This is my favorite Christmas song. I like it when my knees buckle at "Peuple à genoux" (men on your knees). I can still smell the incense and feel the excitement about going home and seeing Santa Claus has come by.

This song was written just a few months before the French people overthrew their last king, Louis-Phillippe, and the revolution that was in the air is definitely in the words to this song, especially in the second stanza, which Alagna does not sing here. Placide Cappeau, the lyricist, very much supported the establishment of the Second Republic. Adolphe Adam, who set Cappeau's words to music, called the song a "religious Marseillaise," and it is that indeed.

Perso, je n'aime pas trop Alagna, que je trouve meilleur en CD que sur scène (en fait, il ne faut pas le voir, mais c'est un avis tout personnel). Mais force est de reconnaître qu'il a une voix magnifique et chante admirablement cet air.

I think Alagna is an excellent tenor but I believe he is a lyric tenor,not a dramatic.Corelli and Del Monaco were dramatic tenors.But I love Alagna's voice and this is a very good rendition. Merry Christmas.

I don't understand this assertion: 'it goes in exact opposite of the evangelical message...God has no wrath against his own people, only love'. So you see where I'm coming from, consider what the elect of God ARE being 'redeemed' from then, if not the wrath of God seen in the decay of the world? I also don't see how this is discreet about God's love, but at least that's debatable lol. Looking forward to your reply. Grace to you!
@uncd200011 жыл бұрын
Actually I prefer the English text, which of course is not a translation at all. That being said, the French is so beautiful to hear, and the words themselves are just a joy to read. Still, nothing can supplant Latin for me as I can still understand it in most texts, but I must say the Church (Italian system) pronunciation is often a bit of a detraction.
@BorisCr11 жыл бұрын
Of course, this song is my absolute favourite Christmas song, but when you stop and read the words, in French at least, they don't make much sense... It goes in exact opposite of the evangelical message... God has no wrath against his own people, only love, and this song is very discreet about God's love. And if I may, Mr. Alagna sings it wonderfully, and I really like this orchestral arrangement. A nice chorus would have been nice, though.

Maybe because you don't understand the words. As much as I love this song, trust me when I say that it is not high literature...

@moppettshow OMG yes, it is disgraceful, worse than the worst home movies, camera work from the Cretin School of Infinitesimal Attention Span, which goes with MTV pop videos but is a barbarous insult to a magnificent singer like Alagna.
