This is so deep, it immediately made a positive impact on my attempt to simulate his Collings 470 JL advertisement version of "Ryland".

Beautiful advice-it’s so true, but getting a reminder about being human with all its imperfections is more important now than ever in our world of auto tune and AI-great video thanks.

Absolutely, Mark! Glad you enjoyed this... Hopefully you caught the other 3 "Lessons from Lage" videos.

What is this original video of Julian please?
@RobertCassard4 ай бұрын
Thanks for asking, lazerwolph. I shot the video myself during Chris Thile's Acousticamp in 2023. I don't have permission to release the whole thing, so I only share excerpts and summarize what I learned.

Robert... I was intrigued by your title, but having listened to the 4:20 mark, you have told me nothing about how to play better, bolder solos. The video has been full of repetition and obvious philosophies... I found myself saying "get to it" several times. You've lost me, and if there is nothing of value inside the first two minutes, you'll lose others too.

Thanks for the comment, David. While studying with Julian, I discovered he’s all about the philosophies, (and certain exercises, which I shared in other videos in the series). Sorry if the “better bolder” title reference isn’t clear. Two key elements: 1) play what the music needs (instead of showing off) , and 2) take risks and have faith in the audience. Yeah, they’re not typical advice, but that’s why they’re so important. Maybe I should change the title to “play more memorable” solos?

I appreciate what you're trying to do, but if anyone has ever been a working musician, written and recorded music these two "key elements" should be well known. It's just that, in the absence of examples demonstrating each approach for those that don't grasp the concepts, there is a significant disconnect between playing what the music needs. having faith in the audience and playing better, bolder guitar solo's. Perhaps the "more meaningful guitar solo's" found in the description would be the better title. @@RobertCassard

So long as you're happy that it better reflects the actual content. And hey, you can add this into the mix too "The sign of a mature musician is knowing what not to play" - Dizzy Gillespie @@RobertCassard

@@davidscotbrown3241 I have always loved Dizzy. Here's another quote from him. It resonates for my family and me as lifelong users of homeopathy (with great results): ‘There have been two great revelations in my life: The first was bepop, the second was homeopathy.’ I should have added his quote about "knowing what not to play" to this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZCvYn-ke8ism5o
