"He was the only one we didn't get" is a very revealing line. We're led to believe that Riddler figured out that Bruce Wayne was Batman, but that line reveals that he still thinks that Bruce and Batman are two separate people. "He's (Bruce) the only one we (Riddler and Batman) didn't get." Riddler has deluded himself into believing that he and Batman are working together toward a common goal of punishing Gotham's corrupt elites, and he is lamenting to Batman that the bomb that injured Alfred didn't kill Bruce. At the end, Batman realizes that he's been sending the wrong message with "I am vengeance." It's inspiring people to seek their own vengeance, but they lack Batman's sense of morality and refusal to kill. He knows that he has to be more than an embodiment of vengeance. He has to become a hopeful figure to the city.

Just a note, the Batmobile didn’t stall. He revved the engine and accelerated a little bit to goad Cobblepot into a chase. Young Batman wants the chase. He wants to make the Penguin afraid. A older more experienced Batman wouldn’t instigate a chase that could lead to so much damage and risk to others, but young Batman is selfish. He wants his own satisfaction, regardless of the danger it puts others in. This Batman isn’t a hero…not until after his sacrificial baptism at the end of the film is he reborn as a hero.

And all 3 films end with him getting lucky. Also add that Batman famously DOESN'T TALK. Exactly what Pattinson's Bat does, he doesn't talk. Bale went on numerous monologues, explaining his motives to the villains, and chatting with everyone like friends.

No, The Riddler didn't figure out Batman's identity - the scene was laid out in such a way that you (the audience) and Bruce _think_ he has, until it becomes clear that he's only talking about Bruce as 'the one we didn't get'... because he didn't predict that Bruce Wayne wouldn't be at home, because he doesn't know that Bruce Wayne is Batman. He never even considers that Bruce and Bats are one in the same, because in his mind Batman is 'like him', while Bruce is 'one of _them'._

@@ethanlivemere1162 I disagree - the note "See You In Hell" is a reference to "Sins of the Father" - which makes it an odd choice if it _wasn't_ intended to kill Bruce. If it was aimed at Alfred I think it would say something else, something clever and relevant to him. (So long as you assume the note was meant as a clue, at least. I think Riddler'd put something to twig at Alfred for the few moments before the bomb went off, instead of something as vague as "See You In Hell". We get no establishment of Riddler knowing anything about Alfred, so arguing that it was tweaking his nose about something the movie didn't tell us is bad screenwriting... and therefore unlikely.) Is it possible that he knows? Sure, absolutely. There's nothing stating outright that he 100% doesn't know, after all. But I think it would be a strange choice to leave it so vague here, only to bring it up again in a later movie. Also, it's a killer chance for dramatic irony; Riddler knows, we know that he knows, and Bruce doesn't know that he knows - _prime_ sequel bait. Even better than teasing the Joker, imo. I think they would have capitalised on that if they had the opportunity. tldr; Possible, but unlikely - I stand by my interpretation.
@ethanlivemere11625 ай бұрын
@@undeadMonk "See you in hell" was the note addressed to Batman, so it's not a note for a Bruce he's planning to kill regardless of whether he knows. Alfred didn't see the note either. It's not a real thing. The nickname "The Circus" is just from the books written by Le Carre. The Circus was used as a mocking way to refer MI6/SIS by the director of a different intelligence agency based on the SOE in The Looking Glass Wars and was used again in the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy when Smiley became the head of MI6/SIS with the iconic quote "welcome back to the circus". It's referred as the Circus because in Le Carre's books, the hq of MI6/SIS is located at Cambridge Circus street. Though, a lot of other jargons from the books are used irl later on (i.e the cousins refering to the CIA, honey trap refering to a sexual blackmail operator, agent as a someone you turn to your cause etc etc). Le Carre was an intelligence officer during 50s and 60s for both SIS and MI5 but left the service when he was burned as a result of Philby's activities with USSR. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold was written when he was still an IO in Berlin for MI6/SIS.

The point of "I'm vengeance" is that Bruce was realizing what Batman had come to symbolize: terror and violence. Terror and violence inspires more terror and violence. It was touched on in The Dark Knight Trilogy, but this really brings it to the fore: if Batman is the terrifying vigilante who lurks in the night and violently dispatches criminals, all that inspires is people to use the same methods to go after whoever they blame for the problems. Bruce is shown he needs to make Batman stand for something more, to be a light in the dark, instead of just more darkness.

