Trail Mater

Жыл бұрын

Just the beginning. Getting the cab and front end cleaned up and torn down off the original frame. Start fitting, measuring, and beginning the concept phase of the build. Please understand this is all a process and will take time to gather up parts and then get started on a little later after busy season has ended in Moab. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

I can tell you his philosophy: "Iterations" -- Run it until it breaks, upgrade as needed, keep using what works and discard what doesn't work well; Iteration after iteration; trial and error. The scientific method. After years of that happening again and again, you end up with Trail Mater. and As you can see, Paul is basically copying Rory's two trucks. He's narrowing the hood just like Trail Mater, and he's using a hydraulic boom in the back, just like Old Blue (Rory's other wrecker). Matt is going all out and trying new things -- but it may end up not being very useful on the trails-- we'll see. If not, it still makes a cool sand wrecker. It will be fun to see them all on the same trail some day.

People were extremely frugal during the era when this truck was built. During the Model T years (just before this was built) Henry Ford specified the size of boxes the parts for the vehicles would be delivered in. Those sizes were the ones needed for the wooden floors and other wood components. Just one of the innovations that made Ford a cheaper vehicle to build and a cheaper price. This will be an epic if long term build. The sbc is probably the best choice for anything with limited space and a need for performance (especially cost wise).

I think you are right about making another boom/winch setup. Anyone that has tried to marry frame materials that are more than two decades apart can vouch for the fact that there is a huge difference between the two. In short, modern day frame materials are a lot more durable. And that winch, though the creativity of the person that built it could be admired, the materials it was made from and the welding means it's place is best where it was, most likely, most used - in the junkyard itself (and that done with extreme caution). Even current era frames can have a big difference between them, in regard to flexibility. A utility bed manufacturer I delivered for started putting a wider gap between the factory cab and their beds on the Dodge chassis, because the flex that was engineered into the frames could cause the cabs and beds to foul each other if the trucks were towed while loaded to max capacity. Have fun with it. It will be interesting to see how this develops. I'll be looking forward to seeing how you get power to your tandem rear axles on the 6x6 build. Probably not at all like I'd planned for mine ... but you probably won't have the advantage of having "double-deep 5 under."
