@@Thevocaliststudio Actually looks like basic kata front, back and centre stances -common in many martial arts systems: a lowered centre of gravity for good stability and breathing. Advanced shodan and above get much looser with the stances but the principle remains.

Very important technique explained really well. You really have to use your ear to know if you've lowered the trachea enough....again it's the dark boomy sound you should listen for.
@Thevocaliststudio
@Thevocaliststudio 2 жыл бұрын
we don't lower the trachea, but Yes, dampening the larynx is great for getting a more "boomy" / chesty sound and for anchoring stability. This is all explained and taught with demonstrations in my online courses. Thanks for posting. www.TheVocalistStudio.com

Bit late catching up on this video. I just love the idea of being in control of my voice and all its parts. I learnt to sing classical many years ago when I was still a teenager and the singing process came very naturally to me. So I never really dissected the elements of the sound I was making because I was naturally able (most of the time) to make the desired sound for classical music. But now I'm trying rock and pop singing more seriously, I'm floundering because I now need to alter the sound I'm making, which is hard to do when I don't know how or why I'm making the sound I do in the first place. Clearly, I've never had a whole lot of control of my voice. I just sang and sounds came out. But now I'm realising that understanding these individual elements allows me so much more range and variety than ever before and I can start to choose what I do and when, depending on what effect I want to generate. I've just practised this method with you of lowering the larynx and I can actually feel it going down and the sound becoming rounder and richer. And of course I can reach those higher notes more easily and with more power and richness without having to force the sound out. I'm only just starting my course, still doing a lot of reading and youtube research, but I feel I'm going to need a 1 on 1 lesson soon so I can get coach Robert's tailored advice to the sound I'm making vs. that which I want to create. This is complicated. And heck it's a lot of fun! Thank you for sharing!

Robert Lunte That’s cool! I dared to practise the larynx dampening in my rock band gig last night (I probably shouldn’t be practising in a live gig but heck I ain’t professional and life’s a learning curve). It was awesome! It didn’t even sound like me! Had loads of people complimenting me on my voice (I also know most listeners don’t have a clue what they’re listening to and think real crap is good too - still it was nice!)

I have definitely formed the bad habit of straining my larynx over the years so much so that I don't know how to sing otherwise. This causes my throat to be in pain after 30 to 40 min of singing. I also put a lot of stress on myself when I sing and feel like I can't breathe. Instead of letting my voice flow it feels like it's trapped. I paused the video and tried exactly what you were doing and the difference was night and day. I'm excited to keep practicing this. Will this slowly bring some vocal freedom for me and allow me to move away from feeling choked and stress on my throat? I'm asking this because it's really been scaring me that I feel pain after singing and makes me sad that I carry so much stress when I sing instead of being able to enjoy it.

Hi Mr. Lunte! Amazing lesson as always. I have a big confusion with this thing about classical technique v.s. pop/rock technique. Im getting training as a baritone in opera style, but I want to learn at least the basics of how the pop/rock technique works, like: breathing technique, resonance, and all the diferences. It will be great if you do a video of this, since you have a great knowlegde in this area. Im just a student and I want to learn and be a great singer. Thanks Mr. Lunte.

Wow! Robert! You just bristle with passion... it's inspirational! You are so uniquely articulate and engaging! I did a lot of training with two different Seth Riggs lineage teachers but never got to the techniques for dampening the larynx. Awesome, it's the first time i could really feel the lowered larynx position while singing. Love that exercise! I must admit, taking the note up has a bit of a pull up on it. I'm sure you have some great insights on that also! I'll subscribe....Thanks!

I am kind of intermediate, been training my voice for almost a year. And after a week(only) of playing with this around... kind of got a knack of it, still of course only one week... so still not so easy to lower the larynx intentionally. This is the best vocal video/exercise I have seen. And my throat now is never soar after training. I can belt in notes I couldn't before. You rock man! You rock ! :) I'm speechless. Just the problem is I can practise in decent volume when nobody's home, including my neighbours. Any tips where I could look for a place to train ?

