My heart sank a bit when Poppy said "volunteer". All these important jobs of monitoring wildlife health deserve to be government-funded. It's great that we have people willing to devote their time to efforts like this unpaid, but I wish they didn't have to do so.
@sleepygryph
@sleepygryph Жыл бұрын
Volunteer doesn't automatically mean unfunded or unsupported, the royal in their name isn't there just for aesthetics. While the RSPB is a charity organization they do have their supporters. They probably do work with the government ensuring conservation sites and supporting laws that benefit the wildlife. As a charity they probably qualify for some form of tax relief as well meaning more of their funds can be directed toward conservation. The nature of their mission means that they probably have periods during the year where there is a surge of activity so bringing in volunteers helps them meet their responsibility with having a bureaucratic glut the same amount of employees would create. The answer to everything isn't government programs.

Poppy works for the RSPB but like many people she is passionate about wildlife and the monitoring she does as volunteer It’s not a bad thing it shows people care and are willing to help where they can, to me it shows good character in someone Many of the volunteers are retired and it gives them a real sense of purpose and pride Think of everything I do and have done for nature putting up hundreds of nest boxes taking care of injured animals and getting them back in the wild, I do it because I love what I do and like to make a difference not because of money

My goodness, those eggs were definitely in a precarious place! I'm glad there are viewing platforms, so Robert isn't hanging by his heels from a cliff. Incredible video!

When I used to go there as a kid there was no viewing platforms or fences and we crept to the edge of the 400 foot cliff to watch the birds A bit safer nowadays and still as enjoyable

They are a wonderful sight and i have been to Bempton cliffs, but some of the reasons for sea birds struggling are over fishing (the next time you have fish and chips think of the birds having to fly far greater distances to find a meal) and the seas warming due to climate change,

Yes things are changing for sure The good news is gannet population has grown massively over my lifetime and the kittiwakes seemed to be doing okay but there numbers have dropped over the past few decades there was more when I used to go as a teenager
