So many people turn to Jude 9 and say Satan is a cosmic angel which desired Moses’s body. Jude 1:9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” What people don’t realize is that Jude is not speaking about the devil. He was actually referring to Jewish folklore and legends which are familiar to his audience to Jews. It’s like telling a story about Jack and the Beanstalk to my mom’s generation to illustrate a point. Now what is the point? This is written before Jude 9. Jude 1:4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. This after Jude 9. Jude 1:10 Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct-as irrational animals do-will destroy them. Jude is referring to people are slanderers and take the holy things of God for granted. They have no respect for things which are sanctified. Hence there is that illustration about slandering celestial beings. Jude 1:8 In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings. Who are they? Jude 1:18-19 They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. So these are people who were trying to bring people who have entered into the new covenant back to the old. It could refer to people like the following: 1 Timothy 1:20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. Now, with regards the burial of Moses here is a Jewish legend about the burial of his body. According to ancient Jewish legends - which should be regarded only as legends - the death of Moses was tender and full of God’s compassion. “In the meanwhile, Moses’ time was at an end. A voice from heaven resounded, saying: ‘Why, Moses, dost thou strive in vain? Thy last second is at hand.’ Moses instantly stood up for prayer, and said: ‘Lord of the world! Be mindful of the day on which Thou didst reveal Thyself to me in the bush of thorns, and be mindful also of the day when I ascended into heaven and during forty days partook of neither food nor drink. When Moses beheld the Holy One, blessed be His Name, he fell upon his face and said: ‘Lord of the world! In love didst Thou create the world, and in love Thou guidest it. Treat me also with love, and deliver me not into the hands of the Angel of Death.’ A heavenly voice sounded and said: ‘Moses, be not afraid. “Thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward.”’” “With God descended from heaven three angels, Michael, Gabriel, and Zagzagel. Gabriel arranged Moses’ couch, Michael spread upon it a purple garment, and Zagzagel laid down a woolen pillow. God stationed Himself over Moses’ head, Michael to his right, Gabriel to his left, and Zagzagel at his feet, whereupon God addressed Moses: ‘Cross thy feet,’ and Moses did so. He then said, ‘Fold thy hands and lay them upon thy breast,’ and Moses did so. Then God said, ‘Close thine eyes,’ and Moses did so. Then God spake to Moses’ soul: ‘My daughter, one hundred and twenty years had I decreed that thou shouldst dwell in this righteous man’s body, but hesitate not now to leave it, for thy time has run….I Myself shall take thee to the highest heavens and let thee dwell under the Throne of My Glory’…. When Moses heard these words, he permitted his soul to leave him, saying to her: ‘Return to thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.’ God thereupon took Moses’ soul by kissing him on the mouth.” (Ginzberg, Legends of the Jews) Now looking at this story, it seems that Moses has difficulty facing his death and the certainty of where he would end up after his death. Jude’s reference to the devil here if read together with this story probably is referring to Moses’s struggle with his passing. The devil in Hebrew means slanderer. This would fit well with the story that God had purposed that Moses would have a comfortable death. Hence Moses’s fear of the angel of death would stand against the character of God who wanted to give him a comfortable death. Hence, the term “Devil.” It’s important for us to note stories like the above are not biblical accounts but folklore and fairy tales. They cannot be used to substantiate the presence of a demonic being. Hope that helps.

The temptation of Jesus was about whether Jesus would chose to live under the Law or the new covenant. The “devil” there is his personal struggle whether to adopt the Jewish ways or his Father’s way. Turning stone into bread is a temptation to use the Law to please God. The temple is where you offer sacrifices according to the Law. The mountain Satan took Jesus to was Jerusalem. It was an offering to make him the high priest. The king of the Jewish world. There is a very interesting documentary about a group of priests who go to the same desert to fast and be tempted by the devil. It’s a program hosted by Morgan Freeman. In search of God. Season 3.