One thing I like the most about this film are the leitmotifs in the score. There's probably more than two, but I always pick up on the way the Riddler gets two or three notes from the Ave Maria, and how Bruce always gets two or three notes from "Something In The Way". An OST composer would obviously be familiar with doing that, and if you're into classical music you'd notice, but it's weird how it just skips past everyone else. Because it's so beautiful. "Showing us how intelligent he is". That's what was missing from so many movies before. Batman is literally the world's greatest detective. And this movie finally shows that in the little details. Pattinson absolutely knocked this out of the park.

While I do enjoy 'dark Riddler', I really enjoy that The Batman focuses on the detective aspect heavily and shows Bats finding his footing as he misses details and makes mistakes. I think Pattinson is a good fit for the role and am curious to see where they take it (as long as it isn't yet another Joker 😓)

So glad to see your reaction to this one !! IMO the most comic accurate adaptation of Batman. That being said, there is a 5 minutes deleted with the "unseen prisoner" that is also very faithful to the reliationship between the two characters... Hope I can see your reaction to this one too !

This always felt to me like a real nod to the original Batman detective comics from the late 30's. Not that it's based on that specifically, as I uderstand, it draws from many different variations on the character throughout the years. It just gives me those vibes I think because The Batman's technology is so scaled down.

The Penguin!! You have to watch
@Gegota827 күн бұрын
this version of Batman leans way more into the detective aspect of the character. I know he did the finger prints on the bullet in the other film but that was the only thing he did, here he's much more detective like. The Dark knight is still my favorite version of Batman, but this was good. I'm going to watch the Penguin series, which Colin Farrell also plays. I'm sure it's fantastic.

As for the Nolan films, he got a lot of his story elements from the classic Batman The Animated Series. And if you are a Bat fan, you Need to throw that series on your schedule.

Hi, so I subscribed after watching you nerd out for the first 3 minutes haha. Great commentary! This is a very different Batman film than anything that was done before. Batman has always been in the action genre, this was more of a thriller, and I think some general audiences were thrown off by that. For me, this is perhaps more Batman than any of the other films. This leans into the detective side of the character, which is often glossed over. The other thing is that this is highly character-driven. This Selena Kyle is the greatest love interest Batman has had since Andrea Beaumont. The city of Gotham is also perfectly captured here, with the rain, the gothic architecture, and the general atmosphere. It all works together to create a truly unique texture. This was a fantastic movie, and I can't wait to see the 2nd one!

Have you watched the original Batman Movie with Jack Nicholson as the Joker? It's a fantastic Classic with Michael Keaton as Batman. Batman Returns is the follow up. You should watch both of those if you haven't already!

You should definitely react to the penguin series now, it’s phenomenal. Edit: but yeah I think this is my second favorite live action Batman movie, the dark knight will always be the best imo. But this is probably the most comic accurate Batman, at least in terms of tone the character and everything else. It’s absolutely amazing, and I think that this is as close as we can get to the comics in a live action performance in my opinion.

That movie is based on the Year 2 comics arc, telling about the beginning of Bruce Wayne's journey as the Batman, and it really captured an aspect that was most neglected in all past Batman movies: Batman as a detective. I freaking loved it. Not bad for a glittery vampire. 😁
@TheJokerAkaCirque5 ай бұрын
why do people confidently spread misinformation? This movie is about a Batman who is in his second year, and it adapts ideas from many comic arcs, but there is literally nothing of the actual comic arc "Year 2" in this movie. And good thing too, Year 2 is an absolute dogshit arc whose only positive aspect is that it was reworked into the fantastic Mask of the Phantasm.

My favorite use of Ave Maria in film is in Disney’s Fantasia. It immediately follows the “demon” scene (set to Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain). I once woke up in the middle of that scene, and was surprisingly moved by the transition to Ave Maria, which is masterfully done. The choral performance of Ave Maria itself is quietly majestic and spiritual. If you’ve never seen it, you should.

In the beginning, in his first appearance, the guy he saves on the train platform is afraid of him even after being saved from the gang, but at the end, the girl on the stretch not only is not afraid but holds on to him for confort and safety.
