*HEY Y'ALL! I'm going to be completely transparent here and say that I've considered changing the name of the video, just because I don't want to disrespect VF sticks in any way. But after flip-floppin back and forth, I decided to just leave it. Y'all know me anyways! The straight truth is that I DID think they were great sticks when I was using them, and STILL think they make great sticks! It was just time for a change for me. So...check out the video for the straight scoop on why I decided to switch and to see what I'm hittin' with now!* 🤓🥁🔥

Same here. I started with Vic and I always thought all sticks were pretty much the same. I was always trying new models because nothing ever felt quite right for my hands. I ended up trying a pair of Vaters (my first) that I fell absolutely in love with feel-wise and they ended up outlasting all of the Vics I ever tried. That was 10 years ago and I haven’t looked back.

Over the past few years, Promark and Evans has really upped their games with drumming product and as such I have found myself switching to their side. I am currently loving the 5B Shiri Oak sticks or the Thomas Pridgen signatures. I've tried the black ActiveGrip Portnoy model and that was cool, I'm interested in grabbing/trying a pair of the newer "clearer" ActiveGrip they just came out with. Good luck on your journey Rob, what a great YT channel.

I am a drummer of 49 years and I landed with those exact sticks as well. Promark sent me prototypes of the forward and rebound sticks when they were in pretesting stage and I instantly fell in love the rebound model. But the prototypes were a 5A which is too small for me. When I tried the 5B everything felt perfect. I really love em.
@gaboogablah6 жыл бұрын
I started using promark in the 80s and never changed. They have a certain feel, and the way their lacquer gives a better grip the longer you play, from the heat of your hand. They just feel more solid or dense, and the firth always felt like pine or a dry wood. The fire grain are harder than normal sticks. So you don't need nylon tip for harder tip like on the bells, rides ping, etc.

I've used ProMark since 1993. I started using their black color coated 5b then I went to the 727 ball tip. Then eventually I was turned on to the Neil Peart 747 signature model and have used them till just recently when they discontinued it. And I loved those sticks, Shira Kashi oak is the greatest. I hammer the shit out of them and they last for months. Now I'm using the 747b SKO in nylon tip. Half an inch longer slightly thicker but awesome

I like the design of the ProMark sticks, but I love the Vic tips- nice round (5A). Not oval shaped. Does ProMark have something with similar?
@JakeStaffin2 жыл бұрын
Promark's classic forward line has the old school Promark dimensions with the oval tip, but their Rebound line (which Rob uses) has the same dimensions as Vic Firth and a similar tip shape. For me, the only difference I feel is that sometimes, Vic Firth sticks feel like the lacquer is a bit more noticeable. Vater also has a stick line called the classic series with the Vic Firth dimensions and tip shapes as well which I'm looking to try.

Just ordered a set of firegrain 5b rebounds... as a traditional grip drummer, I'm always looking to find the stick that lets me grip it further back for more power without sacrificing the balance. "It was love at first stick" lol I've been a Vic Firth guy for many years. My only complaint is that the wood tips tend to chip pretty quickly, which gives me a mushy sound and feel on my cymbals. I have lots of Vic Firth sticks that are in great shape but I don't use anymore because the tips are chipped. I should try these fire grain sticks to see if they hold up any better.

Promark has a 5A and 5B Rebound Long (16.5 inches long). If they would make a 55A Rebound Long, I’d be all in on Promark because for a long time my stick of choice has been the Vic Firth X55A. I like the feel of the long rebound 5A, but 5B just doesn’t feel good in my hand. If the would make this stick, they’d have me 100%.
@jpolls233 Жыл бұрын
I got turned on to Vater Fusion sticks. I have not broken one stick yet. A matter of fact I haven't seen a chipped tip off of their sticks either. Normally all wooden sticks by firth etc break off the tips. Not Vater. Sorry,..... not sorry 😉👍 They're only around $7.99 a pair.

Why on earth, in 2020+ would anyone intentionally choose to play traditional grip?? Let alone full time!! It’s undisputed fact that traditional grip hampers one’s playing, especially around a full kit, and hurts their body through compromised body mechanics. One can obviously play this way and some of the greatest on earth played this way. BUT it still doesn’t make it the best way. I’ll never ever understand traditional grip in 2023. 🤷🏻♂️

I've recently switched from Vic First 5AN Extreme to Vater VH5AS. While they're not quite as good in terms of rebound, they just feel that little bit better in the hand. I also really like the ProMarks, they're just way out of my price range here in South Africa.

