My problem with my snare was fixed. I used this method and it just got rid of the ring and I was just stuck and wasn't sure about the next step to take. Long story short, I called the Guitar center since i have insurance on the drums and I used the Rob Brown tuning method. However, the drum specialist and i did have to crank the heads tightly on both sides, but there is no unwanted ring sound and the snare sounded awesome. It did not need a moon gel nor a dot to kill that unwanted ring. Me using the two drum keys was a blessing in disguise yesterday because I thought i ruined my snare wires. Everything is good to go. Thanks Rob and thanks to the drum specialist at my local guitar center. I never thought I could get a Yamaha Stage custom birch snare to sound that good without having to change the heads.

I’ve been playing drums for many years now and have experimented with various tuning methods. This method is a super quick way to get a nice sound out of any drum. It works well provided that you have decent shells, heads, and hoops. Sometimes I use the wrinkle method for toms, but I don’t always like the sound I get. For certain scenarios it works fine, others not so much. But that’s pretty much all tuning. Thank you, Rob, for your no nonsense approach to tuning. Your vids are a godsend, especially for new drummers!

That’s exactly why I decided to make this video. A new drummer isn’t gonna know or care about listening for harmonics or minor 3rds or sliding a drumstick under their snare wires. That stuff hardly matters even once you’re a professional. It ends up sounding exactly the same in the end.

thats tuning… no dampening on earth is get rid of that annoying ring. I know EXACTLY what you are dealing with… the nice ring of a resonating drum is NOT the same as the annoying, nasally buzz of a snare that’s got weird tuning. I have never had a snare that doesnt have nasally buzz off center. Roba snare doesnt sound like that. I always need to dampen it. I have wondering for years, how to have a snare that needs no dampening…maybe my drum is old and damaged. Its a Krupa COB (Slingerland).

Very good demonstration & excellent results! It seems a bit misleading, however, when you say "crank" the snare head. It sounds to me as though you are getting the snare head tight, but still resonant. When I think of cranking a head, I envision getting it near the top of its range, on the verge of choking out. You are clearly not doing that. The reason I point this out, is that I get students coming in with their snare, saying that it doesn't sound right. Most of the time, I just have to back off the tension on the snare head until it starts to ring a bit more when I tap it with my finger. Somewhere they heard that they should crank the snare heard & had no frame of reference for what that means.
