How To Regrow Grape Vines From Fresh Cuttings!

In this video I will show you a simple way that you can take some fresh cuttings from your gape vine and turn it into several more grape vines. Propagating Grape Vines is super simple and most will easily grow roots within 3-6 weeks.
The key is to use cuttings that have new growth as well as some solid stems - doesn't need to be hardwood at this point, but should have some darkening.
Be sure to prune off most of the leaves and scratch the stem a little to promote spots for new roots to grow.
You can also use rooting hormone or honey to help assist the process, but I don't prefer to do that.
Keep the cuttings out of direct sunlight until you are certain that they have roots as they will overheat and lose a lot of moisture through their leaves if exposed.

I was dating a woman who was a Female Body builder and I she had a recipe for Greek leaves stuffing with grapevine leaves and hamburger .she made a meatloaf and rolled them into 1 and a half inch balls Soaked the grapevine leaves in vinegar for 1 hour. That helps the leaves from cracking and splitting when you put meatloaf balls on them .Then you wrap leaves around them and put in a pot and slow cook them 2 hours Then let cool and serve with pineapple slices and a glass of ice cold Lemonade. With garlic bread.

for those of you having tbl. getting roots try this method take a sheet of plastic about 12inchs square wrap loosle around vine seal both ends now scrape a little bark off in the middle of the plastic pack damp potting soil till you fill the bag seal it with tape now wrap it with aluminum foil tight after about 8 wks open foil you should see some sign of roots seal it back up wait 1 month now you may be able to remove everthing cut the vine this should be roots and about 24-36 in vine forgot to mention always start this 36 ins from tip of vine hope this helps this called ( air layering)

You should have cut off the tendrils, removed all leaves but two, and covered them with milky white plastic, a bin liner is super. What does this do then?, well the cuttings are kept turgid and not flagging, as yours did, and they root much quicker as well.

This is great! The only inquiry I have is regarding the soil mix... I've found that the soil mix is critical to the success of striking seeds and cuttings. I'll look around your channel for a video about your soil mix, but if you see this please show me where to go to find out... A 70% strike rate is impressively acceptable, but I'm sure your soil is largely responsible for this success.

I've had the worst trouble growing vines from cuttings. What kind of soil mix do you use? What strike rate to you have?

@@WaterlooExpat Try this... Make an organic potting mix with 70% premium potting soil with 20% coarse river sand and 10% perlite. Take your cuttings from a vine in vegetative cycle and strip the leaves from half. Put that half in the soil mix and soak well. Cut the top off a 1.1 litre clear plastic drink bottle and cover the cutting with the bottom of it. Just twist the bottom of the bottle into the soil around the cutting. This is best in warm weather but not in direct sunlight (for soft leafy vines like grapes). Inside the bottle will become like a humid greenhouse and help your cutting stay alive long enough to throw roots. Don't let the pots dry out but don't saturate them either, you'll find a balance. This method just increases your chances of the cutting taking root and will work with most anything. If your cuttings yet live after three weeks then they will certainly have roots. Good luck loo

if you have vine or tree cuttings put them ia clean jar with about 1 inch water some times i have had rooting started in water before i had time to put in soil i read some to always cut a little off the bottom before placing in soil a week in water dont seem to hurt anything

please do, cause it will save me a lot of money....i bought some flame seedless and concord vines and UPSed them to Nigeria, with no dormant winter period in my part of the world, it would be great if green cuttings can root well, save me a fortune having to order for more and ship down. my grapes are well, just about 2 months old from bare-root cuttings, no trimmings and they are up to 8 feet tall except the concord which is taking its pretty good time getting off the ground. Though the concord is rugged, no insect or larvae had attempted boring it, while i have had some issues with the flame seedless but neem oil done take care of it

Thanks, I tried starting some cuttings July 10 2017. You are awesome. My question is about the length. Maybe because it is mid summer the leaves seamed to be distant from one another . To get an even length my cuttings were 12-16 inches. I did get 3-4 buds under because I used a 5gl bucket with holes in the bottom. What do you think ?

did this years ago and it works not sure what percentage as i only did one or two. Anything vine in nature can grow roots out of the stem, i even accidently grew a monster tomato plant and near the top of the plant it grew roots in mid air not even trying to propagate roots. tomatos act similar..even the likes i cannabis i believe, rooting hormone increasing chances of roots taking, but still works without it.

If a grapevine is grafted, when you make cuttings, are they considered still part of the grafted vine or do they revert to the original root stock?

if you take the grape from top of rootstock then it will be the grafted grapevine without rootstock, it does not have the defensive nature of root like the rootstock(usually in Europe and US against phyloxera), but if it have no disease and pest from root, and survive to fruit, it will have similiar taste and trait like grafted one

Loren Devlin I left out a critical step... they need to be kept in a high humidity place. Misting then with water is also recommended every few ours. It’s best to just place them in a sealed container so it’s like s microclimate/mini greenhouse. Also, success rate is greatly increased if you do this vines that are at least pencil thick.

Charlie Williams mine took until year three and only 4 clusters. Prone very heavy back in the late winter/early spring. I mean almost to only a few feet after the leader.

There’s some comments here to add with what’s shown that could help you get success with cuttings it best to take a good number to increase your chances and depending on where you live can be factor but try it and if you fail try it again spring is a great time to do it as well

I trimmed my grape Vines for the first time about 2 months ago I took some cuttings didn't have any leaves on them and stuff stuck them in a garden container that I had some other things in and to my surprise every single one of them there was six I've gotten a lot of foliage on them for what I don't know is if they have pretty good roots LOL how can I decide when to transplant them since they will need to be transplanted out of this container? That’s awesome! It sounds like cuttings do better when they are starting out from dormant branches instead of fresh cuttings. He never followed up on how his cuttings did and this was years ago so it looks like they may have died.

I made a few cuttings early June this year (wintertime here in Australia) and placed them in water. Two of the cuttings are growing shoots from the buds, and I can see very small leaves. However, they have no roots whatsoever. Is this normal? Maybe I should place them in soil? Please help.

Hey I'm from Texas too, zone 9. It's September and we have a grapevine that is growing on our trellis, it's been around since the 1940s. We've cut it all the way down so many times and it still comes out. But anyways, I'm thinking about making a privacy fence out of the grapevine because the vines grow so fast. It's September and it really doesn't get too cold here in winter(it's the valley) and so I'm wondering if I could propagate them and then plant them along the fence instead of a pot... The sun hits the fence perhaps two to three hours in the morning and is shady the rest of the day. If I propagate in a pot instead, how long before I can transfer to the ground? This grapevine comes directly from France since the original owners of this house came from that side of the world. So these grapes are small and have two seeds in them, but they are oh so good and sweet!🍇🍇🍇

Kayla Mitchell I would wait to propagate the cuttings until late winter. It’ll take 4-6 weeks to take and keeping the pot or ground moist is necessary with little sun. Try to take cuttings with very little leaves - or none at all - and are pencil thick.

just a note on those cuttings he will have better luck by removing all the leaves except top 2 then all groth will go to the vine when it gets long enough to reach the wire one leafwill have a runner left the other right never have leaves from the ground to the wire iits a job to keep them off.

Oi mates if you’re doing cuttings in the spring don’t put them all the way at the bottom of the pot you can drown the cuttings if your an overwatered like me
