I was so blessed to have a breeder that went above and beyond in raising my dog's litter. She did a lot I'd stimulation, obstacle courses, had children come over and play with them and much more. This puppy came out bomb proof. He has the best temperament that I've seen in a Belgian. I wasn't planning on getting a puppy, but it was meant to be. I've looked for this puppy fo 30 years and finally have him!

My beloved boxer Riley’s littermate was our neighbor’s dog and their bond was AMAZINGGGG, they were sooo tight. They were best friends, and he absolutely knew that was his sister. I’m very glad they weren’t in the same house together so he was able to bond with us and his sister was able to bond with her family. She unfortunately passed away a few years before him, and boy... he was so sad for a while after she passed. It’s like he knew.

So true. I got my first German Shepherd female when I was 18. Before the internet. As you did back then, I replied to a card in a pet shop advertising pups. I got to see mom and dad and over ten pups running about the house causing chaos. Worst estate in the area - but the place was clean and the dogs well cared for and happy. No papers - but did not expect any for the price. I fell in love with Chewie and took her home she was 6 weeks old. She developed no behavior issues - other than hard to train - she was the best dog I ever owned. Here is the rub - when I took her to the vet for a check-up and jabs. The vet got really spooked, he kept going on about her fur not being right and something else. He insisted I take her back. I told him how I got her and did not care if she was pedigree. I wasn't taking her back. The vet had a word with my partner - turns out he suspected she was part wolf. She turned into a wonderful dog - sweet - bold and confident. But this story could have ended so differently. She was my first dog and having now had a number - I can see a difference. Little things - like when a stranger came to the door, she would flick an ear - but not bother with them. If a friend came - she would bark and go and greet them at the door.

A great and unbiased podcast Robert. The problem is people don't seek professional help when it is needed. It seems everyone knows everything when it comes to dogs. People seek advice to people who are related to dogs but these people don't have a clue about training. Keep posting videos like this at least it will help people who are watching it.

I have 2 rescued puppies that were left in front of my shop....They are now in the transition of having their own space because one loves to bully the other. They cry a lot when separated, but they settle down. :) THey are now enjoying their own beds and fenced areas and playing together from time to time. Great to build more confidence on the bullied puppy.

He has soooo many issues, I swear he is bipolar, one moment he is submissive showing his belly and playing all goofy the next he is growling if I get close to him, Reactive to other animals, resource guarding with food, the list is long

This podcast is spot on, I teach puppy school and the most difficult puppies I have ever worked with were litter mates and a puppy that stayed with the breeder until 16 weeks. I'm picking up my Belgian Tervuren puppy in May at 8 weeks on the dot.

I've had a few dogs in my lifetime. A golden retriever and 2 labradors. All 3 have destroyed things even while we were home. My old black lab that I still have ate my couch while I was upstairs taking a shower. And I mean ripped it to pieces. He ate 6 channel changers, 2 pair of glasses, Shoes, sneakers socks too many to even count. Last year I got a Walker coonhound puppy 4 months old. Only dog I have ever raised that has only destroyed the toys that I give him. Hes 14 months now and I couldn't ask for a better dog. Roberts video and advise helped a lot.

Good advice. With livestock guardian breeds that will be working dogs, they should stay with mom until at least 12 weeks old. Longer lets them learn how to behave with livestock. Littermate syndrome is very often a serious problem in working LGDs. Responsible LGD breeders will not sell two or more puppies to the same person, unless the dogs will be working farms in different places and be separated right away.

I always joke that dogs and kids are pretty much the same, but you get in more trouble for putting your kids in the crate lol But there really is alot of carry over. I know what I learned as far as being consistent, assertive without being aggressive, clearly communicating what you want and setting boundaries and rewards/consequences when those things are met or not, etc. I had alot of practice doing that with my rottie for a few years before we had our first child and I have no doubt that I learned many things about taking care of, communicating with a dependent who can't really understand your language, etc that helped me as a parent.

I used to soak clean socks in water and tie them in a knot and freeze them. My puppy loved chewing on them when teething.