***** I am really considering buying it. I'm just hesitating, cause already wasted quite a lot of money vocal coach and another vocal program, both gave me results, just not fast and sufficient, I think I have hit a plateau. And 200$ is really a lot for me.(living in developing country) Also the problem is, I cannot practise in full volume most of the time(only 2-4hours in full volume/a week) and plus I warmup and exercise with a non full voice everyday for up to 30mins/day. How much should I train to see satisfying results ? Maybe the problem is that I am not practising enough...

Hi Robert. Is dampening the larynx the method that male flamenco singers use to get that darkened sound, even though they are singing very high? Is that the trick they use? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this because it's doing my head in trying to hit their high notes, yet still having that dark, thick sound. When I hit their notes, my voice sounds much brighter than theirs. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Robert, I would like to ask you, when you say damping the larynx what exactly do you mean? what you are teaching, is the same with the depressed (overly low) laryngeal position? Because I read that this will cause vocal problems, but on the other hand, I know for example that the yawn position might lower the larynx a little bit, and they teach this even in bel canto classical training, and this it will not cause problems because it opens the throat and releases the voice. If you could please explain.
@princesscharis
@princesscharis 10 жыл бұрын
I just read that lowering the larynx, it actually was a novelty of the 1830s and it does make the voice darker, richer and colors the vowels, but it also may sacrifice some agility to some singers.

Very interesting! When I imitate Layne Staley or Geoff Tate's low parts I lower my larynx like that, but I always thought that I was cheating and that those guys have way lower and fuller voices than I do. So they were using this technique that they learned from David? So I'm not "faking it"?! I always wondered how Layne's voice was so low and deep for such a small guy! I learn a lot from your videos that I never ever knew before.

I'm very interested in learning about vocals professionally, I already have the raw material, in fact i have a lot of your techniques already down (Although your videos have helped me perfect the art) I would just like to know more about how to get closer to Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Ect. They have these crazy high head voices and they are really hard to reach. I've pretty much given up on trying to reach Shannon Hoon's vocals, although I would love to reach those notes. I would just like to know if its possible to break out of the High Tenor Vocals and maybe into the Concert Alto :D On another note, how much are your vocal lessons? Im moving to the Seattle region soon and would love to out forth the time and effort to sound like the greats. That way i can formulate my own sound from it, and put it into my own music. Thank you for reading this and please comment back! Have a good day, and dont stop being awesome!

Thank you, and I will remember that. I get what you are saying, i know that there is far much more to learn from your program. The expanses of the voice go beyond what one person could teach. I am just a Padawan in the sea of vocal Jedi. I would love to purchase your Four Pillars of Singing, It seems like an excellent way to learn. I just feel that there is so much more you could learn from training in person. Sorry for the very amateur questions. Maybe for the few months I'm still in Indiana I should look into some professional training? I've done Vocal training to Melissa Cross's "Zen of Screaming" and I found it very helpful for what it's used for, "Screaming" but I would love to unlock more. Thank you for answering my questions. For how good you are, $100 and hour sounds like a very reasonable and modest price. I look forward to meeting you once im in the area. I will check out the links and maybe even order your DVD's. Have a good one man, and once again, thank you for taking the time out of your day to answer stupid question.

Oh believe me, i believe you. I gave up on screaming because it couldnt be put into a sound that people really want to hear. Lets face it, i love a kick ass drum solo, but that double bass peddle hurts my head. I really DO appreciate what you do. Ive always loved music, i was in swing choir for 4 years. Im gonna take your word for it, you have a great voice and it had to come from somewhere. I cant exaggerate enough how much i thank you for the responses. Consider me a customer, im going to order it tonight. I still look forward to at least one private lesson once im in Seattle, depends on how my bank account is looking by that time. The move is going to cost enough. Thank you so much. Have great day!

AWESOME lesson thanks. I will buy your program when I can. I have been in bands for a long time "mainly as a guitar player but I sang too" and I know your lessons I would learn a lot from. Theres some voice lessons on youtube that arent nearly as good as yours. I know a lot of methods but not from proper training and your lessons will help me with that :-). And I never sang anything in my range either so recently just doing that has opened up my world bigtime.
