"Folk singer Ewan MacColl wrote this in 1957 for his lover, Peggy Seeger. She was in a play and phoned him for suggestions on a song for a romantic scene. MacColl wrote this on the spot in less than an hour, playing it over the phone for his wife to use in her play."

One of the greatest performances ever, thank goodness it was recorded for all to see "until the end of time". Makes this 61yr old rock n roller tear up everytime it plays on my playlist. She is so beautiful as she sings it also...just amazing. She is 87 now and i hope still feeling those feelings that she obviously felt while performing here.

That is a truly beautiful song from Roberta Flack. She has an incredible voice and has many other beautiful songs like "Killing Me Softly," and she also had songs with James Ingram. My wife and I will soon be married for 50 years, and we have been blessed to have known this type of love, although there have been hardships like the loss of our oldest daughter to cancer. We had each other and our love to unite us through those very dark, difficult times. Love is the key to everything. Without love, there is nothing worthwhile. I love your beautiful reaction to this classic love song.

The irony is that her version of this beautiful love song is anything BUT easy to listen to because of the emotional response it invokes inside of the listener. It is one of the most pure, beautiful declarations of love ever produced in popular music. What can you say? Pure artistry and expression. Even though we have many progressions in society like awareness of mental health and movements for equality, people are afraid to be vulnerable like this anymore. Everything now is about posturing and performing. True vulnerability scares many people.

The first time ever I heard this song, I felt the earth move and shift, making way for a new favorite love song. And how fortunate that it be sung by North Carolina's own Roberta Flack! Her hometown college, Black Mountain College, produced some of the greatest artists, dancers, architects and thinkers as well. My own now departed folks would spend every summer or autumn. A special world you would love. Thanks for sharing this world treasure.

I saw her at the Montreal Jazz Festival several years ago. She sang songs from her catalog but at the end of the show she said we are at a jazz festival and to me jazz is everybody taking a turn. She introduced each band member, each one a virtuoso and she introduced her keyboardist as her musical director and arranger. He was surrounded by keyboards and instead of taking a keyboard solo he started scat singing. His voice went to the low registers and he arched his back looking straight up and hit incredibly high notes. Roberta was beautiful and gracious, makes me emotional just recalling that show.

Ewan MacColl wrote "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for Peggy Seeger, whom he was in love with. He claimed to have hated every version of it except Seeger's, including this one. He called them his "chamber of horrors." Apparently, the song was so personal to him that he couldn't stand anyone but Seeger to sing it. It was too bad that he couldn't enjoy it, because it's one of the most romantic songs ever written, and Roberta Flack's interpretation is one of the all-time great vocal performances. One thing I love about this performance is how restrained it is. It's so soft and gentle, just like the emotion it conveys. Many of today's singers could learn something from listening to her. In my opinion, too many of today's singers use over-the-top histrionics. Often a whisper is better than a shout.

Incredible Vocal Stylist of Robert Flack saturated our airwaves then. She makes my breath slow down and it’s the anticipation of her next line that creates such satisfaction , gorgeous warmth . There will always be artists, & romantics ,whether the media pays attention, but I love watching younger people discovering humanity music that came before their time. Just as the artists of the times before this ,we learn that there is more to us than the current situation. Our yearning has always been with us . Humans repeat - the styles change ,but at our core we are emotional beings. Music gives us a language that connects and expresses our complexity ☮️

An interesting story: In 1972 this song won the Grammy for Song of the Year. It beat out another huge hit - "American Pie" by Don Maclean. Then in 1973, Maclean was nominated for Song of the Year for "Vincent." Roberta Flack won again, this time for "Killing Me Softly," which was about the songwriter's reaction to Maclean at one of his concerts. Oh, and the Maclean song that the songwriter reacted to was "Empty Chairs" a beautiful heartbreak of a song about a breakup. So.... 4 more songs I'd love to see you react to.

Written by Ewan MacColl, a British folk singer-songwriter and had been a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain. He is still very popular and influential artist.
