Hey, Robert, we were just gifted a 1998 Volvo S70 GLT. It sat for 4 years and we have replaced everything we were supposed to replace. We started it today and let it run a few minutes. We turned it off to check and fill the tires, but it wouldn't start again. Nothing. No dash lights, nothing. I did notice a faint noise that I believe is the fuel injectors. But otherwise, the battery might as well be dead (it's new BTW).

Robert I enjoyed your video, one other thing that may prevent a car from starting would be corrosion in the cables either at the battery or to the starter and that can be checked by doing voltage drop tests on those cables, there are you tube videos on this if you add this dimension to your videos it would be that much better.Anyway, great video.

These Volvo I5's have a rare hiccup that happens from time to time. It's called the Lawnmower syndrome. If someone starts the car and doesn't let the motor run long, and shuts it off (like moving the car to move it far enough to get the lawnmower out of the garage), it can cause the fuel in the piston area to wash the oil off the piston walls. At that point you will have NO COMPRESSION which will cause the car not to start. Two ways to correct it: 1. Long crank. 2. Add oil to pistons & crank.

That happened to me once when I try to crank the car and realized I had left a tool on the engine and immediately shut the car off. Car wouldn't start until I cranked it like 10 times. Thanks

the green wire is the ground and the other wire is the power cable from the battery so basically when you turn the key you complete the circuit and ground the starter making it push out and spin the flywheel. just wanted to give some insight to the whole process

Its actually called a flexplate on automatic transmissions, and a flywheel on manual trans clutch assembly.

Hi Robert, First off I want to say how much I appreciate your Volvo videos! I'm the proud parent of a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE wagon. Just did a lot of body & electrical work to get it back on the road after about a year. A week after I got it inspected, the engine cut out while driving.I haven't been able to start the engine for weeks. It cranks, but you can't hear the fuel pumps engage. They're pretty new, and I tested them by bypassing the relay. They're fine. However, they don't engage, even after I bought a new relay, replaced the radio suppression relay, and rebuilt the distributor including a brand new hall effect sensor. I even soldered on a new wiring harness for the hall effect sensor, since the old one was pretty ratty. Still no start. Have replaced power stage and checked approximately 10981924810 ground connections. Also just tried out a junkyard ignition ECU (in the right kick panel). No start! So sorry for the rant, but I figured if anyone would have a suggestion, it might be you. Keep on keeping on!

I'm saying that you can not get codes from a car that has had the battery removed. Have you checked and verified the other items in the video? What is missing? Fuel pressure? Spark? Compression? Timing?

I have a 2001 volvo v70xc. Motor started knocking and so it was pulled out and rebuilt, put it back in and now it won’t start. Computer says CAN BUS df13 & df16, I can get it to run being on the gas. Any help?

Always good videos... I had the same issues with the car not cranking..I changed the relays,the key ring, and even did a number of resets . IN the end it was teh netural switch. I confirmed this by putting the key in start mode then moved the transmission lever back and forth 20 times really fast... then the car started right up. Turns out this is a common problem.

Make sure the alarm is not triggered and that the positive battery cable is good.

@@RobertDIY Those were all fine and the starter was good. Couldn't think of anything else to check, so I ended up taking it to my mechanic sadly. It ended up being the lock mechanism in my steering wheel was ground out, so my key wouldn't turn because there was no resistance...

At 3:30 of your video, you say to set your meter to read battery voltage, but then you set it to AC voltage setting for 50v range, on the right side of the dial selector. I think you mean to set it to DC voltage setting for 50v range, on the left side of the dial selector. Just a FYI for those using one of these meters for the first time. Then you read the battery voltage on the DCv scale of the meter that goes from 0 to 50. The battery tester scale (red/black bars) on the bottom of the meter screen are for 1.5 and 9 volt flashlight or watch batteries, and are tested with the switch set in the upper right section of the dial selector.

I just this week started having starting problems with my 2003 3L V6 Ford Ranger. So far it has only happened twice. Each time it started and drove fine. But when I went to start it again it cranked just fine but wouldn’t start. After 10-20 minutes ± it starts right up and runs fine. When it isn’t starting all gauges and lights are working normal. New Battery + clamps no other problems

Some Volvos also have a 2nd battery, auxiliary battery. That can cause the car to not turn on if the aux battery is dead

could be a blown fuse for the electronic throttle body or the electronic control module. Check all fuses that involve car starting. Maybe a bad ignition module, break pedal sensor, brake light.

Hi Robert, I really appreciate your videos, helped me many times. I have a problem with my 1997 S70 20V, non turbo. Yesterday it started to run rough, then died. I couldn't get it started, but it was cranking well. Today I tried to start it, went well but died after about 2 minutes. Same old story, it is cranking but won't start. I have no error codes. I noticed that it has lost some coolant, but I don't know if this can be related. Cheers!

Thanks, I have checked fuel pressure, it is ok. Also swapped 103 relay, still no success. What worries me is some coolant below my car. I'll try something more, but I'm running out of ideas. Maybe it is something ignition-related. Or lack of compression...

