You had a mother who allowed her child to watch a television program about a sex change surgery? That could almost have been grounds for a visit from a social services caseworker in that time. As that episode of "Medical Center" was in 1975, that controversial subject was hardly fit subject matter for a child. Even many adults shied away from discussion of such matters in what used to be called "polite company."

@@gymnastix In my memory, MASH and other 70s shows were strong on 'issues'. (Stronger than modern audiences can recall). MASH did gay, gender, race, addiction, and had Klinger making crossdressing fun to see as he took dresses so seriously. Dr Kildare also did issues. Med Centre did lots on race, abortion, fertility, ageism..Trans is one topic amongst many. US tv showed leadership on changing society. Med Centre even had sociologists employed to study impact of tv violence on viewers for one episode (TV bosses wanted to disprove the link to crime and free up censorship)

I too saw this when it first aired and, as an adolescent struggling with gender dysphoria, shows like this and Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show, Phil Donahue etc. were really a lifeline of help. Dramatic narratives like this can never be everything for everyone but I think, again for the time, they did a pretty good job-- even handed and empathetic to the transsexual and her family and friends. I thought Robert Reed was quite good and I believe he received an Emmy nomination. Thanks for posting this!

I saw the two-part episode back in 1975 when I was high school. After the Brady Bunch was canceled, Robert Reed took parts that would give him as much distance as possible from Mike Brady. I remember him playing a sleazy character in a television movie about Dorothy Stratten. Reed was a classically trained actor who had done Broadway, before signing a contract with Paramount. Because of the contract, he was cast in the Brady Bunch, something he neither wanted or sought. He had a love-hate relationship with Mike Brady. As much as he hated the role and storylines in the series, he gained a sort of recognition as one of the country best loved television fathers. IIRC, Gary Frank played the son of Reed and Salome Jens in the two-part episode. I think Jens was terrific as the very confused wife, but the ending she talks about her new job is a bit much IIRC II Chad Everett and Salome Jens worked together in a television movie, In the Glitter Palace. He played an attorney defending the lesbian lover of his ex-girlfriend. She played a closeted lesbian judge

I recall talking about this episode with my grandfather, who was a very macho guy. We used to enjoy watching boxing together. Neither one of us understood this, but I remember a disconnect between the two of us on this none-the-less. I felt that Robert Reed, my favorite TV dad as a kid, having balls of stone to take on this type of role so soon after the "Brady Bunch". He wasn't having any of it and simply related how much he despised two gay men he knew in the service. We all live and learn and grow as people. I loved my grandfather, but he had some serious growing up to do in accepting people... as I did as I grew older. It's a better world for gay, lesbian and transgender people now and we're all better for it. It takes a long time to learn, grow and change... I can't imagine the courage it took for Robert Reed, a privately gay man, to take on this role. Although LGBT people all have different facets to their sexuality, I think Mr. Reed was trying to do what he could as an actor to reach out and give humanity and a real human face to transgender people, even though he was not one of them. Robert Reed was a man of courage.

Everybody knows stuff but people think it's a big secret. except for people who refuse to see what's right in front of them. He preferred all his life 19 year old blonde blue eyed males he paid them $200 to keep quiet. that's kind of pervert but it goes on so much I guess some people think it's normal. if he had any balls he would have been more truthful and forgo the acting work. he chose money and career / over truth so what it killed him trying to hold it in.
@rogerwilco43978 жыл бұрын
deadmanswife1 I think it would have been career suicide for Mr. Reed to publicly acknowledge his homosexuality back in the 1960's. He was a victim of the times in which he lived. Had society been more accepting of him he might not have had to exist in the closet. Who knows, maybe he'd be alive today. All I can say is that the cast members of "Brady Bunch" said that, while he could be difficult as an actor, he fiercely protected the kids on the show and many of them looked upon him as a second father.

Jesus never said anything in the Gospels , and if you are a Christian, this is who Christians follow. Do you eat pork, shellfish, have any tatoos, piercings, have your haircut, work on the Sabbath, premarital sex, masturbation, if you are a woman do you wear pants. Do you believe that women are property ? Do you believe that if a child disobeys his or her parents that they deserve death? Do you follow all of these ? @gaylesollenberger60919 жыл бұрын
Richard Leon You are absolutely correct. Jesus did say "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone." No one is judging. Only the Great Creator, God, has that right. But I don't know ANY version of the Bible where God does not condemn homosexual behavior. What version of the Bible are you reading from?
@richardleon68489 жыл бұрын
I was talking about the fact that Jesus never said anything in the Gospels. Do you eat shellfish, pork, have tatoos, piercings, premarital sex,work on the Sabbath, etc? Thee are in the Bible as things not to do as well as others.
@gaylesollenberger60919 жыл бұрын
Richard Leon First of all, we don't know everything that Jesus said but we do know, that he would have followed His Father's commands and condemned the sin but would have counseled the sinner to "sin no more." And no, I do not have tattoos or piercings. I do not eat pork or shellfish (although my husband does). God has good reasons for the laws He gives and James reminds us "with God is no variation or shadow of turning." (James 1:17) Rather than assume that an Old Testament law is done away with, we should trust that our God knows what is good for us and put it into practice in our lives, unless it has been specifically set aside in the New Testament. It is still valid today.
@gaylesollenberger60919 жыл бұрын
I don't check this stuff everyday. I have a life. And I don't remember calling anybody any names either. But I forgive you name callers for your lack of language skills. Are you deliberately being obtuse? I know exactly what the Bible says, how God feels about sexual lifestyles that are not part of his plan for us. I genuinely felt sorry for Robert Reed. But he was wrong in his choices. And, as far as what Jesus said, what do you think he meant when he said that he didn't come to judge but to fulfill His Father's laws. He would have followed His own command. Love the sinner, hate the sin. Following God's commands doesn't make me a bigot. But it makes your beliefs questionable in God's eyes.

Gayle Sollenberger "Love the sinner, hate the sin" What a telling little pat phrase there, completely disingenuous in itself and utter hypocrisy. Please feel free to indicate- book and verse- from whence you quote that meme.... "But he was wrong in his choices" How funny that you've anointed yourself a judge of sin, even though as a sinner, that normally disqualifies you from judging as much.... And yes, you- one who knows exactly what the Bible says- do indeed have a life, which only requires that you hate your own sin.... Bigot much?

+Gayle Sollenberger Some people don't follow your religion. Some people simply don't care about your threats or your imagination. Get over it and yourself.

What threats? I prefer to air on the side of what my Bible says. We will both find out when Christmas returns to straighten out this chaotic mess of a world.

+Gayle Sollenberger Gayle you need to mind your business. Nobody cares about you Bible thumping opinions. MIND YOUR DAMN BUSINESS AND WORRY ABOUT WHAT'S IN YOUR CLOSET AND YOUR FAMILY. Always people like you saying this shit and you've done some shit in your life. AGAIN NOBODY CARES WHAT YOU THINK AND KEEP YOUR DAMN PRAYERS TO YOURSELF.

Embarrassing, considering he played a straight guy. Everyone knew the truth but should have kept up his man image 🥹
