17:26 You say that the porphyria shutting out the weather could be a metaphor for his thoughts/feelings, could you not then argue that the way he describes the weather from earlier, "aggressive and angry" could actually be describing his own thoughts as "aggressive and angry" again linking to a hidden psychopathic mentality

this is just my favorite poem and i re read it tonight and the last time i read it was before the internet lol...what occurred to me this time reading it is, what if porphyria came into the cottage on that stormy night and her lover was dead which is why he was so unresponsive and when she realized he was gone, she used her hair to kill herself in his lap so they could be together forever and the poem is written by the person who found their bodies, first from the point of view of the deceased lover and then his own point of view, describing how he found them and what he did and back to the point of view of the lover.. I LOVE THIS POEM SO MUCH

You can argue women were not to be in control of relationships. Also in the begging the weather is described as something spiteful this could show that she wasn't supposed to be their anyway. If you think about the bit where the elm tree tops blow in the wind it gives the connotation of hell because their elm tree-tops in front of hell (in mythology) and they could get burnt, so the point is Browning (poet) is trying to say that the house can be what burns her down/this could be the end where she dies Towards the end of the poem the man treats porphyria like and object referring to her as "it".#BTW this isn't from a professional, but what I thought and have told my teacher in which she conformed it could be true.I am still in secondary school as well.