My exception to the 8 weeks would actually be ... Livestock Guardian Dogs. I have had one at 8 weeks and one at 5 months, and actually, I much preferred receiving the pup at 5 months. Adjusting to the house was a little trickier, but he had a much larger set of skills to protect our farm with at that point, and once he settled in, he was a pro beyond anything the 8 week old had! I would also be against littermates even with LGDs. If you're not bonded to your LGDs as well as the Livestock, some are liable to see you as the threat! That said we have a smaller homestead, so being perfectly good house dogs is just as important as LGD duties

It is so important not to 'cookie-cutter' your dog. Some dogs (like people) are more suited to some things than others: water, social interaction, vigorous exercise, receptivity to strangers, cold temperatures, off leash activity, etc. As Robert astutely said, properly assess *yourself* as to what kind of dog is best for you. Then proceed with *reasonable expectations* of your dog. Sometimes things we see online and on TV create unreasonable expectations that neither us nor our dogs are able to do 😉

Sherman is a high drive gsd but they can be reactive so I have exposed him to all kinds of stimuli and he does well when storms, fire trucks, police sirens, fourth of july. I made them fun but my behavior and reactions were key. He learned from my behavior

Sherman had 8 litter mates fortunately but the dame quit nursing after a couple weeks so the breeder was with them and feeding them 24 7. Sherman loves other dogs and people but I worked at socialization the day that I got him at 8 weeks

My 15 week old German Sheperd puppy just got his rabies vaccination. You mentioned in your podcast they get them around 6 months old. I always thought it was 14 weeks or older. I'm hoping to start taking him more places now. I love that you are encouraging people to be careful until puppies are vaccinated. Some other You Tube trainers are saying if you don't take them out by 12 weeks, it's too late. I don't believe that. You can socialize them as you said, in your home or at friends & families' homes. I'm not risking my dog's health!

The best two dogs i have ever owned were taken from the litter at 4weeks old.The mother lost interest in feeding them,so i took them.They were house trained at 6 weeks old,both dogs which were brothers were superb all through their lives.We exposed them to everything they were likely to encounter very early in life.

I have promoted your daily Q&A's on my channel Robert. Puppies are hell : ), certainly not cute either but I don't think like that anyway. Zed was the worst puppy but after thousands of hours training She is a fantastic Assistance/Service Dog now. No joke on the thousands of hours either. Training started as soon as I picked her up from Breeder who was clueless, first time breeder. Never took pups out even in the garden. Dam to young as very slow to mature line. Previous Dams were very gentle but firm. So important to see pups with the Dam.. Totally agree regards litter mates. The breeder allowed one woman to have 2 of the pups,shame on her. I live by a school so had loads of kids touch her etc. Great video as always Robert, thank you : )

Do an episode on the father of modern dog training...William Koehler. Many of his offspring are still training. Many others are still using modified forms of the Koehler method. We want a podcast about the Koehler method as it is the base for all real dog training. Educating people on the different equipment, I.e. chain/cinch collar made for corrections vs a harness which is made for pulling. Stuff like that would be very informative and convincing coming from you. Thanks!!!

Holistically educated vets will support doing titers on your dog after the dog has had it's one year vaccines. Titers are blood samples analyzed for antibodies to all the common dog diseases. Titer results on rabies from the lab's vet are an acceptable substitute for rabies vaccination in most states, but are not yet ok for international travel.

Hey Robert I posted this question on a recent “ask me anything “ video and just came across this podcast which is making me more concerned about this question. So will post it here as well. Hey Robert Just became a member to refresh myself in puppy training. Have used Leerburg and Michael Ellis to train botH my Labs. We now have a 13 week old Aussie Shepard puppy with resource guarding issues that we do not know how to deal with. When he guards he will growl very aggressively, snarl, lunge and bite. He has bit down hard enough to break skin and has made me and my wife bleed at separate times. He also displays this behavior if someone tries to pick him up while he’s sleeping. He’s a great dog and taking to training well but we’re in over our heads with this. We have tried being firm and also tried using a leave it command and replacing the dropped item with a treat. PLEASE HELP. Neither our vet or breeder has been able to resolve this issue.

You'll need to start by hand feeding and gradual desensitization in particular to resources like food, then to startle effects, like sound. Hard to explain via messages... but structured training and hand feeding should def start you off right!

Well, why is someone picking up the dog while it’s sleeping? Stop it. ‘ Let sleeping dogs lay’. Is an age old expression of wisdom. Correct the growl RIGHT AWAY. Say, “No!” If it continues, the dog is kenneled. This is not punishment, it is a consequence. At all other times, the crate is open and it’s his domain of choice. We give our kids ‘ time out’ in a place where they must remain quiet until you feel they have done their time( one minute per year of age is a good rule of thumb). But it must be quiet. Never release a dog from a kennel when it’s noisy, whining jumping. Your dog is smart. When this happens consistently, the dog catches on. I give my shepherd a choice. I say” Quiet”. If she ignores me the first time, I say do you need to go to your kennel or are you going to listen? Poof. She knows her choice is to obey.

