Amazing research has gone into this, well done. Surely Trujillo himself is losing track of the sheer number of instruments at this point? On the opposite end of the spectrum I do appreciate when rich and highly celebrated artists still decide to stick to one or very few instruments as Keith Williams described in one of his videos - you form more of a bond with the instrument. Each to their own though, and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.

Once again a terrific video. Lots of time invested in doing all the research I'm sure. I've owned two Zon Sonus's. Their claim to fame (like Modulus, Status) is that the necks are all composite/graphite. So I was surprised when Zon came out with the RT signature but with a wooden neck. Both versions were like that (there was the RT made in California and then the Korean import version). Up until that point all of Joe Zon's basses had the composite necks, so it appears that to accommodate Rob, he produced a Sonus with a wooden neck.

It misses the point of Zon basses in a way..

Awesome work as usual Alfie!!! Still got me hooked (and becoming quite the gear nerd myself). I have noticed on Robs Warwick's that he does not have the two piece Warwick bridge on his basses, opting for more of a Leo Quan Bad Ass/Hipshot Kick Ass style. As an up and coming gear snob (just kidding, it dosent matter what you play, all that matters is that you play) I do find this interesting. And, as is now becoming customary I've gotta push for that dUg Pinnick gear review... One thing I do remember reading about dUg and his gear... when he signed with Schector he had his original Baron fitted with a very specific P pickup made by Seymore Duncan. Again, the gear nerd in me finds it interesting that the godfather of modern rock and metal tone is not running EMG's.
@WhichBass2 жыл бұрын
Haha glad you enjoyed the video Scott! That's great to hear. That's really interesting about dUg, you're right about the EMG thing. Everyone leans that way so it's really fascinating to see someone pull away from that. I'll see what I can do! I'm looking for someone new now, good call!

I (personally) think Metallica has gone too far when it comes to experimenting with different gear. The best sounds they've recorded were in a time when the budget was tight and the high-end pieces of gear were more few and far between. I'd prefer if they took the "AC/DC-approach" instead, setting up some tried-and-true workhorse pieces of gear (Marshall stacks, SVTs, vintage explorers, Vs, Les Pauls, Fender and Rick basses)in a circle and just hammered away trough the songs live and just putting the vocals, solos, overdubs, etc on top afterwards. This'd get a rawer, more energetic and aggressive sound and more live-performances out of the guys. They still got it, but they've gotten too lazy (or comfortable) to do stuff properly
@ileutur68632 жыл бұрын
Nah the problem is that they haven't bothered to replicate the tones of their albums even though they have the means to. Their modern sound has much less gain and much more clarity, which sounds like a good thing but it leads to songs sounding weaker than they should
@wilhelmtheconquerer62142 жыл бұрын
@@ileutur6863 it's not about the sound, it's about the energy and the tone chasing that comes with too many options. If you have ONE great guitar and amp then you'll make sure to get the most out of that, rather than when you have next to unlimited resources, that's when you start second guessing yourself
@WhichBass2 жыл бұрын
I'd be interested in seeing how that approach works for them that would be very cool.
@wilhelmtheconquerer62142 жыл бұрын
@@WhichBass Bob Rock used this approach on The Black Album, which was the first time it wasn't just James and Lars. Likewise, the first four albums were all recorded on one or two guitars each. The rawer sound of the 80's paired with the groove and energy of The Black Album is what they need to show that they still got it

@@WhichBass Well maybe, but there are so many documented videos about him up there on the interwebs...so do a run down on Muzz Skillings. Not so much about him up on the info highway. Bass player to fireman in NYC. That would be most excellent. I'd buy a Which Bass Tee shirt and wear it proud if you did.
