An astounding video. You’re not teaching people how to just make a hinged box. Your teaching them how to be a fine craftsman. Many thanks!!

Well done. I like the fact you don't hide or fudge mistakes or forgotten steps, basically uncensored. Cool box, lots of work. You explain things well even though they can be complicated at first, but the box is complicated and requires near perfect precision. Appreciate you taking the time and the video quality is very good. Cheers. Kelly

Your videos are great! I am a Veteran living with PTSD, Depression, and Anxiety and was strongly urged to find new, healthy hobbies. Woodworking always interested me but your videos have helped me tune in to the beauty and artistry of being a true craftsman. Thank you for all of your tips and training. Your confidence has inspired my own confidence in working with hand tools. I hope to take a formal class of yours in the future.

Not only a beautiful finished product but some of the very best instruction on youtube. To often the basis of the box are omitted, but you started the project explaining the details. You also did the explanation by showing all of the mistakes that were made so any one trying any project would know that even the best craftsman makes mistakes and the true test is in correcting those mistakes. Just a very good job from start to finish.

1 hour & 16+ minutes... :-) Enjoyed every second of it. What it's taught me is the patience needed to execute something like this without botching it. Extreme detail - Any serious, aspiring woodworker will love this video! Thanks Rob - and whoever ran the camera for you! As someone mentioned, the sound faded in spots, but was still legible. Makes me itch to get more time to try some things out myself! I don't have the funds free to go ahead and order that kit - or I certainly would! It takes so much of the tedium out of doing such a fine hinge point.

Great video! I am eager to try the wooden hinge, and have recently purchased the tool for 1/4" and 3/8" from you. Cutting the groove in your video was great to see as I was contemplating of several ways to do it, and appreciate the tip to cut the inside lip a bit lower to allow the lid to close completely!!! The dowel manufacture was really cool, but I do not have a plane blade to build that set up, but will find, purchase or adapt a sharp edge to do it. I am 73, retired and always have dabbled in woodworking and now have a 12 x 24 shop that is pretty well equipped to suit my needs. Should have a bigger one, but at the time, I thought it would be big enough...LOL...I was wrong. I have a place for everything, just cannot leave anything out after I use it or I will trip over it! I love the hobby, have restored a few pieces, made some furniture, but am really getting into boxes....and looking forward to my first wooden hinged box. Thanks for what you do...wish you lived closer to NE Pa.

One thing though......would you let your daughter or wife run a router with out hearing protection? Nice. For people who have difficulty with making dowel, try a long plug cutter in a drill press into end grain. Doesn't achieve the same grain matching, but does produce a lovely, perfectly consistent, engineered dowel.

... and here's an alternative, by British maker/designer Matthew Burt. Not sure how he does this, but notice he doesn't flush-off the hinge, and says that he uses stainless pins www.matthewburt.com/furniture-design/smalls-furniture/product/rocking-box/
@malcolmmacpherson13077 жыл бұрын
... in my workshop I'm calling this a Cosman hinge. I've made a couple for oak boxes and they look cool. I've tried a number of times over the years to make wooden hinges that don't look out of place on small boxes, and this is the first that works. There's an article or comment in an old Fine Woodworking that also shows a very similar approach, but Rob deserves the credit. Without his jig I use my drill/mill to make short dowels and concentric pin holes. Works, but is slow. A jig is the way to go

It says it all when someone as skilled as yourself still struggles to work out imperial measurements on the fly, such a ridiculous system for fine detail work.. that being said it's wonderful to watch a fine craftsman at work & a beautiful box.
@JTMarlin85 жыл бұрын
That's why we use decimals. Walk into a modern machine shop or engineering firm and you'll see that units are either straight up inches or straight up millimeters, thus it makes no difference whether you're using metric or imperial. The hardware may have fractional nomenclature, but everyone knows that 3/8 = .375, etc.

I watched this video 5 months ago and watched it again. It's a thrill to see that hinge when you open the box for the first time. I noticed that when you routed the groove that you did not get any burn marks. What is the secret to no burn marks? Maybe you don't have a problem with burn marks but if you do get any, do you just glue to the burn mark? If you sand out then the dowel won't fit snug. Do you wax between the pieces of the dowel? on the end grain of the dowel around the metal pins?

Have you seen Elkhead Tool's dowel making jig? When they occasionally show up at shows they promote it in conjunction with Cosman-style wood-hinged boxes they've made. They're petrified of product liability because the jig uses a spinning table saw blade where you employ a fixed (and finicky) plane blade. At one point they were requiring a disclaimer/release before they'd even sell it to you. I bought one but haven't tried it yet.

hi Rob, love the videos as always. any chance you can do a dedicated video on how you make your dowel maker? Rob, I recently found this video and decided to use this idea to hinge the back legs on some angled tablet stands for colleagues at work since we are still using mainly online meetings rather than face to face and one or two have complained of neck ache as they are hunched over the small screens flat on the desk. Having spent some time making a brass jig for making the central hole in the dowel I tried to use a core box bit to cut the rounded groove but have failed each time. The router bit is new and I have tried the whole range of speeds but nothing seems to work; the bit just doesn't want to cut the timber (some cedar). I have even tried a carbide bur and while it cuts a little better it still requires a good deal of downward force on the stock and 3 or 4 passes to make a suitable groove. Am I missing something? Mike
