I pick up such super ideas from your videos. And I set my totes up the way you do because it's so economical, fast, and easy. Occasionally, I'll look at a different gardening channel to see if I can pick up additional tips. But, I NEVER watch any past their comment of how many BAGS of purchased potting soil/mix they use PER plant! No thanks. I'll make my own. Just like Mother Earth Robbie does.

Due to autoimmune disorder I have some physical limitation, this past fall my husband helped me build an fill 20 raised beds ranging between 3-4' wide to 8-10' long. Now watching you videos it makes me feel better about how i filled them. Layered plain brown cardboard, free branches, wood chips, green leaves and vegetation, shredded paper, mulched brown leaves, aged cow manure, top soil...plus since it was fall and no plants in the new beds i topped the beds with about 1-2 inches of mulched leaves...and i would collect my kitchen scraps and couple times a week i would go out and dig a trench and spread those scraps in there and cover it back up. I figured, apparently like you do, this is basically like mother nature, what naturally happening out in the woods! When I went out and started planting this spring my beds are full of big fat healthy worms.

FYI: I have purchased over 100 storage totes over the past 5 years that are kept outside, living in SW New Mexico. I have found that the silver/grey and the more pale the color, the less UV rays resistance they have and they start to crack and break down within several months. So, even though I love the look of "Robbie's Rainbow Tote Garden ", for me, I only purchase black and deep navy blue totes to use outside. They tend to last, especially the lid edges, for a minimum of 2 years.

I've been harvesting compost from a few totes and sifted some to use for sowing seeds. The empty totes are being filled again with raw brown and green matter and topped with my own soil. How satisfying, Robbie, to make my own soil. I used to compost in big pots but I learned from you how to garden easy with raised totes. Thank you. Btw, I have been teaching a neighbor your way of gardening and hope to share your way in a village community garden being planned.

No food. I have an issue with worms. They creep me out. I can't help it. I've been this way for 70 years so I don't think it's going away. Lol😂 So far so good. Keeping it watered so it's breaking down nicely. I am going to buy some bags of earth worm casings and add to my mixture and give it a good mixing. She said unless you enjoy watering 3-4 times daily or live in WA state or Oregon where it's basically a rain forest....grow bags just aren't worth it. I found an 8' grow bag at TSC over the winter for $12. Probably because we were -50F at the time & only a nut/me was thinking about gardening. My garden last year did well except for my potatoes. After half a dozen local gardeners said they had great results with grow bags, well...I'm hoping I will too. I reside in The Badlands & we have a lot of clay areas here as well. The only potatoes that grew in the ground for me last season were the Blue variety. Most were thumb-size, but the vine was stunning in color. In November I tossed a few back in to the ground & just dug them up last Friday. They were all mushy, but I was able to grow 10 more over our *Siberian-like Winter.* Thanks to Robbie & Gary's generous tips, I'm throwing that mush into my 1st compost bin which I've designed from a super old Igloo cooler. Best wishes for a thriving harvest, ~ Covah

I love your channel and learn so much great ideas from you. I was wondering do the totes have to be sitting on chairs while composting? My house is near the woods with lots of critters, squirrel, raccoons , rabbit , possums, deer etc can the totes just be left on the ground and put a stiff mesh cover as the lid? Also have lots of fire ants that get into everything so this is a major problem in my raised beds. Thinking I may have to get old chairs or something 🤔 Any advice you can share?

Cooked rice and the like is probably okay in small quantities, but you really have to be careful about the oil and salt that is usually in cooked foods. It might be better to put those in a big, traditional compost pile and stick to raw vegetable trimmings for the totes.

There is a lot of garbage in bagged or delivered soil. It was amazing what SIL found in delivered premium brand raised bed soil. I have found garbage in miracle grow potting soil. The guy my SIL got the soil from says it’s everywhere 🙄 I’m composting some of the chips as the last pile that composted looked better than another bagged brand I had that was super chunky bark. If you collect compostable materials you will save a lot of money and have a better product. I’m going to try a tip from another gardener and use my auger tool and drill to turn my compost. I make sure everything is chopped so it should work great. Cardboard-I do use it for paths under bark. The only thing I’m concerned about is some cardboard use to have arsenic in it to prevent mice chewing in warehouses. I believe those have to be marked.

I have A LOT of weeds. Would you use them to make soil. I’m afraid to use them. If they and the seeds decompose I’d feel better but afraid to try.

I use weeds, and if they have seeds, I cut the seeds off and compost only the weeds.

Are maggots ok in my pitcher. I live in desert and don't see worms. Do I need to buy some. Will maggots destroy my plants in garden? Some got out when I opened lid

Do you not have a problem with the unfinished compost robbing the nitrogen from the new plants?

How did Earth worms get in toot?
@Havardfam5

She wants them in there. It’s good for the soil. They don’t bother the plants. They eat the compost & their “poop” is super for the soil. She puts holes in the bottom of the totes so they have a way to get in. She has other videos that explains it!

I'd like to know that too, I can't see an earthworm climbing the leg of a plastic chair to somehow creep into a tote ... especially not in hot weather! And wouldn't the worms get awfully hot inside a tote, even one filled with soil, saying you found some and put them in?
