History.....one of the most important subjects in school and now gone these days. Great presentation. My folks are interred at Arlington and I guess they get to hear all these great presentations. I wonder of what's presented is fact and fiction. I'm not one to take someone else's word blindly. I believe this presentation is fairly true. Still, there's a ton of other notable facts to keep in mind as well.

Just to push back on this idea that Lee was "traitor" if you read his letters you will know what he didn't enjoy killing his country men. In fact his first major battle he lost because he was expecting to be able to talk it out. Which lead to the death of many of his men, and after this event the Confederates call him Granny Lee because of being so passive, and slow to respond to onslaught. He was also against slavery, to some up his opinions on it. While he though that the abolishment of slavery was a good idea, it was just that, an idea. Slavery had existed on every part of the globe for thousands of years, and somehow these northerners who have only been taking from the south, and profiting off of the same plantations they now mean to demonize. Was absolutely evil. Furthermore Lee felt like his country the one served had left him, and it's people. If the Civil War could have ended without bloodshed Lee would have very much preferred that. Oh and one more thing. How exactly was the US founded in the first place. It's pretty safe to say the British would have felt pretty "betrayed"

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment on the videos content. It’s easier today to look back at Lee’s decision and be critical. Someone would say he was on the wrong side of history. I would agree with that. Slavery is and was an abomination. Many intellectuals in Lee’s time believed it to be so and argued as much. It is very clear that the Civil War was not as much about state rights as it was about the freedom of all humans. I love America. However, if America supported an institution that deprived millions of basic human rights, I I would not support it even if it meant turn my back on the nation I love. LEE had a choice. Let’s not forget that millions of Americans had a choice. He elected to fight for the right to keep millions of people in bondage. That cannot be ignored. Thank you for leaving a comment. I appreciate your feedback. I look forward to hearing your response.

Lee's choice was to honor an oath he took to a country that was preparing to invade his home State, a State that had not committed any act of aggression against the Northern States, or to defend his home and neighbors. My Country, right or wrong? Seems an easy choice.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment and for your viewership. I think it’s clear that the civil war was about slavery and the presentation of that institution. LEE understood this and made a decision to lead an army that was committed to preserving of slavery. He certainly had a choice. And in this instance, he came down on the wrong side of history.

@@letsgoseeit457 You might want to consider the attitude of the Northern troops, who went to war "to preserve the Union". They called the Southerners "rebels", not "slavers". Freeing slaves only became the issue around a year into the conflict, and mainly for political advantage. If the North wanted to free slaves, why didn't they free them in Delaware? Easy enough... it was a Northern State. When you look at history, you can judge what was right and wrong, but you shouldn't judge people's actions without considering that you are doing so with hindsight, and are not influenced by culture and actually living in the time of the events.
