Wow, this was a life saver for me. Putting the fulcrum on the middle finger felt a lot like the fulcrum on traditional grip. The snap and control of traditional always seemed to be lacking in my matched grip, when I switched over the left hand to matched, it felt like a club instead of the control of traditional. Huge thanks :)

@@cszetela1 of course it didn't feel comfortable. Most of us are ingrained to using index fulcrum. Switching to middle finger fulcrum is going to be uncomfortable at first

Hi Rob, greetings from a rainy Scotland. Really appreciate all the efforts you put into your teaching. I don't get the time I used to on the drums, but I love watching your videos and trying out some of the techniques, it's helped me no end. As a very casual drummer🙂 I'm desperately missing the few opportunities to play live, and with other folk at the moment, so for you professional musicians it must be hell. I just wanted to say even though we are in this horrible situation, your talent (and hard work) is still bringing joy to those who watch, and hopefully we'll get back to something like normal soon. Thanks man👊 Steve

Because my R hand is so much more developed from life of use, the first finger fulcrum really works. However on my left hands the middle finger fulcrum allows for more control because I can keep my back fingers around the stick more often

This video is exciting for me. I was taught matched grip by my high school teacher. Mr. B. Lampe. ( not real name) Im a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to how things sound to me. Therefore, i starting working very hard on doing some things with my matched grip in my own time, on the field, to make my strokes sound perfect. I thought it was wrong and i cheated the system because on occasion i would switch my stroke to using my shoulder and elbow. I was shy so i never asked if this was acceptable stroking or not. It just felt right. I would switch the position of my wrists and fingers to get more speed A.K.A. american grip. I was told there was three grips and none of them said anything about american grip. I wondered why I was far more meticulous than any other drummer when it came to positioning of my set. I didn't understand why.. This is because i was too focused on what I THOUGHT I had to do to drum and not what I FELT I had to do. He made me aware he was one of the best drummers he has ever taught. That being said.... You remind me of my teacher because he was the most musically knowledgeable person i have met in my life. Not to undermine him because he really is. He has critiqued many competitions and even judges. He has taken highschoolers to some serious heights. His tips changed me and his teaching methods changed me as well. He had 45 minutes a day and 150 people to teach in high school. You are doing the same for me on my terms. I'm at home taking care of my mom and have had a week to play with my kit. Way too much to learn before I can put something professional together to post. That being said, I believe when you started this channel you hoped you could reach one person that needed you and will give credit to their success. I put in about 10 to 16 hours a day on what you tell me to do. Thank you for your lessons. They have changed the way i think about my music . During my rudimentary rudiment training i happen across some fun ways to practice because of the way you practice. Thanks to your teachings and my past I am excited for my future. Thank you Dr. Brown. You have cured me!

Weckl grip with moeller method works great! Takes your fulcrum and moves it to the middle finger, and pressure off your forefinger; forcing you to use all your back 3 fingers for stability and micro movements with fine touch. Can also bring the stick way further back, for more velocity and rebound. I used to have a bad habit of only using my fulcrum for rolls before I knew any better, and my doubles/rolls were crap. As soon as I switched to the Weckl grip and learned to use wrist and fingers in conjunction, I saw immediate improvement. Great demonstration and explanations, Rob! We all appreciate your lessons very much! God bless! 🥁❤🥁

Thanks for this Rob just what I needed as I'm working on my matched grip and getting my weak right hand up to speed. Got a question for you...as well as the four areas you've outlined for me I found that I've also had to work on strenghtening the thumb area as well as lifting the wrist. Is this another area of just part of the wrist strengthening?

Now I'm going to have to nreak down my finger technique to see if I'm naturally moving the fulcrum to the middle finger. During fast ride work the stick tends to feel REALLY LOOSE and I suspect this is why. Also the pinkie is actively involved "most of the time". No dangle at least. Lol.

Hey man, appreciate all the tips and tutorial vids! I'm currently trying to switch fulcrum from index to 3rd finger. You said the index becomes unemployed, but notice when you're playing, often you still wrap the index around the stick. Just wondering if it's at particular points you do that? Like swapping from wrists to fingers or going into doubles or what? Thanks again :)
@mrc_543
@mrc_543 3 жыл бұрын
My other question about the fulcrum change... since I've always used index, my 3rd finger was always involved in finger work along with ring and pinky... when I hold the stick with 3rd finger as fulcrum, it automatically wants to help with fingers for doubles and quick singles... should it still work in this way or should it purely be for supporting the stick?

Here's a thing about the pinkie. I have a really hard time utilizing my pinkie, because it's too short. My palms are big, but my fingers are short. So my pinkie just can't follow or really do anything of quality to the stick. I've tried to incorperate my pinkie many times, but It's no use. My hands aren't genetically built to be able to learn a really really good technique. I've been playing drums for about 33 years, and my technique isn't bad, but it's not very good either. Of corse I'll never reach your level, but I do consider my technique to be better than my actual playing.
