During Paris press conference for Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr. joked about being jealous of Gwyneth Paltrow and the fancy schools where she learned French. He then had this punchline "They don't teach French in jail!".

He wasn't blaming her for his history or begrudging hers. He simply realized, when she spoke French so well, that he was totally out of his element, and she had just proved herself to be very impressive. His way of minimizing his own embarrassment was to draw exaggerated attention to BOTH her impressiveness AND his own ineptitude, a comic approach that successfully gained the crowd's "forgiveness for his ignorance", lightened the mood and put him IN his element. They're both BRILLIANT!!!

He was taught phonetically and had no idea of what he was saying. He also speaks French in both Sherlock Holmes movies. His pronunciation is great for someone who has never spoke French before. Much more better than several English people in Ontario who are exposed to French a lot more than Robert but will not make any effort to speak it.

The best part of this is that he absolutely does not sidestep or downplay or try to hide away his past; he owns it. "They don't teach French...in jail!" My only hope is that the recovery we've all been witness to, and this career resurgence he has built on that recovery isn't a falsehood. His is a story of success at overcoming (or riding through to the other side of) addiction, and he doesn't try to keep it a secret or sweep it away. More freakin' power to him! LOVE RDJ.

English-speaking people can't seem to pronounce the sound 'ouille' or 'oi', like 'froid' or 'grenouille', because I think this sound is not used in your language. While for French-speaking persons, the sound 'th' is a real struggle.

I fell in love with Gwyneth Paltrow in the series "Spain, On The Road Again". Where she travels around Spain eating at different places with Mario Batali ,Mark Bittmen, and the absolutely gorgeous Claudia Bassols. Micheal Stipe from R.E.M even tagged along. They traveled all over Spain eating different food, seeing the sights and cooking with different chefs. It was on of the best shows I have ever watched!

I was simply responding to a judgmental statement about Robert Downey Jr. in a totally off topic statement about, "Of course, they don't teach French in jail, and they shouldn't; IT'S JAIL!" I felt obliged to point out how Downey was taught and encouraged by his father to be a drug user. Then I got sidetracked into the idea that teaching prisoners a second language could theoretically make them more viable in the job market upon release, curbing the rate of recidivism.

The thing I find really funny is that, the statement to which I responded has been removed due to too many negative votes, as has mine. Also because many words have the same meaning, AND one word often has many different meanings...sometimes even opposing meanings. Add in our slang, idioms, and various regional dialects in every English speaking country, English is...without a doubt...the hardest second language to learn. For that matter, it may be the hardest PRIMARY language to learn, considering how many native English speakers butcher it on a regular basis.

Setting aside the fact that Robert Downey Jr.'s father gave him his first joint at age 12, setting him on a path of drug abuse and addiction that would taint the next 20 years of his life, I tend to agree with you. Jail SHOULD suck! However, if part of prison's purpose is rehabilitation in order to prevent recidivism, then perhaps teaching a second language would make convicts more useful in the HONEST job market upon release, or at least make them think about moving to a new country. ;)

As a PRIMARY language, but people in many other countries learn it as a second language, particularly because, at least right now, English is the language of global business. That may not always be the case, but right now English is far more pervasive than you acknowledge. By the way, the official language of Brazil is, in fact, Portuguese not Spanish.
