I guess it's because MW4 never got released on USA until the release of the Mini Console, and DH wasn't a great success at launch, maybe that was the "classics" label they meant. Both games are more like cult classics IMO, due to the fan translations and following they get on later years.

Same. I know he was going through some really hard times recently. I really hope he's been able to get back on his feet, and I hope the support the channel has gotten shows him that people do care and his work does have a positive impact on people. Personally, channels like this as well as AVGN/GameSack/Implant/Retropolis/Teddy Rubskin (back when he was around) have gotten me through some shitty periods in my life over the years. Funny thing is that the Turbo Mini is probably the best of the 3, a lot of games, a better overall selection than the Genesis Mini and it's the best way to own many of those games since there aren't really many ways to own most of them other than on PS3, Wii U and original hardware

Monster World IV, guys that it an amazing game, one of the best on the mini. Also Dynamite Heady is a very solid game. I think you guys did not play the Sega games enough to judge them properly.

but, as they say, there are many other ways of playing those games. Steam has them, and they're available elsewhere (certainly in the case of Dynamite Headdy). Not the same for SNES, thus it's more essential to get the SNES mini if you don't already own those games. Not that Dynamite Headdy or Monster World IV aren't great (they are), but simply that they're less essential.

8:07 - So does the Genesis mini which is actually correct. The Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) mini in 4:3 IS pixel perfect. The resolution for the Genesis is 320x240. That's 4:3. This is pixel perfect and fits perfectly on an old CRT which is what it was built for. The SNES Mini has a resolution of 256x240; an aspect ratio of 8:7. Back in the day, every single CRT you played the SNES on, the CRT stretched this to 4:3 because that's what analogue TVs do. In fact, many games built for the SNES had this in mind and knew they would get stretched. When the game has been stretched to 4:3, circles become perfectly round. Having the SNES Mini in pixel perfect mode is objectively incorrect and circles become oval. 4:3 mode is the right mode for both the SNES and Genesis. But then when the SNES is stretched this way, the Genesis is obviously showing more detail in the width with a higher resolution. At the end of the day, the Genesis is easily sorted; put it in 4:3 and you're good to go with no worries. With the SNES, you can do the same and it will look how it's meant to with a lower resolution, or put it in pixel perfect and everything looks squished. Honestly, it doesn't matter when comparing the two when you just want to chill and play games, but giving a point for the SNES for having pixel perfect mode when the Genesis is also pixel perfect and better at doing so, that shouldn't have been allowed 🙂

Kid Chameleon is a good game, Dynamite Headdy is an AMAZING action game, Monster World 4 is an excellent adventure platformer which was never released in English back then (so its inclusion here is a great option), Super Fantasy Zone is a really good shooter that was not released in the US, Light Crusader is an amazing action RPG and Wonder Boy 5 is another great adventure platformer. Sure, you could say that Alex Kidd and Virtua Fighter 2 are trash (and they are), but the SNES classic is not innocent (I'm looking at you F-Zero). Overall, for having more games, more variety and more 2 player games, the MegaDrive Mini is the winner.

The main thing I dislike about the Snes choices is that they pick the first games when the sequel is arguably superior, MMX not MMX2, and DKC not DKC2. Star fox 2 and FF6 are the exceptions, but unlike Genesis they didn't include the past games too, because why not have both? I see no reason they couldn't have included more. Genesis Mini has Streets of Rage *2* both Sonic 1 and 2, and Monster World 3/4 It just makes the game selection on Snes seem less interesting

I'd say it's a tie. Plus for the unreleased games in Genesis, Darius was actually created from scratch by a medical doctor b/c he was such a fan of the game and then Taito took that development and did the final touches, including music, and M2 emulated it perfectly (this was an amazing 3-way collab!). Tetris was released by Sega in the arcades but the MD version was never released due to Nintendo's copyright exclusivity at the time. However, this time around, it got the full blessings of Alexey Pajitnov and he even made a video congratulating the release of it for the Japanese MD title reveal party that Sega of Japan did. Really so much labor of love went into releasing the MD/Genesis Mini.

It all depends on what you grew up playing. I'd prefer games like Streets of Rage, Shinobi 3, Road Rash and Castle of Illusion rather than any games the SNES has to offer. Except Super Gouls and Ghosts. That game is amazing. Either way, I own both mini consoles, and they're both a lot of fun.

Dynamite Heady is one of the best games on the console. It has great graphics, music, design. I have also had a lot of fun with Monster World 4. Also, I wasn't planning on getting any of these mini consoles, but the Genesis mini was given to me as a gift. I liked it so much I will probably pick up a SNES and TurboGrafx if I can.