I do all the introduction work and do not start vaccines until 12 weeks when their maternal antibodies have diminished . My puppies meet visitors of all ages that are safe . I have also raised single puppies successfully but behaving like a puppy myself or a mother dog. I also guarantee my dogs for life for any reason so they never end up in a shelter I am in their life for 17 years .Not everyone likes that so that family does not get a dog . That is my promise to my dogs

I think a good solution for a singleton or, puppy that doesn't have a mother, is to introduce a very balanced dog into it's life on a regular basis, every day if possible. Dogs know how to speak dog to another dog, better than any human being can. My 11 year old Cavalier is so smart and confident, never any problems with her, that I have had her help me with dogs that I train with any issues, except dog aggression, she's only a Cavalier after all. She projects such strong leadership the other dog almost always has followed her example!! Cleopatra lays down the law immediately upon meeting, u can see it happening right in front of your eyes. I watch her to see her reaction to anything going on with other dog, then, I act accordingly. I've had her since she was 8 wks old and she's been a born leader from day one, never any exceptions. She is just like Cleopatra, queen of the Nile....extremely bright, cunning, confident and beautiful. Never had a dog like her!!

In the "wild" wouldn't people be prey to a dog? I have a problem with neighbors having aggressive, hundred pound dogs. There have been reports of dogs attacking and eating people so it disturbs me when people own large, uncontrollable (due to strength and size) dogs left outside alone behind a tiny four foot fence.

I got 2 different breeds about 2 months apart. I just herd you recommend not doing that. We are a large family with quite a bit of people and animals. Do you recommend doing anything different? Our last dog was a Rottie. These 2 dogs are a Am staff girl and a Rhodesian Ridgeback boy. I though it would be a good balance for my Family. Does anybody have any recommendations?

what's the best way to let my kids (1 year old and 7 year olds) socialize with our 9 week old GSD female? They love her, but she's still in the mouthy stage. My 1 year old will stick her fingers in the crate, and let the puppy nibble, as long as it's not too hard. Or when the pup is out, she'll be around her for a while until the pup gets a little to "intense", then I have to separate them. My 7 year old is just loud and runs and jumps, etc, like you said, which seems to bait in the "attack" of the socks or pants legs from our pup. He's been doing better about just standing there calmly when she approaches him, instead of running away, so she will occasionally just sniff around him and keep going, which is awesome. But most the time she'll start biting his socks or pants, which then he starts laughing or being loud, or trying to run, which then turns the game in to "catch the loud kid" lol. While entertaining, I'm afraid it's setting the precedent that smaller people are prey/play toys.

I taught my puppy to touch the palm of my hand on command, then she gets a treat. My 7yr old plays this game with her and they both have learned to be calm and gentle with each other. If she nips too much, she usually needs a nap, so a few minutes in the crate let’s us know for sure. The kids also turn away and won’t play with her if she’s hurting them.

@@rebekahmiller4143 Good idea. My pup is now almost 5 months old, so she mouths much less. And since she's now as tall as my 1 year old, she doesn't jump on her anymore. But she still gets in her face and is too intense for her, so that might be a good 'trick' to teach her and let the kids do. Thanks for the suggestion.

What do you do with a puppy when you live in the country?

I'm no expert but I live in the country, so 5 times a week I drive into town and go to the local park ( not dog park) where he sees people, prams, bikes other dogs. I am soon going to be walking him on a busy road on an industrial estate. He also goes to doggy classes each week. He comes in the car to shopping malls and I just walk him round the carpark , not sure if this would work for you. But all the best.

My family member left their brand new puppy with an adult dog known for behavioral problems. Unfortunately he killed her. People please take separating and slow introductions seriously when bringing in a new puppy!

I don't trust one single producer of dog food to feed my dog better than I do. I've looked at most all of them. If I can't sit down and enjoy a bowl of dog food myself, health risk free, then my dog is NOT getting it.

My puppy constantly needs something in his mouth. I question if he didn't spend enough time with his mom (granted having 12 puppies could do that) as he still suckles. He also nips a lot and I've tried different methods but he hasn't responded to any of them. Doesn't matter if I have a toy in my hand, he'll go after my hand. He'll nip at our faces and arms even if we're not playing...it's so frustrating. He also resource guards chews and garbage! So he has bitten us and broke skin 1 too many times. I question what I'm doing wrong with training in regards to that since he's doing amazing with everything else.

Get a professional trainer to help you. The KZbin trainers can't help you with that behavior unless they have the dog to work with directly. Those are serious issues! Good luck