Hey Robert, Thanks for the helpful videos. Now to my question. 1998 Volvo S70 non-turbo The vehicle does crank but it won't start then when it tries to start it ceases turning with a little thump at the end. Stuff I've done so far: Changed air filter, fuel is going to the injectors, fuel pump is working, all spark plugs are connected and seem to be working, checked fuses in the PCM. Any help will greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi Robert thanks for your videos. Here's my problem I'm hoping you can help with. We have a 2004 volvo S60 that currently has a starting problem. Here are some facts. No problems until one week ago and as my wife was driving home on her thirty mile work run the vehicle shut down and my wife had to pull off to the shoulder. She turned the key and on the first attempt car started right back up and the problem never happened again. One week later still no problems and the vehicle made the trip to work uneventful. But upon the end of work day vehicle fails to start. Turn the key plenty of electrical power to operated electric windows and lights bright but no crank. Called in service company for jump start but condition remained the same with no crank. Had vehicle towed home to my drive way and tried to start but still no crank. The following evening tried to start and fired right up. Turned key off and made a second attempt and fired right up again. Following morning first attempt fired right up. Don't want to drive it again until problem figured out and corrected. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million Glen

Thanks Robert. Update: saw on another video that sometimes the green wire that slides on to the connector on the starter gets some corrosion and can cause the no start situation. Although it was in a difficult place to disconnect and reconnect did manage to break it loose and slide back on. So far as I stated earlier the vehicle is starting again but don't know if it will continue to do so. In regards to your comment about bad battery wire: Found out the battery is housed in the trunk and after examination all terminal and wires looked great.. Also when service provider tried to jump start he did it through the large fuse box under the hood where the battery wires are connected and didn't see any corrosion there either. Yeah I did. The one code was a transmission sensors. there was a code for the sensor it required and update from Volvo that no else can preform. Im not sure if there are any others.

I've had the fun of an intermittent no crank no start. My dad and I suspected the ignition switch, rather than wait for it to progress to a steady failure I replaced that. Been a couple weeks and it seems like that was the right call, though until it's been a month out I'm not calling it conclusively fixed. I hate intermittent problems.

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5s that recently overheated also was still starting fine before changing thermostat and disconnecting battery, but also it had a bad positive terminal that was changed twice I tested the battery and it was good tested the starter it passed and no dashboard, headlights, interior lights, or auto seats are working just a beeping sound when I put the key in the ignition .

I have an Elantra. 2005! Love Her! I put a New Parts to update her. You should know that a Salesman Automobile will sell a Lemon! Well, I invested a lot. She was Excellent. I filled up. I usually fill-up at 1/2 tank. Can over filling cause a Fuel Pump a problem to start? Battery Brand New, Brand New Cable Terminals. I take really Excellent Care of my Car.

Its a 1999 s70. I put in a new fuel pump relay and the pump works fine. Its getting gas. There's new spark plugs in it. I put in a new cam shaft and crank sensor along with temp sensor and thermostat.

thanks for the video and information. my 95 850 t5 has a crank no start condition. I have no codes. I replaced crank sensor and cam sensor, I have good fuel pressure, and compression and timing is good. i also check fuel injection relay and it works fine. I am not getting any spark past the distribututor but I am getting 12 volts at the coil. im baffled

Mohamed Alawy Cars have a switch in the system called (on Volvos) a PNP (Park Neutral Position) switch. It lets the car know that it is safe to crank/start because the car is out of a moving gear. If your PNP switch is bad, it will stop the car from cranking. You can also have a security issue with the key.

Your videos are a big help! Thanks Robert! I have a Volvo that ran on a low tank of gas for months and had a problem with burning oil but ran decent. It stop one day, so it sat for 6 weeks, then I replaced the starter because there was no crank. Then it turned over, no combustion. So I tested the spark and got a new distributor & plugs and no start. So I tested my compression just because. Dry: 90-125 per cylinder, average. Then wet test; 150-200. & it started after my test! I waited a few hrs now there's no start. Cranks over but no combustion. I want to check codes now with my obd2 but can't start the car... what should I do next?

2006 Impala V-6 3.9 automatic.No crank no noise. I took the starter off and had it tested at 2 different auto part stores and, they said it was good. All accessories work. I put the starter back in the car and, still nothing.New battery and cables complete tune up. No shorts and all grounds are good and clean.I was told that, the starter could not be strong enough to turn the flywheel but, off the car it will start. Is this possible? Awesome vieo. My Kia Rio 2009 just wouldn’t start at all. The dashboard blinked once when I turned the key but didn’t start at all. It wasn’t cranking and there wasn’t a click. I bought the battery last year from Autozone, so I feel like there is a bigger problem other than a “dead battery”

Sometimes my '98 XJ8 takes two cranks to get started. Usually it starts within 2-2.5 seconds of cranking. But sometimes I know to stop, pause for a moment, and then try again. I'm now trying to push the accelerator pedal at least half way down before attempting to start, hoping that will be the little trick I need. Do you have any similar situations on your XJ8 and if so, what are you or did you do to correct it? My wife is afraid it won't start again sometime when we're out.

