The mailman is still alive. Hank Garrett was a former wrestler, body builder, martial artist and was a regular on the sitcom "Car 54 Where Are You?" he's 93 years old. and the last surviving cast member from the show.

He recreated the same scene in a 90’s movie with Patrick Stewart called safe house. When i saw him as the mailman in safe house I immediately thought” no way!”lol Patrick plays an ex CIA agent being hunted.

I think with older movies you definitely need to watch most, if not all, of the movie before you can hope to get all the details on what's going on. I focus on the characters, how they act and how they relate to each other. That way when more details are provided, it all makes sense. If you don't pay attention to them then when you get the details you might not remember important aspects of how it fits together. By the way, "Langley" is movie shorthand for the CIA. So any mention of Langley means the CIA is involved one way or another. So yeah, spies.

A few, admittedly subtle things I think you missed. Firstly, Janice, the Asian woman at the "lit Society", wasn't just a co-worker, the HINT is that they actually had a relationship, either in the recent past or possibly still an occasional thing. That's why he was, as the saying goes, "familiar" with her physically. Then Kathy, the woman whom he kidnaps. Yes, she had a whole other dude waiting for her in Vermont, but it's suggested, albeit quite subtly, in their phone conversation that he's probably a little more into her than she was into him. The conversations she has with Condor suggests that, whatever the quality of her photo art, she seems to avoid people. The fact that he has some CLOTHES there doesn't mean they were living together, only that he had stayed overnight enough times to make keeping some clothes at her place a practical thing. She wasn't wholly serious about their relationship though and that is always the sense I've had from their phone conversation. He feels immediately like this is the big brush-off that he's suspected was coming and she has to really SELL him on the idea that there was actually a legit reason for standing him up. She and Condor seem to have slept together only because, for different reasons, they're both very frightened and lonely people... and it was the '70's and it was popular to depict the tearing down to some extent of social/sexual standards as old-fashioned. Other points: You're not familiar with computers prior to the era of the PC. Understandable. But that's what Janice's job there seems to have been is to handle their computer, and the little round things piled up on top of it were programs and data saved on magnetic tape reels. The thing that he, himself was fixing was a photocopier, and it was another demonstration of the depth of his reading. He had READ how they work and/or how to fix them and was able to do that. He knows so much trivia and does many things - such as being able to get into the phone company switching rooms and understand how to handle the equipment - not because he's specifically been trained or taught any of it, but simply because "He Reads Everything." That ability to retain so much information that he reads, to correlate seemingly unrelated facts, and to then pass along theories and ideas to the CIA at Langley, is why ALL of them are there at the Lit Society. The "Historical Literature Society" is just a front for a small group of CIA people whose job is just to ACCUMULATE information of all kinds from all over the world, not just strictly military and "spy" stuff.

anamorphics: I just did some sleuthing, and what I found states that anamorphic lenses were invented for tank periscopes in WW1. The Hypergonar lens was developed by Chretien in 1927 for photography and films. It didn't go into widespread use until 20th Century Fox bought the rights to the CinemaScope process in 1952.

Excellent summary of what makes many 70s movies great. Figuring out what was going on was why we paid to go to a theatre and watch a movie! If you just wanted to watch a story, with characters you already knew... with maybe one semi-famous guest actor thrown in every week, you stayed home and watched TV.

Since you watched one movie made from a book (Six Days of the Condor) that I enjoyed, another one I suggest is The Eiger Sanction. Starring and directed by Clint Eastwood. It features the most different style of music I've ever heard from John Williams.

Not part of a series. When I was between about 12 and 15 my parents used to let me stay up late on Fridays and Saturdays after they went to bed and watch late night t.v. on our old B&W set- I saw this when I was about 12 and it instantly became one of my favorite films. I can recommend 3 more in the spy thriller genre, DAY OF THE JACKAL (1973) ( the original , not the late remake with Bruce Willis), THE FOURTH PROTOCOL (1987), and THE AMATEUR (1981) - also a favorite of mine is THE EAGLE HAS LANDED (1976) which is a WW2 movie/spy thriller mashup. Loved the reaction - thanks ! : )

The movie would make more sense to you if you let it play out instead of interrupting frequently and with stretches longer than the movie scenes. Was excited to see that some was reacting to this movie, but sheesh. You ruined it for yourself.

You may be logical, but you seem to know very little about the world at large (other than lens). Everyone knows that the CIA is based in Langley, and is often called “the company.” It was obvious after the first 5 minutes that the society was a front for a spy operation and that crossing the names off the list foreshadowed a hit. The lead actors were major stars of the period. Vehicles in those days had either an alternator or a generator. The Asian woman was obviously a very good friend of Condor (it’s illogical to jump to pejorative conclusions before you have the facts). You also seemed to miss that Kathy didn’t really like her boyfriend very much, and you can’t tell the difference between a policeman and a mailman. Condor knows about telephone switching systems because he reads (his job), and he knew about the “ice” bullets because he read it in an old Dick Tracy comic strip (so did I, although I doubt that would really work). We never really know whether Higgins was part of the rogue network or not, so Condor was right not to trust him. As for the body in Kathy’s apartment, perhaps they disposed of it---the CIA wouldn’t want it found anyway. Do you really expect movies to show you every trivial detail? They rarely do. You are right about one thing. Young audiences today, fed on mountain of comic-book movies, have no understanding of suspense (the early sequence) or character building (the scenes between the leads) and think that everything that isn’t continuous action is “slow.”

I feel the same way, bud. I started watching Zodiac and the first scene showed these kids getting killed but it didnt show who did it or say the name of the guy who killed them or why he killed them, and so I turned it off immediately. I am not going to play guessing games with a,movie. Saving Private Ryan showed some kind of army people landing on a beach and getting shot at. But it didnt say who the guys on the beach were or who was shooting at them or why or if the people shooting at them were army people or what. So after 2 or 3 minutes, i turned THAT off, too. Movies that try to hide stuff are stupid.
