Besides a lathe, you really should get a granite table and a height stand for measurements as that is the best way to check for flatness and thickness. That way you can much more precisely file your rotors...

I agree, having the right tools makes every job infinitely easier and the results better. Honestly maybe they should get some consultation from people who really know about that stuff. Anyone who has managed equipment and workspaces in a reputable machineshop making precision parts with tight tolerances. They will often know what to invest in and what you can 'skimp' on, depending on the application and needs. And then there is engine diagnostic equipment, being able to tell what is going on while an engine is running, vibration, when and where combustion happens inside the chamber. I know a lot can be done nowadays with sensors and infrared cameras. Though it may be best to outsource this.

100% Agreed. There's a bunch of places that sell science grade tops for cheap as labs decommission them. Slabs that could crush a Smart car. For Rob's work, that'd be more than sufficient and honestly, a surfacer can come over an surface it/check it if it feels off and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either.

Hey Rob, I have a little story you might enjoy, a friend of mine worked for the Ford test facility in Belgium, when de Focus RS was in development, they had a 2 ROTOR turbo prototype focus RS, my friend told me it was an insane car to drive, he really liked it’s power train, but due to it being not so mainstream, Ford decided against it. And that’s how we almost had a Ford Rotary Focus RS Edit: I’m talking about the MK3

Hi Rob, just a tip. Your tightening tolerances on the dowels might be down to tool wear. If your working to micron accuracy you will get wear and tapering of the reamer from the tip of the tool doing most of the work. In the R&D machine shop I'm in, we use carbide reamers for 1/2 jobs depending on the accuracy of that. A Zeus book might help you with your limits and fits, if you are going into this a bit more maybe a go/no-go gauge, you will be able to specify specifications of this for your application but bare in mind these also wear. Just a food for thought. Great videos and you're not doing if your not learning! I pick things up every day 👍

@@robboss1839 it’s not smooth brain, it’s about putting in the amount of work that is commensurate with the results you’re looking for.
