Over in Killarney
Many years ago,
My Mother sang this song to me
In tones so soft and low.
Just a simple little ditty,
In her good old Irish way,
And l'd give the world if she could sing
This song to me this day.
"Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's an Irish lullaby."

When he was on the Dick Cavett show, he mentioned that he had to modulate his voice when he started, because I think he had a baritone voice. They asked him if he was a singer, and he said no. But I guess he was inspired to to some singing from that. When did he stop singing I wonder, I think he might have gone and still sang in the late 60's.

This is just a testament to how far the entertainment industry has declined. This generation can never be replaced. These folks defined an entire genre of music and movies and will be missed.

Sharon - its really spooky you replied today as I was feeling a bit low - not seeing the grandchildren etc. so I put on an old video of a Guardian lecture with Robert Mitchum and Derek Malcolm. It was an old Channel 4 recording and Robert Mitchum showed up in a fantastic white suit and dark glasses with his beautiful wife in the audience. He went on to give the most amazing stories of his life in films, some of which were hilarious, especially his life on the set with Michael Winner and John Wayne. I immediately felt cheered up after watching this amazing actor. I first saw him as a ten year old when my Aunt took me and my sister to see Not As A Stranger with Lee Marvin.at a cinema in Wood Green. I followed his career for many years and at 78 still adore him. So sad that he is no longer here and I believe his beautiful wife has also passed away. Thanks to You Tube I can view his films although I see I have to update my browser to carry on getting You Tube - goodness knows how I do that! Jillian.

That man can never be replaced. Loved him since I was a little girl and saw him in THUNDER ROAD. He wasn't a hillbilly but he sure played one well. My daddy's people are from that area so I'm a good judge of southern voices and behaviors . My grandfather had a traveling moonshine still. He kept moving it to stay one step ahead of the tax man. Mitchum could have passed for one of my cousins...lol

@@bettyjoegentry9280 LOL, that's a great story about your grandfather moving the still. I lived in a small town, close to the country but never knew of anybody owning a still, LOL. And yes, that era of actors, I loved them all and when I see a Robert Mitchum one on, I'll watch it. In fact just bought one from Amazon to watch, didn't cost very much, under $7 including shipping. it's Thompson's Last Run, haven't watched it yet. My favorite of his was Heaven Knows Mr. Allison.
