I've always assumed he was a time traveler from 1943. His job in his old life was narrating cinema news reels on the war effort. Somehow he was transported bodily to 2005 and ever since he has been locked in a dark room eight hours a day watching old sitcoms trying to catch up on current events and pop culture. Someone must let him out every night at 9pm with a freshly pressed suit and point him to the stage for his set.
