Chappers, you got a couple of guitars in your little collection. I wondered if you own anything by Suhr? Bought a left handed Classic Antique the other year and it frustrates the shit out of me. One day it feels like the best thing I've EVER played, the next like I wish I'd bought something else. Just can't put my finger on it and i respect what you say about guitars, music etc. love your videos and those with the Capt. All the best

There was a pub in my town, which had open jam sessions every Wednesday evening. Anyone could come in, bring in his/her instrument of choice, and play along with the others. While this was an awesome idea, it had some drawbacks as well - there were some people who couldn't behave, had to overpower everybody with their amps, and wanted to play music in which the majority was not interested. They appeared and disappeared quickly however. There were at least two or three bands, which have either got together, or got new members via these events, and eventually that's how I got into a band, which was my first, long lasting band membership :) We've even recorded an album, which I mixed, mastered, and made the cover art for (Logic and Photoshop skills ftw) and it was an awesome experience. Wish that place (and the band) would still exist.

He just means if you don’t want to be in a band with a bunch of people and bass is still the bass of all the band and is very important but you can just get a tone on guitar to make it like there is a bassist if there isn’t but bass is still cool and good to have a member of the band to play it

Top tip to find singers, especially female singers; Put up a wanted add in a dance center or a gym. Lots of people like to sing and dance and they go to all sorts of fitness places and maybe do some AmDram , but you will never find them hanging around in music stores. There is a sort of Theatrical type that is quite different to the Musician type and the combination can make for a great band.

Hey, why not comment right? My name's David, I'm a singer, going to school way up in northern New York. I'd love to start a band with influences from rock and R&B. I love layering my voice, creating intricacies in an R&B style, with some riffs and runs. I'd love to combine that with a hard, alternate, or post-grunge rock sound. This probably won't get any traction but I just wanted to put myself out there. Thanks for reading.

Rob I met you briefly last week when you, Lee and Rabea were in the store. It was a massive moment for me to meet you all! Not only meet you all but play a guitar I dreamed of playing since I was 16 where I kinda found my own love for music and moved away from the lessons I had. You and Rabea both surprised me by saying I should be in a band and to be honest I didn't know what to say, but in all honesty with that happening that is a birthday I will never forget thanks to you guys!PS. Sorry I freaked out after seeing you and messed up the riff!

I met my band at a l jam session in a local pub, which takes place every month. We just played a few random (at least for me ^^) songs together and realized quickly, that we enjoy the same kind of music. :) Our drummer is actually three times as old as I am (I'm 18), but he such a cool guy and a badass drummer as well :3 So, for those of you who are looking for band members of any kind: I'm sure you are gonna find a band to be happy with :-)

Another thing taht Iwould say, si to pay attention to good music. Sometimes you are walking by a Beach, or a street with many pubs, you hear a live group or band playing nicely, or a band with a really good Bassist and is IMPRESSIVE how many musicians will go there with the same purpose to listen to these guys). All of us give hours and years of attention to our instruments, Is a connection that we make with each other (evenby doing that alone). I've met really skilled guitarrists at Reggae street music performances, band shows, small (and good) youtube video channel comments, and just yesterday I've got to talk hours with a guy on Malmseen, picking, Kotzen, Hexafonic scales and all whatnots and guess what, met him because heard him playing good music at a beach pub. (Yeah, a Yngwie an playing beach music, ut again, the style does not matter as the artist soul can transcend it)

In my area, it is all just rap, and assorted gangbangers who have never heard real music in their lives. Only one venue played rock and metal, but that shut down after the owner died in a car wreck. Now, if we want to play a show, we need to drive hours to the next city.

Local metal bands in my area are mostly awful. I've seen a bunch of teenagers paying to play at a gig! That's how unwanted they were. Some wannabe metalcore/prog nonsense if I remember correctly. Two of the dorkiest subgenres, with a bunch of people most metalheads don't ever want to see on a stage. I guess many metalheads are passionate enough about their music that they wish to contribute too...

drummers, do yourselves a favour and learn to play guitar. i've been the drummer in my band for a few years now and it was always a nightmare trying to explain ideas in my head to the guitarists. i took it upon myself to learn guitar around 3 years ago and it has made the world of difference to our writing as we all chip in with our ideas. there is plenty of good equipment to suit every budget (as Rob has explained numerous times in the past) and with the wealth of online resources a tutor isn't even really necessary these days. trust me, you will not regret learning to play this magnificent instrument.

