Robert Smith used KMS spray gel. It gives a far superior result to hair spray (source - was a goth during the late 80's).

@@Jager1984 most of the 80’s. I read an interview with him talking about how he use “kms gel spray, the one with the white hexagons on it”. I presume he never stopped because it is significantly easier to work with than hair spray, which makes your hair stiff. I did my hair like his using KMS for years and was able to get the same textures - which changes based on using a crimping iron, hair dryer, applying it wet, or just natural dry (and amount of teasing and back combing).

Ha! I love it. Back in the day we used to just hang our head down and rat the shit out of it. Hit it with a ton of Rave 4 hairspray and blow dry it til it was stiff enough to stick up! They have much better products these days!

Sounds like cool times man I just backcomb a lot hang my head upside down backcomb some more and fluff it out then keep my head upside down and spray a lot of hairspray... I always smell like hairspray even when my hair isnt up

back combing or teasing is when you take the comb to the hair the opposite direction that it grows in creating volume :) and you probably will! just need comb,hairspray,etc.