These videos were very informative. I am having trouble with my honda accord 2004 lx it cranks won't start. This vehicle has direct ignition system. I took out one other plug connectors and pit a plug in it to see if it sparks am it does not. At first I changed battery and that cleared all codes. I don't know how to reach my cause of no spark with out the trouble code. And not sure where these cam or crankshaft sensors are in this vehicle. Any guidance on how to proceed now with the trouble shooting my issue will be appreciated. No spark no start issue with cleared codes is is my case. Thanks

Rizwan Chaudhry Always read the codes and document them before clearing them. You should visit a Honda forum to try to figure out the location of those sensors. You could also try Google. My guess is one of them have gone out.

Great video. I have a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu, it recently stalled on me while driving on the freeway, only the oil and battery light came on while losing power and stopped completely. Now it cranks but wont turn over, any idea on what could be the problem?

I have no crank no start and also no clock or radio, the keyring does illuminate and the hazards blink when security is set so there is some power to it. I have interior lights working as well and even highbeams.. just no clock, no radio center control and no start crack click nothing. I have load tested the battery and it is good with great cca too. A weird maybe related thing ive noticed is the car wont lock/unlock driver door the fob, so i had a feeling maybe immobilizer BUT strange that the clock on dash isnt on.

I suggest you close the hood, all doors, etc.. Lock and unlock the drivers door with the key, then try to start the car. If that does not work, you likely have a problem in the starting circuit, maybe immobilizer lock out or computer problem. Also, it might help to know what kind of vehicle you have???

Whoops forgot to mention 99 v70 t5m. It has only been one day. It rab the night before to park into a space.. I did not open all doors and closed. I only opened/closed the trunk + driver and passenger side. Tried locking/unlocking few times with the fob, noticed it unlocks the trunk and sometimes doors but does nothing with driver door. Sometimes the door pin moves maybe a millimeter. I'm curious to check fuse 11C/8 "immobilizer, combined instrument panel, light switch"

@@RobertDIY I'll also be checking the starter today with a meter, I hear that the cluster panel is in line with starter? Nit sure if that's true. Just find it strange that the clock doesn't work but all lights have power

Kinda leaves you stuck. You have to check the other items. Also, the car should still start with a bad MAF.

Robert I have a 1990 740 and I started my car and all the dash lights stayed on when I started it. It drove fine and because I had to drive it I just kept driving. After about 10 miles the car died. Looking under the hood I found it had broken the alternator belt. Replaced belt and it wouldn’t start. Got a friend to give me a jump but no start. There’s a clicking sound from the fuse box area on the inside of the car...like a relay is not doing its job. The car is not turning over. I’m going to get my multimeter and test voltage at battery and starter but have a feeling that there’s enough juice but that clicking inside the car is the culprit but don’t know if there’s a relay that’s bad.

Robert DIY okay will due multimeter shows about 12 volts on battery and to starter. Turn the key and no change to battery voltage, as if it’s not even drawing on battery

Robert, Your videos are helpful. I am somewhere in between the two situations you are describing. I have a 95 Volvo 850 T-5R. I can start it up, but if I drive only a short distance, turn it off, get out then come back to start it up after only a few minutes or right away it does not start. No cranking is heard just a click. I wait 10-15 minutes it then starts up without a problem, If I start the day and drive for 10-20 minutes, then the problem does not occur, it starts up without any issues for the rest of the day. I replaced the fuel pump relay but problem persists. Any thoughts?

ciro williams Pull the plugs and try to turn it by hand. If it still does NOT turn, the engine is locked up.

I have a 1994 Lexus es300. when turning key the key, the car does not turn on, crank, nor does any of the electrical functions work (windows, radio etc.). at first I gave it a jump , and it started but quickly died, i took the battery to an auto store they said it was a bad battery so I bought a new one. now my car wobt come on at all. what can be a possible reason?

+rosonm Did it work at all with the new battery? If not, you have a cable/connection issue. If it did for a little while, you have a bad alternator.

Robert Shaw Motor LOCKED UP? Pull the plugs and try to turn the crank over by hand with a wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt.

no start no crank condition can also be caused by other things than just bad battery or starter... for example neutral safety switch, bcm, pcm, tcm, all related fuses and relays, wiring shorts, bad grounds to name a few

Hey Rob, I bought a 91 Nissan 240sx with a misfire, and the car would start and run on 3 cylinders. I found that the problem was the fuel injectors. So I bought 4 new injectors. While waiting for them I also bought and installed spark plugs and wires. But after installing the fuel injectors, now the car won't start. I figured it was a battery problem, so I got a new battery. No change. Then I tried starting the car with my foot all the way on the throttle it cranks and after a while it begins to slowly go up in rpms. But once I let off the throttle it dies. While doing this it shakes a lot. I just randomly checked the oil dipstick and oil spewed out. I don't know what to do:(