I disagree with your point about bassists, i may be biased but to me having a dynamic bassist who is strong rhythmically and melodically you can cut a drummer out and maybe even rythm guitar, yes royal blood have worked without a guitarist, yes other bands have done exactly as you said but nothing can beat having a living breathing bassist who can give an extra layer of texture and dimension to the music

Hi Rob, as a recovering alkie I can recommend AA as a source of musos. Seriously, it's full of good musos. Done more gigs since joining AA than I've done for years. It's an extreme measure but has worked for me.

Hey Rob here's a question I have: How do you handle, deal with, improve the situation of calluses on your fingers (or lack thereof aka dealing with pain on your fingertips)? Are there any strategies or techniques, or is it just a matter of playing all the time?

Hit_District_, Greetings. Ryan Miller said he left AZ because the music scene sucked and enthusiasm levels here are non-existent. My wife and I find this to be pretty accurate. We're originally from Chicago, where such issues were not a problem. There, I had been in bands (and on "worship teams"). Alas, we are approaching "elderliness" and therefore hesitate to leave AZ. However, we plan on moving north, near the Village of Oak Creek. A guitarist friend of mine lives there, and makes some $ playing in coffeehouses. I hope to join him in some music project. If not we can just jam in a studio we plan on making out of one of those large sheds (you're invited!). Actually, his brother is a premiere bassist, who's also the boss at Nobody's Perfect Thrift Store in Queen Creek. I'm a capable drummer, though I had been inactive for years. I found myself instead working "regular jobs", such as the Chicago Tribune and other papers. My influences include Bill Ward, Phil Ehart, Don Brewer, Danny Seraphine...mainly 70s "classic rock" drummers. I'd like to learn some "advanced drumming" techniques, but that's not a priority. Not all of these technical guys have spirit, but there are a few, like Gavin Harrison and Keith Carlock. (Wow!) Here's a friend of ours, Scott Bonshire, playing drums in Illinois. I'm a player on his level, though his "bucket of fish" fill at 4 minutes surpasses mine---so far, haha! Best wishes, and thanks to Rob Chapman! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bICXYYqEp6afqqM

I need help with my band's drummer. He is very shy and he never get out of the basic drum rhythm (only changing hi hat and ride cymbals) we basically have to tell him what to play and we can't really make any progress. Is there any way to motivate him or something so we can move forward? Because I don't want to kick him out because we are his only friends. (I hope I'm not portrayed as mean/rude) Thanks

OP, it sounds like you're being rational in this situation. That sounds like someone who's hard to work with. If he doesn't want to grow as a musician (or as a person), he's going to have a hard time in the music industry and playing music in general if that's what he wants to do. I've been that guy before (the guy with the fragile ego) and I've been in bands with that guy before and it looks really bad when you're not humble and whine when people tell you that what you're playing isn't fitting. It's good for everyone in a band to have their own ideas and to be in a space where they can contribute, but having the humility to take constructive criticism from the other bandmates is necessary to creating better music and progressing as a band. Personally, If I continually had confrontations like this with a bandmate and he didn't want to budge and grow, I'd warn that dude that he's close to getting kicked out of the band because that shit will only get worse and more contentious between everyone as time goes by and who's got time for that shit when you're trying to make music?

One thing you didn't mention is establishing from the start how much gigging / recording you want to do. Most people aren't full time musicians and many bands fold at the point when the work starts to build up and a key member only wants to do a gig every three weeks.

61 year old teenager, with a similarly aged bassist and drummer (yes! 61 not 16). We write our own stuff and have just started to doing rock / pop covers too. We've just started recording our own tracks (but using session singers) and we've got a gig or two in the pipeline - which surprises the heck out of me because we are by NO means super-duper musicians. We're chilled out and having fun in Godalming / Compton. If, like us, you're local, on your second or third mid-life crisis and fancy croaking or plinking away. Let me know.

I'd also say open mic nights are a musician's biggest friend for finding like minded people. They get a bit of a bad rap for being about poetry or stand up comedy but I guarantee if you're in or near an even slightly big town there will be a pub somewhere that does a regular jam/open mic session where you will be able to find other musicians. I know loads of people who have formed bands from them, and even if you don't form a band from people you meet at the night, you'll meet other musicians who know other musicians and can put you in touch with them.

tip that works for me: take advantage of being in school. talk to people who are in your music class, or who perform in school open mics. talk to the edgy group of emos or whatever, and you will be sure to find a few talented and likeminded musicians.
