I wonder if the poet thought about all of this when writing his poem
@sebastianobrussato77454 жыл бұрын
'Pond' the use of this noun possibly represents the cyclical nature of life, this works perfectly with the poem being cyclical itself, it speaks of a relationship and comes to somewhat of a conclusion. The enjambment could present the passage of time, the lack of enjambment in the final stanza shows a juxtaposition in the passage of time, the man has gotten over the woman and perhaps does not care about the woman but is still effected by the woman, as presented in the quote, 'have shaped to me.'

PLZ READ the ryhme scheme is perfect throughout, apart from one half-rhyme of 'rove' and 'love' the reader naturally wishes for the rhyme scheme to continue and so 'loath' is what the reader is wanting to pronounce instead of the word love. is this representing his true emotion? can i have some alternative opinions on the significance of this?

In terms of circular structure, I would also argue that the ending having the memory of the pond become 'greyish' could reflect how his memory of his relationship is now dead, symbolising his moving on. However, it could also convey how Hardy feels that his love continues to become increasingly cynical and deceitful.

I'd disagree on last stanza - i'd say Hardy is saying any future experiences that again reiterated to him that love can be deceptive, hurtful, cruel will immediately bring to mind that moment in time with this love and love experience, and all the featues of that moment associated with it - her face, the cursed by God sun, the tree and the pond edged with the grayish leavse of the tree.

I also don't the tone of this poem as "angry" but more sad, wiser, looking back with the eye of experience and wistful. Also disagree that this is a negative poem, it is a poem about life and love; the speaker's wisdom in years hence encapsulated in an earlier moment of time which remains embedded in his memory.

Hi, I just have a quick question, if Hardy rejected religion what was his purpose for mentioning God twice in the poem? Thank you!
@sachikominsat7057 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think that the second mention of God was simply a way to link back to the first stanza. Those last two lines mirror the description of the first scene in other ways, such as the mention of the "grayish leaves". As for why he mentioned God at all, I'm not entirely sure, but that's why he uses religious imagery twice. Hope this helped EDIT: Just watched more of the video and God links to the supernatural themes present in poems of the Romantic Era

the context part..just how much do we need to memorise???
@poppyella22057 жыл бұрын
Probably not too much, it's just useful if there's a point you wish to link it to. In poetry, AO3 which includes context is 15% of the mark you'd get for the entire answer, so ensure you put a little in. On the other hand, if you just list information on context and don't link it to the language techniques then it'll be worth nothing. I like the information mr. buff gave on the word Chidden; Many of Hardy's language choices reflect a much more archaic period than the victorian times, ‘chidden’ is derived from the 12th century word meaning rebuked - is an example of using context, if you were to go on to analyse more.

@sabz858 жыл бұрын
what do you think an example exam question for this poem could be?
@poppyella22057 жыл бұрын
It's hard to predict because it could essentially be on anything, but it's likely to be on use of nature, memory, symbolism, or endings of a relationship, to be linked with another poem. Never plan for specific questions though, it could be on something crazy and unpredictable and you'd just have to work around that.