Psst. Sega save states have the option to lock your saves so you don't accidentally overwrite. I say that alone makes the Sega save states better. I definitely don't sit here wishing there was a rewind feature but if I ever overwrite accidentally I sure as hell would wish I had the lock feature.

Many of the SNES Classic's games are available via Switch Online, so if the deciding factor was really that the SNES games are more uniquely available on the SNES classic, this should be taken into consideration. I rarely use my SNES classic anymore as a result.

First time I'm a bit disappointed in a result, and it comes down mainly to the admittedly shallow way the game line-ups were looked at. While there are fair arguments regarding Sega re-releasing its games like crazy & offering prior "Mini" consoles, disregarding stuff like the Monster World games, Dynamite Headdy, or Super Fantasy Zone, the lack of acknowledgement of stuff that almost never saw re-release up until that point (Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Alisia Dragoon, & the Konami games, anyone?), & downplaying the fact that M2 went to the trouble of creating two brand new Genesis ports just for this Mini, is disappointing & showed a lack of familiarity with Sega's deeper cuts, which was the very intention of that Mini. Yes, these games don't have the instant name cult status that EarthBound has, but they are still generally considered absolute classics in their own rights; hope you guys don't get the rage of Monster World IV fans by saying that it's "not a classic". Not saying that Sega should have won, but considering the pros each side has over the other, this was definitely a Tie result. Beyond that, though, another great episode, and it was fun seeing Greg parodying Joe from Game Sack.

It basically came down to only caring about name value and not quality games. A lot of Nintendo fans always come down to "but how many Marios or Zeldas do you have?" The increased amount of games on the Mega Drive and the fact you can access all three regional versions for any games that have them made it a clear winner to me. Like, how can you penalize a system because its company actually cares about preserving its games more than the other lol

Disagree. There's clear anti SEGA bias and POOR consumer advice to spite SEGA. The Genesis Collections are BAD investments as they lack variety, suffer from 50 PAL Mhz, do NOT have the 3rd party rarities. Genesis Mini does and it is Horrible playing SEGA titles on PS4 and Xbox Controllers and they know it. Console Wars is very one sided, and clearly dislike SEGA as a competitor to Nintendo which is the way it SHOULD be. This is the poorest video they've done. Just shameful.

I'd have made mention of "Castle of Illusion" & "World of Illusion" being released on the Genesis mini. That was a complete surprise to me as they're licensed games-Disney licensed games at that-and the only way you could play them before would be if you owned the original games or emulate them. Also, say what you will about "Mega Man: The Wily Wars" but it was never officially released here in the US, apart from the Sega Channel. And, I actually really love the game. Not so much for the original 3 Mega Man games, but for Wily Tower. I still can't believe that Capcom has never revisited that concept with Mega Man games since. I love being able to choose from all the weapons and gadgets you've earned throughout the 3 games to take on unique levels and bosses the wua you choose to. Those 3 games alone were enough to make me buy and fall in love with the mini console, and none of them has been released on other compilations or consoles (though with the AtGames consoles, they'd still not be worth it).

I was thinking the same thing. It’s part of how I justified not picking it up was I already had most of these on my Wii U virtual console. Star Fox 2 was the only thing I couldn’t get if I wanted to and...guess what’s on Switch Now?

To be fair though, Switch Online service is more of a rental service you play monthly or yearly to keep playing these games, so it doesn't feel like you legit own these games. Virtual Console is a good argument since once you bought an SNES title on Virtual Console, you do own it. But Virtual Console doesn't count as a compilation. SNES Classic Edition is really the only way to actually buy an SNES compilation since it doesn't help that Nintendo never usually make normal compilations of their old school games. Sega normally makes numerous of compilations over the years to buy . If you ask me, I wish Nintendo brought the Virtual Console back for the Switch so I can buy these previous generation of games because as I mentioned before, in the Switch Online service, you don't actually own the NES and SNES games.

I'd get a Genesis/Mega Drive Mini just to be able to play games like Contra Hard Corps/Probotector or Castlevania Bloodlines/The New Generation. Original copies nowadays go for insane prices (and the PAL version of Bloodlines is even censored).

Hi there, some more info for you from a european guy who grew up with a super nintendo : being able to play to Final Fantasy, Super mario RPG and Earthbound was a nice surprice for us, because these games were not released on the super nintendo in Europe. We could buy them on the wii virtual console, but the store is closed now. The downside of the super nes mini for us, is that each games are in their NTSC version, because European TV were in 50 hz, and the game were converted to work with that. So in one hand it is cool to be able to play to these game in 60 hz now, but in other hand it's kinda sad to not able to play to games that were translated in French or German, only in english language. But we had time to learn english since then, so it's ok! Hope my comment it useful PS : Greg is right, the turbografx mini is awesome. PPS: love your videos!

