Hello! Just wanted to say that I've been marathoning your 'Canal Boat Diaries' series and just discovered your KZbin channel as well and you've brought me so much joy over the last week, living vicariously through you. I'm all the way over in America (Atlanta, GA), so I've never even been to the UK before (well, properly -- I did have a short layover in Gatwick Airport on the way to Italy once!), though I do hope to get over there at some point, if all goes to plan. Anyway, it's been so lovely seeing the country through your eyes. And I look forward to seeing more. Back in the 1730s where the dry dock is now was the main course of the river. The first lock on the present site was built in the 1840s and the largest lock, which was built to take a steam flat towing up to 3 dumb flats, opened in 1888. Seagoing ships didn't arrive until after WW2.
@RobbieCumming3 жыл бұрын
Hello Colin! 👋 So they didn’t think about seagoing boats at all when they added the lock?
@colinlothlorian3 жыл бұрын
@@RobbieCumming ,it had been considered but the minute books state that the locks were to take a steamer and up to 3 dumb flats, carrying up to 1000 tons between them.
@colinlothlorian3 жыл бұрын
The idea of bringing sea going ships as far as Winsford was a WW2 proposal, with 150 ton barges continuing to Nantwich and 100 tonners nearly to Wolverhampton. This was intended to reduce the loads carried on the railways.

Interesting to see the two pack being applied using a aluminium based primer coat, I always thought the shell had to be blasted to bare metal to apply two pack... will be looking into that further! Be interested to see the Naughty Lass get a new paint job this year (maybe for a 3rd series of CBD?)
@RobbieCumming3 жыл бұрын
Loads of people saying that Pete but I think that’s where the alu primer (which I’ve not seen used before) comes in. Yeah I’d need another two series to be able to afford a repaint I reckon!
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget3 жыл бұрын
@@RobbieCumming yeah. Guessing the alu paint works 'magic'.. we want to two pack ours next year - but part of the reason is we want the whole hull shot blasting to remove 40 plus years of paint... (Easier than sanding it off!). When I painted Nuts n Volts last year total cost was less than 300 quid... BUT it did take me a MONTH working on it full time to do it.... And yes it's not quite a 'professional paint job' but from a distance, in the dark with sunglasses on it looks ok! 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe the BBC would fund a CBD 'special' of renovating a narrowboat... 🤔 Oh and if they do I can highly recommend someone as your 'assistant' for doing the graft on the series... I'm available at a bargain price - payable in bacon butties, cuppas and a visit to 'pub of the week'! 🤔🍻☕

Very seldom gets done as it is constantly underwater so shouldn’t rust and any blacking gets rubbed off on canal bottom as they’re not very deep at all.
@RobbieCumming3 жыл бұрын
Easy everyone yes I got it done i showed clips of the finished keel so you can see I just couldn’t film baseplate being painted as wasn’t there when it was being done
@JohnBCN3 жыл бұрын
@@raysmith6891 The question of whether to protect the bottom must be raised as often as which toilet system to use. The majority seem to me to advocate not doing it to save time, pain(t), money, craning, injury. However, when I get moving about in the boat in the morning I hear an initial gloop-glooping of bubbles disturbed from the hull, so I know that there is either electrolytic corrosion going on or oxygen appearing from life underwater all the time. And oxygen means corrosion. Canal Boat magazine has an article on steels, rust and protection (May & June 2021).
