you to solve little problems as they come up sooner, but I still prefer ultra.

you can use the buggy vanilla seaport even though it doesn't raise the demand cap. The workaround to this is when you finally suffer from "seaport industrial stagnation' pave a road or lay rail out of the city to temporarily raise the demand again, when industry builds up again to your liking, bulldoze the road or freight train station to force them to the seaport again and you can build more than one this way. It works fine, instead of downloading a plug in to fix this with a million dependencies, no thank you

My SIm City 4 is purchased through the App Store, can I still download and use a NAM?
@RobsRedHotSpot
@RobsRedHotSpot 4 жыл бұрын
I think that should work fine. You'd just have to find out where the App Store puts the Plugins folders. Probably under User/Libraries/Application Support or something like that. If you have trouble, you should ask around on Simtropolis. On a side note, as a former Mac user I advise against App Store game purchases. A Steam or GOG copy can be used on any system.

Sadly the NAM mod does not work if you bought the game online from Origin. :(

I don't use GOG for SimCity 4 but it seems to be supported by the NAM team and I know a lot of people use it. Probably perfectly fine. If you have an Origin copy, just buy the game again on Steam or GOG. It shouldn't cost you much more than $10

In 57:53 you talk about going to collage to learn about urban design. You tell that you didnt become an urban designer afterwards. Why not? what direction did you take after collage?

I took Urban Studies as a major in my bachelors and started, but never finished a Masters degree in the same topic. To work in the field in my area, I would have had to do an apprenticeship, and most of the available jobs at the time were in suburban areas and places I wasn't really interested in moving to. I mostly when to school to learn about things that interested me, though, rather than to get a job. I also studied English and French literature for the same reason :).

Hey! For the Traffic Simulator it should come up if you press windows key and type "traffic simulator " otherwise it may not be installed. Try reinstalling the NAM and looking for an install option? It's been awhile since I installed it. I'll check simtropolis for a forum topic too. I will be doing a video on my mod setup shortly!

Check your task manager and search for sc4 processes. I've noticed that Steam seems to keep the process running after the game is closed. Quit any SC4 processes (and possibly Steam) then run traffic simulator

How much mod files/plugins can the game handle if installed in the plugins folder? I have 8.56gb currently.
@RobsRedHotSpot
@RobsRedHotSpot 4 жыл бұрын
I think it probably depends on what the mods are. Many GB of dependencies are probably fine. If it's all plugins that are "active" when you're playing maybe less so. I read somewhere on the forums that the game engine is really only capable of using somewhere between 3 and 4 GB of RAM, for example, so there clearly are some bottlenecks. You should ask this question on the SImtropolis forum for a more precise answer!
