IMPORTANT LIKE SO HE SEES THIS!: That seat is too small for you, you need a taller one. The highest point on the belts is over your shoulders wich can cause your spine to compress if you hit something. The holes in the seat should be over your shoulders.

Hey Rob, just a comment on the steering wheel 'palm'-rule-of-thumb. The further away you have your steering wheel the more power you'll need in your shoulders to turn it - and by trying what you said it seems to be too far away to me. After building a couple of custom single-seater racing cars, I'd say don't be afraid to adjust the steering column position and wheel to suit YOU. Elbows being bent at 110 degrees, that's where we have found it to be most comfortable for race tracks after numerous ergonomic studies with multiple drivers of all types of heights and body types.

Well Christian, the studies me and my race team have done we found using broomsticks in the back seat, is the most ergonomic way of controlling the race car.

@@Breakthehabbitzz With you on this one. Been racing a bit my self and having a proper steeringwheel/seat position is pretty damn important! Not only will driving with fully extended arms fatigue you (yes! racing is much, much more straining than some people think), but sitting so far back will also impaire your movement and reactions + compromise safety like you said. None believers should just take a look at any real race car. It is not without reason race cars are designed the way they are.

With those shoulder straps, you might find that you'll have to raise the bar so they don't pinch down. The straps aren't meant to loop on such an angle, they should be almost level with your shoulders from behind. This is because as you are launched forward at like 3+ G's you'll break the bones around your shoulders (collarbones, shoulder blades etc) from rotational force alone. If you've ever thought "Why don't passenger cars allow 5 point harnesses if they're safer?" it's because you're less likely to have movement inhibiting injuries from a crash against airbags and a single three-point tensioner belt than you are in a 5 point harness. With the presumption being that if you're in a 5 point harness, and crash, there will be safety marshals etc around to help you. It's also why race cars have fire suppression systems and external cutoff switches and passenger cars don't.
@corriegillett25364 жыл бұрын
The FIA mandates harnesses should be between 0 to -20 degrees over your shoulder, so either pulling straight back of slightly down.
@angussiegloff52384 жыл бұрын
5 point harnesses are only safer then 3 point and air bags when a HANS device is used. The reason they aren’t used in passenger cars is 1. Visibility it’s impossible to do a shoulder check 2. No one will want to wear a HANS device and helmet every time they go to get milk 3. Comfort 3 point seat belts are much more comfortable then 5 points as for a 5 point to be effective it needs to be tight. Racing harnesses are incredibly easy to release to escape from a car on fire so that is not a problem

The shoulder belts should go through the upper hole, as a rule, they have to meet your shoulder at 90 degrees or more. i.e. they should pull you back only, not down.
@jalava784 жыл бұрын
They should point 0-10 degrees down optimally, with HANS / FHR must not point more than 20 degrees down and never up from horizontal plane.

Rob consider the Simpsons Hybrid device instead of the Hans. The Hans is good but if you're not carful and dont't have the right seating angle the Hans device can break your ribs in the event of a crash. I use the Hybrid in drag racing and can't tell you enough good things about it. It's a bit more expensive but it's really worth it!
@nickcunningham-moorat32334 жыл бұрын
Hans devices are available in different angles. The correct device should never break ribs. I have been in some massive shunts and the Hans device has never been a factor in injury. It has saved my neck on multiple occasions.

My 2 cents are you NEED a wing head restraint seat and in particular one that fits your torso length so if something bad happens you don't compress your spine and break it also a frontal head restraint either a HANS as you said or a SIMPSON Hybrid. I have to have all these types of safety for doing gravel rallying in Australia. One thing I always see is people with top specs cars and skimp on safety. Keep the seat in it now for road use but have a proper racing seat like a OMP HTE-R or Sparco circuit pro etc etc Also like to add I have been in some big rally crashes and the equipment saved me. One roll over my Stilo WRC Des helmet broke!