Omg, I was dying of laughter after you threw the SNES controller with the USB and it landed in the genesis mini and you both screamed XD this video is so good. Also, the pixel perfect mode is only useful for the SNES mini because the SNES runs at a lower resolution, and on a real CRT had non-square pixels. Pixel perfect mode for 90% of mega drive games is 4:3, whereas for the SNES it would be 8:7, although the games were intended to be viewed at 4:3.

Nice video, the only thing I disagree with is Best Games title going to SNES Classic, technically the Genesis (even tho the game have been re-released many times) has better games, we are not comapring other collections, only what is the mini console with the best games. So I'd give the Best Games title to the Genesis.

Ok guys, I don't agree with Nintendo winning the last segment. It should have been a tie, and a tie overall for the episode. Here's why. For what I can understand, Nintendo only won because Sega have been releasing the games dozen of times for the past decade (and more), so its not so much of a "rare find" to play these games on the mini. But what about Nintendo? For what I know, almost all Nintendo published games have been re-released for newer Nintendo consoles and handhelds, such as Wii, Wii U, DS, Switch, Virtual Console in general. For example, almost all Snes classic games by Nintendo can be played on the Switch. Some others company's games are also easily to find somewhere, such as Contra 3, Final Fantasy 3 (6) and Megaman X. Now in the case of the Genesis mini, these are the games that Sega did not re-release since the Genesis era (as far as I know) Alisia Dragoon Castle of Illusion Ghouls 'n Ghosts Monster World IV Strider Thunder Force 3 World of Illusion And of course, the 2 completely new games, Darius and Tetris It has also games for other publishers that may/may not be easy to play today with other means (Collection, etc) Castlevania Bloodlines Contra Hard Corps Earthworm Jim Megaman Wily Wars (First re-release since Sega Channel) Road Rash 2 Street Fighter 2 With a total of 15 "rare" games. Compare with the total amount of games in the Snes mini (21), so you can now realize that what actually made Sega lose the episode is the fact that the mini offers way more games in general, because it is very possible that it has more "rare" games than the snes mini. Bottom line, it should have been a tie, because both minis are equally great in my opinion.

still have to argue that nintendo released a lot of their games on the virtual console and the 3ds eshop in the past, plus they also have have a collection of super nintendo games and nes games bundled free with their switch online service. the snes mini and genesis mini are both kindof equally obsolite in that respect, there are many ways to play snes games but there are multiple options to play them in the best ways. i just can't agree that nintendo hasnt made their retro games accessible before when they clearly have,in fact they should have released an snes ultimate collection sooner but never did until the switch came out

Personally, Mega Drive Mini wins for me because I owned most of the games on SNES Classic on Wii U Virtual Console. (Great service btw. Wish the Switch had that) Also that I actually liked most of the games that weren't regarded as classics in the video. (Dynamite Headdy, Monster World games, Super Fantasy Zone, etc) Still, for those interested in retro games and want to get into them, GET BOTH MINIS. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

I don't know who this Sam is, but I spent more time than I am willing to admit (ok about 30 seconds) searching for a Alma Loaverit without any results. Now, as for the console wars. I never owned either of the consoles or any consoles as a kid in the 80s or even 90s. I was always a computer gamer. When the SNES Classic arrived I bought it as I found the games to be quite good, at least from what I heard, plus there were some (few) good racing games. One of my favorite genres after strategy. When the Sega MegaDrive mini arrived not only I had I believe all the games on PC (bought in collections), but also the system itself had almost zero racing games. Which wouldn't matter all that much if it had for example Desert Strike. But nooo. So I never bought it. I would consider buying it today, but the price it is found at is ridiculous. So, for me the SNES Classic wins. Literally as that's what I bought. If SEGA decides to release another "mini" of this or other console of theirs, I pray they will have more racing games in them. MORE RACING GAMES. Thanks for the video.

Love you guys, but I disagree on Monster World 4 and Monster Boy not being classics. You also mentioned Castlevania 4, but not Bloodlines. You guys even did a 4 vs Bloodlines and Bloodlines won. Bloodlines is not in Sega Genesis Classics collection. I believe this was a tie. Both are totally worth getting.

Agreed, though I think it has something to do with the music licensing. Rumors exist that Michael Jackson actually composed some of the songs for Sonic 3.