Vater Fatback 3As are hands down the worst sticks I've ever used. They hurt my hands, feel like logs and just don't bounce well on the heads. No rebound, no finesse. I used to use Promarks but switched to mainly Vic Firth 5As and 5Bs depending on what I'm playing about 10 years ago. I may switch back to Promarks as Vic Firths while feeling great are not durable.
@matthewsherman97656 жыл бұрын
What’s funny is I recently switched from Pro Mark to Vic Firth and then eventually discovered Vater which I’m using currently. If a particular stick inspires your playing than that’s your stick. If that changes over time that’s fine. Always keep experimenting and improving. Pro Mark still makes great stuff, just gotta trust your gut. I think the Vater LA.5A and 5B have great balance and high moisture content which makes them more durable IMHO. Again this is just my preference after playing Pro Mark for 20+ years and then checking out the other brands. They all make great sticks.

Vics have some great sticks just like Promark do. I use the 747 oaks great sticks but I still pick the VF 5a nylon grip and the American classic sticks and 5ab ones and they last me longer than the Promark oaks which tells me Vics use strong hickory and better lacquer. TBF all the stick brands are good and have different strengths. I keep a variety. I'm very light on my sticks though as I pretty exclusively play jazz and very chill beats. I have sticks that are more than 10 years old in my bag and people are always so confused about it. Like yeah I've not broken s stick in years and I don't know what to tell people other than find your surfaces and volume. I have different sticks if I want to really beat the hell out of the kit which is rare.

What do you think about the shira kashi (japanese oak) pro mark sticks?
@Iamadrummer3 жыл бұрын
I used to use Vic Firth sticks. I tried all kinds of sticks from all kinds of companies. I even tried all kinds of Pro Mark sticks(but not the firegrain ones). I hated all the Pro Mark sticks I tried. This made me go back to the Vic Firth sticks since those were the best I have found. One day it all changed. I was at the store I buy sticks at and I saw this reddish brown looking stick in the size I like(7A). I picked them up and they felt great in my hands. I tapped around on the demo pad they had and liked the sticks. I then looked over the sticks and was surprised to realized I had picked out a Pro Mark stick. The sticks were the firegrain series sticks. I bought them and brought them to my drumset. Now I mostly only use the Pro Mark firegrain sticks. I found after testing dozens of sticks from all kinds of companies, even other Pro Mark sticks, that the firegrain series sticks feel terrific to play and seem to be more durable than any other wood stick I have tried. For me and it sounds like you as well the Pro Mark Firegrain sticks are phenomenal and all the other Pro Mark sticks are just garbage.

D'addario has become more innovative in design than any other company. I don't know a lot about their products in other categories, but Evans and Promark are making strides. Most other companies are just releasing the same products with another ply on the head, a stick that has a taper that starts a little bit sooner or something that's really arbitrary. The UV heads were a huge step from Evans, and firegrain is a bigger one from Promark. I don't know if a lot of people here keep up with marching percussion, Evans just released the "system blue" marching snare head and it is the best feeling marching snare head I've ever felt. It has almost the same exact sound as the hybrid head (because it is pretty much the same head), but it has a much softer feeling. Shortly after that Tim Fairbanks and Tim Jackson released their signature Promark sticks, both firegrain. Tim Fairbanks firegrain feel better than any marching stick I've ever felt, Tim Jackson Ralf changed it up. Tim Jackson firegrain are pretty much the same design as Sean Vega's quad sticks, but the nylon bead is actually a wooden bead that is coated in nylon. It's genius.
@RobBeatdownBrown6 жыл бұрын
They hooked me up with both the Fairbanks and Jackson models. LOVE em. D’Addario takes chances, man. I dig that a lot. They go beyond just dipping the butt end of a stick or using coloured mylar on heads for the cool factor. Like, ‘let’s create a thin dip and cover the whole stick. But one that won’t mark up cymbals.’ Or ‘how can we create a coating for drumheads that lasts twice as long as our current coating’ or ‘what if we heat treated a stick like they do with baseball bats’.

Get yourself a pair or two of the Firegrain 5B's if possible, they will definitely last a lot longer than those. Store brand sticks are cheap because they aren't created with the same level of craftsmanship of other drumstick companies, so they will break easier and over time they will be more expensive to keep buying than a few pairs of the firegrain sticks.

I used to be a Pro-Mark fan for years, but after a while, I just encountered too many sticks that felt terribly balanced, split after minimal use, and were clearly NOT pitch matched. I really love all of the stuff that Rob is talking about here as far as the Pro-Mark features (select balance, their innovation with the firegrain, etc.), but I just never felt like they really delivered. Anyone else feel the same??

The Promarks of the past broke too easy. I can't speak for the present. I'm more of an assortment of Vic Firth and Regal Tip sticks myself. I've been using Aquarian composite 5b's on electronics.

Sticks are just sticks, lots of companies make good products but unless someone is sending me a paycheck for using their stuff I'm going to try everything that is available.

Unless they’ve made you a signature model, nobody’s sending you a paycheque to use their gear
