Robert W. Service Interview, Monaco, 1958

I just found Robert W. Service even though I had heard the Cremation of Sam McGee and Dan McGrew years ago. As I have listen to more and more his works, I have become a real fan, as his works tell of a rugged life in the wilderness and frontier.

The interviewer is Pierre Berton. He was born in Whitehorse, Canada and would hide in the bushes with his brother and stare at the tourists that came to see Robert Service's old cabin. What a strange event to interview the man years later on the other side of the world!

Peirce Berton has written some interesting books about Canada: Klondike, The National Dream. The Last Spike. I enjoyed all of them.

.30 - He must be out of his mind to suggest he can see Corsica on a clear day since it is about 288 kms. distance from Monaco. Assuming he is about 100 meters above sea level the distance to the horizon would be about 36 km. So, everything less than 2916 meters high would be obscured by the horizon. Corsica's highest peak is Monte Cinto, @ 2,706 meters. If the earth is a ball with a radius of 3959 meters he is clearly seeing Sam Mcgee burning and not Corsica.

I confirm you we can distinguish the shape of the peak of Corsican Mount Cinto from Monaco by clear sky mostly in winter. Come to visit Monaco to check it ;)
