Hi Folks. Have been asked MANY times over the past few years if I could post a clip on building a basic aquaponic system & have finally found the time to knock one together.
This is a basic aquaponic system made from a recycled IBC tank that would take the average handyman a day to build & set up. The beauty of this Chop & Flip system is that it can be added to over time, after you've gotten the bug & want to grow more tasty fish & veggies in your own backyard.
LINK TO PARTS LIST ► bit.ly/ChopAndFlipPartsList
The cost for this build was just under AUD $240 for the tank, pump & all the required plumbing which was bought from retail stores. It would work out a fair bit cheaper if bought from wholesalers & online stores.
The clay cost an extra AUD $150 but rock & other media would be a lot cheaper.
Quick links to parts of the build,
2:48 Stripping down the IBC
3:25 Cutting up the cage
4:05 Marking & cutting up the IBC
6:05 Setting up the fish tank & grow beds
11:00 Pump & plumbing into the grow bed
14:32 Bell siphon
20:20 Adding media to the grow bed
22:15 Pump flow rates & a look at a finished system
25:58 Fish stocking rates for this system

Dear Rob, Thanks very much for this excellent instructional video. I picked up 3 ICB tanks a couple of months ago and haven't done anything with them yet so I really needed a step-by-step video so I didn't make any mistakes. I'll use the video every step of the construction to make my systems and I'm confident they will turn out well now - I'd have surely made a total arse of them if I'd gone into the project blind. I'm going to be using an air uplift for the 'pump' since I already have a decent sized outdoor air pump which should be cheaper to run compared to a pond pump (or three) but if that doesn't work I'll swap that for a submerged pump no worries. Keep up the good work and all the best for 2024. Regards, Richard

@@jessicaevans7451 (my other channel) I haven't built it yet - it's still pretty much Winter here so there has been no rush. I've been concentrating on my greenhouse with tomatoes, peppers and sweetcorn growing on there and also on the main garden with a nation of onions and garlic which are doing great. I'll get around to making the aquaponics set up and it will be mostly solar powered - I'll upload any videos to my Thousand Yard Stare channel.

Hi Rob Bob's, I have recently moved to Brisbane and very new to Aquaponics, I was going to enrol in the Murray Hallam course but figured after watching your videos that I should just dive in and get my hands dirty. I have watched this video a few times and I am starting to put together a shopping list required to do this build. I was just wondering (A few things) if a complete list exists for this build already? Also if this build is still current based upon your learning over the past few years since making this video. I am based up in Strathpine and would love to rack your brain over some beers sometime!

The PVC fittings for the bell siphon are laid out in that clip if it helps, ► kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5KUc4R8icZ6bcU It will probably be too late for you but will be letting folks know once the site is up & running in a clip posted to the channel. I finally got started chopping and flipping :) VERY excited! I have everything I need (will be switching from synthetic to an amino acid based iron chelate eventually). I have a pH meter, EC meter, testing reagents, the works!!! I set up a 32ft camper in an east-west orientation with the doors facing south. I constructed a large timber greenhouse on the south side and installed a wood burning stove. I just harvested my first Del Monte pineapples last summer and I even have some Dragonfruit growing in zone 5. I can't wait to get this thing all put together! Having a four season greenhouse in zone 5 is a MUST HAVE for aquaponics! I'll never need to winterize the system. Anyway - if it wasn't for you and Hallam, I wouldn't even have a greenhouse in the first place! So I just want to say thank you. You've been my inspiration :)

Nice setup, very well, thought out, ut one point on the IBC totes, they do degrade in sunlight so paint or some other coating is important. I live in a more northern climate so until I build a greenhouse no fish for me. My system is very similar only the bottom is merely a tank for manure tea. Mine also uses potting soil, using a bell siphon and media like you are doing may well be a latter addition. As it is my intent is to simply install a timer on a pump to water on a schedule. I am not sure which is a better idea, but thank you for your video, as it gives me further ideas!

Hi Rob,. those IBC don't carry in Thailand i have to customise my fish pond under the ground for about 2 feet making it with a height of 4 feet high with a width of 10 feet & length of 20 feet, cement like a big bathtub with water mixed with air Venturri that is at the end of the fish pond, i have to experiment it for a while & study how the fish swim around it & outlet water cleaner to a double bio-filter,. your aquaponic is very informative, simple & works pretty excellent,. all i got to do is visit the fish pond every day write down on calendar chart how big they grow with a feeding 2 times a day,. thank you for sharing your video.

Cesar Caoili I’ve seen IBC for sell in Kalasin province. Hopefully in coming weekend I’ll go and look for them again. My worries are that they had some chemicals in them, same as the 150l drums I found. If you have a basin from cement to your fish, I strongly recommend to check the PH b4 setting up grow beds. You’ll most likely have to high PH to successfully grow plants. I’m prepping my next setup. In my previous house I had tomato and strawberries. Cheers mate

I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! Thank you for sharing. Your gardens are INCREDIBLE! Jeepers! I wish I could get to that point! I must be doing something wrong. Im just starting aquaponics w/betta jars. I can get a seed or 2 to sprout in my rock wool & hydroton, then -poof! It’s dead! Never going to get fresh herbs or lettuce at this rate! Our betta jars were supposed to practice so I can build the system you build here IF I could successfully grow anything in betta jars.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 жыл бұрын
I think you need to take the plunge & build a slightly larger system Valerie. The small betta fish just don't consume enough food to properly feed a plant unfortunately. I know a lot of folks post articles on them but it's just more a gimmick than a practical growing method. Hope you get to have a crack at a larger system soon.

Finally setting up my IBC system and my local (large green) big-box store was out of 25mm bulkhead fittings, 20-25mm adaptor bushes and 20mm straight-to-male threaded adaptors. Not sure if it is going to upset flow rates too much, but I went with a 20mm bulkhead fitting and discovered, by happy coincidence, that the 20mm straight-to-female threaded adaptor fits straight onto the end of the bulkhead thread. I cut about 50mm off the bulkhead thread and threaded it into its own fixed, top nut and now two of the straight-to-female threaded adaptors connect my standpipe, to my bulkhead fitting, to my downpipe. Simple! And, as an added bonus, the 65mm Bell sits snuggly around the flange on the bulkhead fitting nut and locates it nicely. I just cut the legs 5mm longer to accommodate it.

A slight tip to a problem I've experienced. Very often I have to lift the venturi cover ( hope that is correct) to get it draining properly. I had a thought that it is randomly lifting/floating, thus not working correctly. So, yesterday I put a rock on top for weight to prevent any lift.....it is now working consistently
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kumadude. If it works, go with I say. It sounds like you have the drain pipe sloping slightly uphill from the downpipe in the bell siphon.
@kumadude1
@kumadude1 2 жыл бұрын
Howdy Rob, you are correct, I stupidly cut the ibc centre support beam, thus it is at a slight angle. I also stupidly did not stick the base on solid flat base and thus every year or so I have to jack it up and stick some hardwood under to level it all out. After time the wood bugs and everything else perishes that wood base and I start again. Can't complain too much fishing is now great in the river behind my backyard, trout Murray cod and eel tail catfish.
