Gambian-born Juldeh Camara is playing the bowed West African fiddle called a Nyanyero in his native Fuli language that's also called a Riti in the Wolof tongue. He's a virtuoso player and has been on 21 albums and counting, collaborating with European, African and other artists. His fiddle is of simple design but a unique instrument in that it has a skin-covered gourd body and its one or two strings are made of bundled horsehair and played with an actual small hunting-type bow with bowstring. It's almost a complete reversal of the western concept but sounds amazing in the hands of a master.

Matter of preference. The song itself is intended to be very atmospheric. The voice effect adds to that.
