I wrote Bob an email about 20 years ago...I started by saying you don’t know me but I want to thank you for all of your songs as like countless others they mean a great deal to our lives, etc. he just replied back with “you’re welcome...and I know exactly who you are.” Fare thee well American legend

He did know you. I heard Neil say something similar; like how the artist don't own the songs after they write it. He went on to describe seeing a guy blaring "Like a Rolling Stone" in his car and singing out the lyrics. He described that guy as being right there with Bob and capturing the essence of the song.

No one can make my emotions soar like Robert Hunter. He is a giant among the greats of music and poetry. Someday, when the disappointments of the 1960s are long forgotten, humanity will celebrate Robert as one of the giants of music and poetry. While those of us who know and love his songs and poems already have acknowledged his brilliance, eventually the rest of the human race will as well.
