This song was a slow-dancers dream in the 1970's, when I was in my 20's. A young man could get into a lot of trouble dancing to Roberta's songs. I agree that "Killing Me Softly" would be a good choice to look at next.

The emotion in Roberta's voice is so apparent in this song and "killing me softly", what can you say?? It's o VERY true, Roberta was, in my opinion, the closest angelic voice to Karen Carpenter, hypnotic and an instant mood maker.

Ms Flack said that Clint Eastwood asked to use this song in his movie 'Play Misty for Me'. She thought it would be to long and said she would be glad to shorten it for him. He said no, he wanted all 5 minutes and 22 seconds of it in his movie. The radio cut it down to 4 minutes 15 seconds.

Love her unhurried vocal as she wrings the emotion out of every poetic word. I actually held my breath to make sure I heard the strings rise up behind her magnificent once. Like I said on another thread, I only ever saw my dad tear up twice: when he listened to this song or talked about this song. Flack’s voice spoke to the soul of a very damaged man, and hearing it again gives me a good memory of him. Good choice, heartfelt reaction. 🎯

It gained a more profound meaning to me, when I gave birth to my first born,& the first hour of her life.The marriage didn't last,& my first born died in a freak accident at 16.5years old, but this song always brings back the Joy of meeting her,& that Joy IS Eternal!

Wow, the link to your reaction here that popped up 10pm last night kept me glued until 2am watching just about all your reviews. Loved them! Back to Roberta, do listen to her version of the Janis Ian song Jesse that was apparently written about a Vietnam vet that didn't come home. Then, if you haven't come across Janis Ian before, I just know you'll love At Seventeen... a real heartbreaker. Her own rendition of Jesse also amazing.

This song was written in 1957 by British songwriter and activist Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, with whom he was having an affair at the time (and later married). It is NOTHING like the original and Ewan hated EVERY cover of it, including this one. Peggy sang it at the Cambridge Folk Festival the other year and it was beautiful. So is Roberta's version but in a different way.

Killing Me Softly also won the Grammy. It's about Don McLean and American Pie
@Jeff_Lichtman4 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's about a performance by Don McLean of his song Vincent.
@Marco-ns7ih Жыл бұрын
Inspiration for Killing me softly was Don McLean's song Empty Chairs. The artist who was inspired and (co-)wrote the lyrics wasn't Roberta Flack but Lori Lieberman who also sang the original version one year before Roberta Flack's cover.

Roberta Flack. One of her great songs was "Killing Me Softly" I think you would like it.
@Jeff_Lichtman4 жыл бұрын
Folksinger Ewan McColl wrote this song for Peggy Seeger, whom he was in love with. The odd thing is that McColl hated every recorded version of the song, even this one. He called it his "chamber of horrors." I've heard McColl's version of it, and it isn't even half as good as Roberta Flack's, which I think is one of the great romantic song performances of all time. Other songs by Roberta Flack include Killing Me Softly with His Song, Feel Like Makin' Love, Where Is the Love, and The Closer I Get to You (the last two are duets with DOnny Hathaway).
@11nytram114 жыл бұрын
Depends on taste. MacColl/Seeger's version has a softer emotional feel while Flack's version is dramatic to an almost operatic degree.

I like your funny comment. Of course it isn't about her cat but it is a lot better than the fairy tale about her newborn child. Many people believe that fairy tale, they even believe that Roberta Flack is the writer and original artist which she isn't.

Where have u been living mate, in a cave? One of the best artists ever discovered Roberta Flack. I suppose if she had killed herself with a drug overdose the whole world would put her on a pedastool and build bronze statues to honour her. Get a radio mate and listen to it, chuck the tv in the dustbin yourcmising so much music good for the soul in life.
