The AWD 4 rotor is now capable of making the peak power we’ve planned from the beginning. This ignition is used on drag cars pushing 100 PSI of boost making over 1300 hp on 2 rotors. Huge thanks to Fuel Tech for teaching me how to make huge power

Degloving is the least of your worries when wearing gloves on a mill.The glove will make your hand stick to the bit, and mills don't give a shit about you. And then there's other parts of a mill too that can catch and grab.

Very happy to see all the comments about the gloves I have another tip for milling. Looked like you were doing it a little bit, but make sure when you are going to the dimension, don't do short movements of the axis. You want to go "past" it far, then slowly approach it from one direction rather than passing it repeatedly like you're solving a padlock. I hope that made sense

You pretty much nailed it with the clamping there! Normally it's not the best idea to be wearing gloves while working on a machine since the glove can turn into a handcuff dragging you into the machine spindle. Don't wear long sleeves and use a cut paintbrush to brush away the chips. Also I would recommend lots of coolant while doing deep pockets/side cuts/drilling on aluminium parts if you ever plan on doing that since the aluminium will gum around your tool and just rip it in half like it happened to me. Most importantly: Trust your tingling spidy sense!

Rob, when you close in on a dimension with the mill, you have to bring it in from the same direction from where you zero the read-out. There's "slack" in the gantry, it might not have been much, but when you start making complicated parts it can ruin them (by missing dimensions. Do center drill before holes too, drill bits will skew/deflect the longer they are

When you've got mounting holes in your piece it makes sense to drill them first, then use them to hold the workpiece to the bed (or scrap plate). That way the clamps won't get in the way and if you need to take it off for another process, or to turn it over for example, you can line it up exactly where it was and your DRO won't need recalibrating. Nothing wrong with what you did as you can see from the result but might save you time in the future.

Just a thought, now that you have the "proof-of-concept" working. Use pemnuts pressed in from the bottom for the upper coils, you could even tack weld them to the plate if you wanted. Then use some Loctite to keep the bolts from working back out. I would probably mill out for the bottom mounted coils (so they're "inset" into the plate) to increase the clearance from the engine itself, I'd probably use pemnuts (pressed in from the top in this case) and Loctite there too, just have to mount those to the plate before mounting the plate to the block.

I don't know if anyone is interested in knowing how coils work, but I'll share the knowledge: Like Rob said, a coil has a buch of cable coiled inside, it's called an inductor. Inductors are very resistive to changing currents, just like capacitors are very resistive to changing voltages. If you have a capacitor and you very quickly change the voltage on it's terminals you create a massive current spike as the capacitor "resists" the change in voltage, and if you change the current very quickly in an inductor, you get massive voltage spikes as it tries to "resist" the change in current. The coils in a car have a constant 12V on it's terminals, those 12V create a current flow through the coil. When the ECU triggers the coil, it suddenly cut's ALL of the current going through the coil by creating an open circuit. The coil then tries to resist the change in current, but there is nowhere for the current to go, except the spark plug. This creates a massive voltage spike (thousands of volts) as the coil tries desperatly to keep the current flowing, even through an open circuit. Rinse and repeat.
@brianr5355
@brianr5355 4 жыл бұрын
Mill out the alu plate to the shape of the coil and ditch the spacer for the bottom row, this will increase the air gap between the lower coils and the engine and help keep from cooking them. Bonus points cut heat shields that mount to the same holes but run under your lower coils, split the difference in the air gap, it can have a huge impact on reliability. A lot of drag racers mount their coils on the top of the wheel wells or on the fire wall to get them away from the heat, short plug runs aren't as important as spark reliability/quality from heat soak.

I’m pretty sure the reason they wrap the wire pair is to reduce electromagnetic forces since they are canceling each other out, that’s why for wiring in a building or a house you can read amps if you clamp around positive and negative

You should tac them nuts on for easier assembly/dissembly rob, save you needing 2 tools to put it together etc. Well done on your first milling experience!

Awesome work with the mill man!! I've always wanted to get into mill work, welding and all that. Recently I've tried making aluminum parts free hand for my R.C. trucks and they don't come out looking as good as that. Love the channel man, keep up the good work.
