A comparison between the SNES and the SNES Mini. This is another example of why its not worth it to pay more for a "rare" system. The Mini isn't any better then the original SNES. Its smaller but its also a little less powerful.

@@RobertNES816 Late 80's & early 90's pop culture can't be beat! ;) Where's the time machine when you need one? These days as far as modern gaming goes, i focus on Switch, with a splash of VR & PS5. Neither of which can compete against being a kid and gaming it up during the 8-16 bit generations. Pop culture took a noticeable decline at around 96, and it was officially over by the 2000's.

I once had the original SNES, non-1Chip, for the longest time as a kid until hard times in 2018 caused me to sadly lose the legendary console (not broken, just went missing). I now have a stock Jr. version to replace it, though it costed $130. In comparison, it works like a charm like I remembered when running games, but since it is 100% 1Chip, the picture is sharper, but the white levels are too bright. For authenticity, I perfer the original pre-1Chip SNES and I will look for another working one, but the SNES Jr. is surely worth in my collection given how rare and expensive they are nowadays. It's not perfect, but it is way better than having a clone system, as it still has the raw hardware of the original model. ...And I strongly recommend using a CRT TV, not a flatscreen when showcasing old consoles.

If you get the retrovision SNES component cables, it has a contrast switch that fixes the brightness issues on the 1chip.

Very informative video! One thing that I've noticed, that I don't see mentioned often, is how the audio on the original (SHVC-CPU-01) SNES is ever so slightly better than on the 1chip version. It's likely because of the more fleshed-out sound hardware. I could be completely wrong, but it's an observation I've made.

The SNES Mini is actually a better SNES than the original as far as video output. It is what is known as a 1-CHIP SNES, meaning it has a unified CPU+PPU architecture, and this unified chip produces a cleaner video signal. There are some 1-CHIP versions of the standard SNES as well, but they are difficult to locate. The only issue is that the SNES Jr. is missing the motherboard traces for S-Video chroma and luma, so if you want to output S-Video from your SNES Jr., you will need to crack the console open and add those traces back (one dollar's worth of parts, and a bit of solder). There are games that have weird graphical issues with 1-CHIP SNES models, but they are few and far between. That said, all SNES have the same CPU, and are all equally "powerful". This, for reference, is a SNES Jr. comparing the standard composite signal with the re-added S-Video: www.twitch.tv/screevo/v/81106316
@stephen_irl

More specifically, it is generally SuperFX games (Star Fox, Stunt Racer, etc) that have graphical issues with a 1-CHIP SNES, but there aren't a ton of SuperFX games out there.

I don't know why people continue to cling to this rhetoric. Increased sharpness and overblown white levels isn't "better".

I agree, the snes mini does run a bit slower for FX games, but the definition between the blacks and colours are so much better. The trick to getting good video on the cheap with no mods on the snes mini is to run it through a good crt with a 3D comb filter. Make sure to turn the sharpness all the way down and you will notice the quality is comparable to s-video and the colours are more vibrant and sharper. I think the best TV's to use are the Sony Wega's and the JVC i'art.
@stephen_irl

I cracked my SNES Mini open and added S-Video by soldering in jumpers from the chroma and luma pins on the amp over to the multi-out, so I now have an S-Video capable 1-Chip SNES Jr. It is beautiful. I capture my SNES directly for twitch streaming, and don't apply any filtering to it other than standard de-interlacing.

The mini is no slower than the original models. It has better video output quality on composite than all the others and even beats the original launch revision's quality through s-video. Also, the vertical line through the middle that most super nintendos have was nearly completely removed from that model. It just falls short on its looks and how it's pretty bare bones as far as snes goes.

Hello! I from Eastern Europe. I have 2chip SNES (SNSP-001A(FRG), Pal, made for Germany), parents bought it in end of 1994. It one of the most big moments from my childhood. Later in beginings of 2000's, friend come to me to play in SNES games, and he ask me which my SNES is 1 or 2 chips, I be surprised. I say what it bought in 1994, he be surprised and said what he thought what my SNES 1chip, because picture very good and he not saw "soap" in angles of picture. Later he come again with special screwdriver, to see what inside my SNES, but we not be able to go deep enough, because we not be able to remove thing (eject) which jumps cartridge, it absolutely refuse to be removed. So, I don't know which revision of 2chip SNES I have. I and parents say to my friend what maybe quality of SNES (or it revisions) be different from country to country for which Nintendo produced it? Germany very important market for Nintendo, it prosperity and rich, and Nintendo do they best to give Germany best possible quality, in Germany quality very valued and important. Many years passed, but every summer, I playing in retro consoles, and in my SNES. I like retro games from time of my childhood. In city I have SNES classic mini and PlayStation classic (mini). Sometimes in internet I saw videos about "2chip vs 1 chip" SNES console, where people try to compare it and see some difference. How I understand, it hard to see this difference it so little, and even when you have a clue where to look it very hard to see. This difference exist, but it not so obvious for say "Wow!" I thinking about it, and I not so sure what 1chip console really better when 2chips, I try to look at this from logical point of view and analogy from technical change in other technic. Everybody hear about existance of "budget PC", for exaple PC on Intel Celeron processor, which one made work of 2 chips. It "budget PC" cheaply because of using 1chip, not 2, it work slow and worse when normal PC with 2chips, but it work, be cheaply - main idea for creation of this PC. So, I think in theme how 2chip replaced by 1 - it looking the same story. I not understand how 1chip can be better when 2chip? 2chip obviosly more expensive, and I think it must be better, especially when we talking about old consoles. I think number of chips very important for old technic. Sure, different revision with different chips and it number - it all give different, but is it give real preference in quality? And yet nobody not be able to convince me what "1chip" really so much better (better picture not different picture) when 2chip console. I think it all very fishily, and I will not surprise if someday we will know what about "1chip" be the myth, and main idea be for people (whom create it) to get more money and sell cheaply consoles at high price and do it artificially more expensive when "2chip". This what I think after overlook a lot of "compare" videos. Sure, maybe I not right, but I tell how it looks from the outside, when one video after another you see difference but not see real much better picture. Thanks to everyone for attention. RetroGaming Forever!✌😎 P.S.Please sorry for my poor English.

The only way you can have a 1 chip SNES is if it was the last production run. So figure 1996 or so just before the SNES Mini came out. The 1 chip will have slightly better picture quality compared to an old 2 chip SNES. You can see videos of there comparison. It's not super noticable without being modded for RGB out. Even then most retro up scalers will clean up the image from a modded console anyways. So basically in my opinion it's really not worth the effort. The SNES had better and more consistent video output compared to say the Sega Genesis with all of its various board revisions and on top of that video output chips that went with the same revisions.
