Shaw got a lot of PTSD that he can't forget or resolve. His time on the battlefield watching his commander's head explode like a melon and then his time at the military hospital hearing screaming men beg to not have more of their limbs amputated left a mental scar that just won't heal. It's like a constant intrusive thought that ruins his day, every day whenever he got a moment to himself, that's all he comes back to thinking about. I know lots of guys are like just "get over it" and just don't get it.

You’re definitely going to bring home some ghosts home with you if you’ve actively fought in a combat theater. I’ve got one buddy, to this day and at random times still swears he sees a kid he’d watched die in the Kandahar province in Afghanistan. He says he still sees him. I’ve got another buddy who won’t go anywhere near grocery bags that are just laying in the street or something because they fancied putting IED’s in grocery bags for men to run over or step on. I have my own ghosts as well, talking to anybody who has never been is basically just talking to a wall. “People sleep peacefully in their beds at night because there are rough men who stay awake ready to commit brutal acts against their enemies in order to protect their oh so peaceful sleep”

Only 25 - 26 years old, having just survived the horrors of Antietam, scarred from seeing his men and friends slaughtered and the aftermath that followed. Shaw still volunteered to go back, knowing he'd likely see it all over again, all for the sake of his nation and people (black and white.) I can't imagine having that kind of courage. ===Some Additional Historical Notes=== Frederick Douglass would actually have two of his sons serve in the 54th Massachusetts. Charles Douglass would grow severely ill and unable to participate in combat, while Lewis Douglass would participate in the Battle of Fort Wagner, and survived it and the whole war, passing in 1908, while Charles would pass in 1920. Both were some of the first to sign on. The 54th would survive the Battle of Fort Wagner, Colonel Edward Needles Hallowell taking command after Colonel Shaw's death. Hallowell was previously a Lieutenant under Col. Shaw, and kept his former officer's dream alive. (Cabot Forbes takes several references from Hallowell, so as not to overlap with Shaw.) In 1864, Colonel Hallowell succeeded in getting the men of the 54th, both current and former, full pay. The 54th would serve throughout the rest of the war, including one of the last battles, the Battle of Boykin's Mill. After the war, as with many regiments, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment would be disbanded in 1865, as the restored Union no longer needed a full military deployment. In 2008, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment would be revived as the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment of the US National Guard. They render military honors at ceremonies and funerals, and marched in President Obama's inaugural parade. Joining is considered a high honor, both for duties and history.
