Rob buddy, you’ve gotta stop this bad habit of coasting into corners with the clutch depressed. You’re losing out on the one of the biggest contributors to the cars stability for corner entry in both engine braking AND the decel aspect of the diff. It’s one of the worst things you can do….. I know you’re managing downshift issues, but it’ll make everything SOOOO much better if you stop that terrible driving habit!

Dope to see you getting some more track time! One easy thing you can do to make you driving feel more confident is to stop shuffling your hands on the steering through turns. In other words, keep you hands at 9 and 3 on the wheel unless you actually need to turn harder (some of the tighter hairpins). 1) It makes you laps more repeatable because you hands will always be in the same position during turns so you can feel the differences that you did with your driving lines. 2) You will be able to feel how the car loads the front suspension better cause you hands stay connected the whole time. This will also let you be more confident in the braking to turning transitions. 3) If you do have a little under or oversteer, catching it will become a more natural over time. 4) In the C8 you will always be ready to shift when you start going manual with your shifting. 5) Racer nerds wont pull their hair out when watching :) I teach racing and this is one of the first things I have people do to help them build their consistency and have bigger balls. I hear you are starting to do some sim racing too. Maybe practice it their so you can get accustomed to it. Keep on making that 4 rotor sing!!
@HectorCabrera
@HectorCabrera Жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. I mentioned the 9 and 3 hands and to stop shuffling around in his first track outing months ago with the Turbo II RX-7. His buddy that was helping him with instruction seemed to blow it off as being ok, but that's absolutely not true. No need to move your hands from 9 and 3 unless it's a very tight hairpin turn.
@scotty305
@scotty305 Жыл бұрын
@@HectorCabrera tell that to Randy Pobst. Here's a video showing him instructing a racer in Porsche which has pretty tight steering ratio, and not once does he mention '9-and-3'. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKbQl3x3r7V8jLs 9-and-3 only works for gokarts or formula cars, the shuffle method works better for nearly everything else with a production-based steering rack.
@HectorCabrera
@HectorCabrera Жыл бұрын
@@scotty305 In that video, they're focusing on slide control. Sliding and drifting are completely different than tracking your car under control. Yes, sliding/drifting you need to be shuffling around at the wheel. Otherwise, while under control there is NO need to move your hands from 9 and 3 unless it's such a tight turn that your arms cannot cross each other. ;)

Exactly! I did a flat shift setup in a 250cc 2 stroke gearbox kart. So much quicker to leave your foot pinned hard on the gas changing up and not having to use the cltuch to go down the box! Can then just brake with your left foot into corners and know your transmission is engaged all the time. He's defeating the whole purpose of his clever transmission at the moment!

I think the most important part of a build is the "Learning curve" part. Sure. You can pay engineers to dial it in for you. And, that is definitely an option. However, the knowledge you gain now is more valuable than paying someone to make it fast for you. Now you know every feeling, every step, every improvement. Which leads to you knowing your car better than anybody else. Keep dialing it in. Oh, and the experts are right on this one.... get a freaking firewall built lol.

road course track days are awesome. glad too see the projects getting properly beaten on and you having fun. Get the 4 Rotor's clutchless rev-matching downshifts working asap. For the power and capability of that car, go with paddles. Keep those hands on the wheel at all times. Also, stop shuffling your hands on the steering wheel. Keep the hands at 3 and 9 unless you really have to turn the wheel that far (you might want a quicker ratio steering rack to reduce steering degree input). But stop shuffling the hands. Harder to save an oversteer moment if your hands aren't always at the same position.
@the1nicko

I was going to say the same thing but who am I haha, the hands were bothering me though, hands shouldn't move positions for those small turns. You feel more confident going faster through the turns with a proper grip.

3 things that I find really confidence inspiring as far as driver comfortability is having my pedals, and shifter in a place where I don't have to think as much when I'm performing an upshift or heel toe downshift. On my old miata i had a 3 inch shift knob extension so the distance to the wheel is shorter for faster shifting and less time with my hands off of the wheel. And it also had omp pedal covers so I could move my brake and gas pedal closer for heel toes, and my clutch in a position where my leg is straighter (it was kinda at an angle before because of how small the foot well is). Those two small things alone helped me be one of the smoothest consistent drivers out of my friend group, because it allowed me to focus on driving and let my muscle memory do the rest Hope any of this helps, keep ripping😎👍🏾🔥

"It's amazing the gauges still work in the c5 with the rotory swap" Rob's taken special care to ensure they still work. Still irks me he doesn't pay the same amount of attention to detail when it comes to the various status lights that are still on (like the traction control and/or ABS) or clearing the engine warnings from the C5 ECU and looking for a way to tie them into the, I think it's a Haltech? Once he's done all that, it'll be as close to perfect a swap as it can be

I’ve been watching you for a while Rob and I love the content as always. I love the fact that you’re not only building a monster you’re learning how to drive it too. However, I have two critiques: someone else said it but I’m gonna repeat it, you gotta use more engine braking into the corners. I know you’re working on the autoblip downshifts but either way, you still gotta be downshifting to maximize engine braking. I don’t currently have a car I can take on track but I ride a motorcycle and I play lots of racing games and the same concepts apply. I’ve found that as I’ve got better control over braking into corners on one I can get better/apply things I’ve learned to the other, and throttle/brake control is everything. I’m not gonna try to explain it because there are several videos on YT explaining the concepts but I can tell you from the saddle of a bike and fighting on lap time leaderboards that braking into a corner while downshifting to keep the motor about halfway through the rev range puts the balance of the vehicle forward which lets you turn in better and keeps the vehicle stable, especially if you can trail brake a little. It also lets you roll onto the throttle at the apex which loads the back end up and lets you get out of the corner with max yeet. Which leads to my second critique, I think you might like longer gearing. I know that you’re not WOT or hitting limiter yet but having longer gearing might help you drive the car better since you’re not shifting all the time. The car obviously makes enough power so instead of having to shift down like 3 gears, if you’ve got longer gearing you might only need to go down 2 and you’d still have max yeet. I got long winded but if you take anything from this watch a twist of the wrist 2. It’s an old motorcycle video explaining how much throttle control effects your riding and I’ve been able to apply to every vehicle since. It’s on YT.

From your last drive in the 4 rotor, I get the impression that whilst you're learning the car it might be a good idea to downshift with the clutch, it means you can heel/toe down shift for much less chaotic brake zones

A tip for the handling of the C8, Michelin tires have a soft sidewall which can make the car handle sluggish. So either change tire manufacturers or get skinnier ones so that they are a bit stretched.

From driving on a pretty good sim racing setup, with a mid engine car like the Porsche GT3 one thing i learned was that if you brake hard then gas it when going into a turn it will give you just enough oversteer to then get faster lap times and get you around faster then having to battle that understeer. I've played around with that method and I'm no expert but it works for me. Give it a shot!👍 also that's with stability control and TC on.

That thing sounds like pure evil. When your downshifting,....it sounds like the most pissed off mechanical object I've ever heard. So awesome.

Hey I want to say that you have a wonderful car, great setup and I’m loving even more that your help to keeping the rotary engine alive. My only wish is I would love if you can say in the revs just a little bit high and able to keep control. But again much respect for you building this beautiful machine. ROTARY POWER FOR EVER
