Instead of wasting their lives away in Netflix and the like, people should start watching and implementing whats shown in these kind of videos. So well explained. Shows the considerable experience behind it all instead of just doing theory. At the end, the size of the harvest was a treat to see. I've not seen so much healthy looking ginger in one container. Perhaps a follow up video on how to preserve all that goodness in the form of powdering, candying (other forms) and storing away so that it can last a longer time.

I live in Northern Nigeria (I'm Nigerian) and we plant ginger in April/May and start harvesting as early as September/October. Sometimes, some farmers cover the ginger with dry grass or fresh leaves and let it grow again for the second year instead of harvesting it. This triples or even quadruple the yield.
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
I've found that we get a better crop if we leave it grow as well. I'm still harvesting from a patch that was planted out a tear before this batch. 😉 Cheers & all the best Daniel.

Hey, just found your channel. I wanted to share my experience with growing ginger & turmeric. I live just north of Atlanta, GA, USA (Zone 7, if that helps). I know wild ginger grows here so I decided to plant some raw organic ginger (and turmeric) from the store straight in the ground here and see if it would survive the cold winters. All the green leaves die back during the winter but they come back every year (when it warms up) on their own so they survive with no issue staying in the ground over the winter. No fuss. They don't even get full sun here... they have less than ideal sun (understatement) being in a heavily shaded/wooded area. They do great. No need to dig them up and replant. I recommend anyone interested just give it a try. I took really small pieces that had sprouted in my kitchen before I was able to finish it, and they are coming back bigger each year! Turmeric is super expensive and it has the most beautiful lush leaves! Again they die back in the winter but it makes a really beautiful plant for landscaping in the spring, summer, and fall! edited to add.. the ginger is in a totally shaded spot and obviously I think more sun would be ideal, and it would probably flourish even more, but I'm sort of just working with the space I have... that said, more of a message on it surviving in the ground over winter and doing well even in less than ideal sun conditions.

Nice one Mari. I leave at lest one patch of ginger in the ground here through our winters so we can harvest it fresh as needed. Helps that we live in the sub tropics though.

Rewatching this wonderful video Rob , thank so much , will be implementing your 5 to try my 2nd round of ginger this season . 👌🙏 What a wonderful harvest !! I really miss the good old days when you did such videos , now that you have aquaponics as your major method of growing , I will just rewatch your older videos 🤓.

It is taking a while to get the soil area of the patch sorted out MBG. 👍 Most of the new wicking beds will need to be removed at some point & set up in their permanent positions after we get some landscape work done. Cheers my friend & have a top one.

Thanks, we live in Canada and it gets to -20 sometimes here but I kept a small greenhouse warmed with a small heat fan this year and I have kale, rhubarb, lettuce and strawberries growing over winter as my experiment this year ... ginger will be heading in next year after I harvest the main crop during the summer .. thanks for your help

This has been the best video Ive seen. Some say put in water for a while until shoots sprout but then you have to move again & disturb the roots. So it hot now in France & Im gonna plant a few & see what happens. Found a few bulbs already sprouting so no inhibitor....

I live in Canada and my ginger has recently sprouted. It took about 3 months and it's place in a room with afternoon direct sun. Place a heating pad under the pot if you see the warmth missing. Like yourself, warm weather doesn't start until late July thro August. I wish ou the best of luck with your gimger.

I'm going to try this process in a pot. I wish it like full sun all day because the back of my home is like that. I will try. A friend of mine had some wild grown ginger and sent me some so I needed to know what kind of soil, and how to plant in a big pot. I'll put some rock on bottom to help with draining and then I used compost mostly since I can buy by the bag. I'm excited to start growing. I live in Chicago area, so once hot season is over, I'm going to try and bring it indoors by the patio to see if I can keep it going. Thanks so much for this video by far the best one I've seen to help me!
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
Hi Cynthia. I wouldn't worry about adding rocks to the base as it's a bit of a myth that it will help with drainage. My pop used to use that method & stopped when he noticed no difference & found that the ants liked to move in & set up nests in the space the rocks created. Hope you get a great harvest from them. 👍 Happy growing.

So excited and I can’t wait to grow my own ginger, you’ve made it appear so easy. I buy so much fresh ginger about 500- 600 grams a week to make ginger or yogi tea and sometimes the quality from the store is not the best. Thank you.

Am glad you're enjoying the clips C.P. 🙂 The ginger should do well if you have pineapple growing as they both like very similar growing conditions. 👍 Hope you get a nice harvest of ginger when fall rolls around. 🌱🌱 Cheers.

Hello Thanks to you, I have just harvested my 4th year of ginger and turmeric from my grow bags. The candied pieces are in the pot awaiting sugaring and the ginger syrup from Jeff Herriot is in the pot ready to be bottled. It’s November here and we had our first freeze last night. I had a question on the grow bags. Every year thus far, I have emptied the bags and let them hang dry for the winter. As I grow older and more frugal , I wonder about leaving the soil in the grow bags over the winter. We have drops in temp a few nights a winter that go below zero. My bags are currently in the garden. Some are in trays some are on the ground. How do you think they will hold up if I don’t dump the soil? Do you dump yours and clean them out? Some of mine are growing moss around the bottom few inches. I agree with all the comments. Yours are the best videos going! Thanks for all the attention you put into them.
@RobsAquaponics3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very Much Bonny. I would think they should be fine left over winter. I would recommend feeding them with some compost to get the beneficial microbes going in them for the next season. With our soil, I just "feed" it up with some compost & maybe more potting mix if the level drops to low. I hope that helps some & sorry for taking so long to respond to your post. Cheers & happy growing.

Hope that helps some.

I noticed you separated the mother rhizomes from the crop. Do you replant, eat or discard them?
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
The mother rhizome can be used to start another crop next season Kaarin but I find that a few don't make it & rot in the ground over winter. The fresh rhizome will grow a lot faster than the mother so I tend to process most of the mothers. They can be a bit stringy so I like to dehydrate them & turn them into powder but can be minced & frozen as well. Cheers.

Thank you for this very interesting video. I am living in Spain since a few years and have to try out every plant or flower I put into the soil as the climate can be very extreme here (both ways hot and cold). Growing veggies and herbs in containers seems more interesting than full soil over here. My question however is, the containers you plant them in, do you drill many holes in them to have good drainage? Thanks again.
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
The fabric containers I use are called Root Pouches & drain very well. You will need to drill holes in any containers you use to grow in. Will help any excess water drain away from the roots. 👍👍

More people are going back to or considering gardening now. Praise God for ginger. Instead of just waiting for Covid vaccine, we'd rather plant and consume more of nature's medicine. Anyway, it's still our immune system's job even with vaccines.
